1. Cheeky Storage:
Squirrels are famous for their habit of burying nuts. They have specialized cheek pouches that can expand to carry multiple nuts at once, and they use this caching behavior to store food for later.
2. Tree Acrobat:
Squirrels are remarkable climbers and jumpers. They can leap up to 10 times their body length, and their strong hind legs and sharp claws make them agile acrobats in trees.
3. Colorful Variety:
While the common image is of the gray squirrel, there are over 200 species of squirrels, ranging in colors from red and brown to black and white.
4. Incisor Power:
Squirrels have four sharp incisor teeth that never stop growing. Gnawing on nuts, bark, and other objects helps keep their teeth from growing too long.
5. Communication Tail:
Squirrels use their tails to communicate. They flick their tails to signal danger and use various tail positions and movements to convey information to other squirrels.
6. Territorial Marking:
Squirrels mark their territory by rubbing scent glands on their face against objects, leaving behind their scent.
7. Epic Memory:
Squirrels have an impressive spatial memory, remembering the locations of thousands of nuts they bury. This skill helps them locate their hidden food even months later.
8. Nocturnal Snacking:
While squirrels are primarily diurnal, some species, like the flying squirrel, are nocturnal and are active during the night.
9. Flying Misnomer:
Flying squirrels don't actually "fly" but glide. They have a membrane called the patagium that stretches from their wrists to their ankles, allowing them to glide from tree to tree.
10. Social Chatter:
Squirrels are not solitary creatures. They engage in social chatter, using a variety of vocalizations, including high-pitched chirps, to communicate with each other.
11. Complex Nests:
Squirrels build elaborate nests called dreys. Constructed with leaves, twigs, and moss, these nests are often located high in trees for safety.
12. Vocal Mimicry:
Some squirrel species, like the fox squirrel, are known for their ability to mimic bird calls. This vocal mimicry might be used to deter potential predators.
13. Hibernation Lite:
While not true hibernators, some squirrels, particularly ground squirrels, enter a state of torpor during the winter months, where their metabolic rate decreases, allowing them to conserve energy.
14. Diverse Diet:
Squirrels are omnivores with a diverse diet. While they are known for eating nuts, they also consume fruits, seeds, fungi, insects, and even bird eggs.
15. Leap of Faith:
Squirrels often make daring leaps between branches or from trees to the ground. Their hind legs act as shock absorbers, and their long tails provide stability during these jumps.
16. Urban Adaptation: Squirrels have adapted well to urban environments and are commonly found in parks and residential areas. They often raid bird feeders and forage for food in human-made settings.
17. Temperature Regulation:
Squirrels have a high metabolic rate, and their bushy tails play a role in thermoregulation. They can wrap their tails around themselves for warmth during cold weather.
18. Nest Duplication:
Squirrels may build multiple nests within their territory. This behavior helps them have alternative shelters in case of danger or changes in the environment.
19. Parental Care:
Squirrel mothers are dedicated caregivers. They build nests for their young, provide them with warmth, and nurse them until they are ready to venture out on their own.
20. Life Expectancy:
In the wild, the average lifespan of a squirrel is around 6-12 years, depending on the species. However, they face numerous challenges, including predators, disease, and accidents, which can impact their longevity.

wow! I am speechless. Can only text :) Wonderful survival techniques, but what makes them so adorable? When them stand and put their fists on their tiny chests ❤ and look at you! I leave nuts and water for them on the balcony. They seem to enjoy the clean and fresh water alot. One of them drank water and ten looked at me. Some water beads were on his/her whiskers. So cute.

I leave nuts and seeds out for my backyard squirrels and birds. My neighbors hate it. The last time one of my "Christian " neighbors literally screamed at me for feeding them. Since he's open about his faith, I thought we could connect. I told him that I'm sorry, but I didn't create them and then rest on the 7th day. I think he hates me more now.

Wow, that sounds like quite the neighborhood drama! 😅 It's unfortunate that your act of kindness isn't appreciated by everyone, but remember, you're making a positive difference for our furry and feathered friends. Keep spreading love and compassion, and maybe your neighbor will come around. Thanks for being a friend to nature! ❤️

Indeed! While they may have a general idea of where they've hidden nuts due to their memory, they often locate them by scent, and often stumble upon those of other squirrels while foraging.
