You may be young enough that you don’t remember when the campaign started to get people to lather up with SPF (with mostly good intentions). The idea was to reduce wrinkles (vanity) but more importantly to reduce skin cancer. Skin cancer is very serious but it got to the point where some people didn’t allow any sun exposure. After this campaign started we started to see odd health symptoms broader than just lack of vitamin D. It’s yet another example of the medical community promoting bad behavior.

Beyond the sun's beneficial effects on hormonal levels, there is a study showing that sun exposure maybe a pivotal factor, early in life, in people preserving their visual acuity. An ophthalmologist posited that one of the reasons that we see so many children and young adults having to rely on corrective lenses is because the modern world is depriving them of sun exposure early in life, and this lack of early childhood sun exposure prevents the eyes from growing into the correct shape in order to have optimal vision. Many times, when speculating about the cause of this pervasive poor vision in our population, we blame either genetics or too much screen time. Its probably not the TVs, iPads and mobile phone screens that are directly causing these declines vision. Instead, these devices are INDIRECTLY causing the deterioration of vision early in life, because they are REPLACING time that would be spent outdoors.

I live in the Washington DC area. I believe that the natural vitamin D we get from the sun balances out all of our hormones. I normally weigh five pounds less in the summer time than in the winter. I agree and think this is due to higher t levels and also the balance of all of my other hormones due to getting more sun in the summer.

As a fair-skinned person who hasn't even reached age 40 yet, but has already survived 3 skin cancers, I feel you were a bit too cavalier about the very real possibility of skin cancer from sun exposure. I'm not saying we shouldn't get sun exposure. I still try to get regular sun exposure for all the benefits you mentioned. However, that doesn't mean I and other fair-skinned people should go out in the sun, potentially at mid day when the sun is at its most potent for us (since you didn't specify) for 25 minutes every single day. That is honestly too much for us. You did mention hyper responders, but you didn't mention that people like us should really be careful and potentially limit exposure to only 10 to 15 minutes before putting on lotion, particularly when getting the exposure around mid day in a hotter climate like Southern California for instance. After the cancer removal on my face (Mohs Surgery) I had a golf ball-sized deep and open wound. If I didn't have a spectacular plastic surgeon close it up with a flap technique without the need for a skin graft two weeks later then I would have had to walk around with a deformed face the rest of my life. And even with great luck with quality health care and surgeons I will still have the scar for the rest of my life. I do believe you mean well and are overall providing good information to the public, but I urge you to use a little more caution and thought for potential consequences when educating your audience on the findings of research studies. Thanks.

So I did come back a third time like I had mentioned in my second comment and I did have an interesting thought about way things were back in the day especially when they had to hand weave clothing and if you think about how breathable and lightly woven linen was, people likely got more full body sun exposure just from wearing white linen, versus today's more durable tightly woven cotton or even worse polyester. So definitely clothing can be an issue in how we get less sunlight against our bodies besides the fact that people stay inside and enjoy air conditioning or artificial heat just to avoid being uncomfortable which is a much better stress I would say then having anxiety or depression from isolation

I came back to listen to this again because after eating a large meal, I went down the trail in my Rangers panties they call them without a shirt like I tend to do on Sundays after my two meals I eat after training my legs, and it is interesting though thinking about it because I tend to feel more excited more quickly after going for a long walk in short shorts without a shirt, and some of that can be from some of the smiles and waves and greetings from some of the girls out there running or riding their bikes, because some say that even talking to beautiful women can spike your testosterone, which of course enhances your mood, but it is interesting that even the sunlight can do that because these things are pretty thin so maybe in a way I am getting full body exposure, aside from my bearfoot shoes covering my feet, yet I do find this video extremely interesting so I will probably listen to it a third time

People are neurotic about avoiding sun exposure. I know so many people who have been prescribed vitamin D from their GPs, and they're the same people who slather on factor 50 (in the UK) and religiously avoid the sun. Obviously no one is advocating baking yourself to a crisp, but we do need sunlight. I've noticed a huge difference in mood from increasing exposure and even tentatively and conservatively using sunbeds when the light level is low in the winter time. Getting light into your eyes on the morning is amazing too

I have the windows down, music up, and sun roof open in the car almost year round. Don't know if I can ditch sunglasses though. My eyes are blue and pretty sensitive. great study though XOXO

Beneficial UVB Sun exposure in Northern Hemisphere, is from late March to late September. The sun doesn't get high enough in the sky during the other months.

I guess I’m lucky enough to live in Las Vegas, lots of sun exposure during the summer months. Probably can’t do a “full body” tan unless I wanna give my neighbors a show

Hi Mike! Thanks for the great video again. Question: What is the optimal vitamin D3 blood level (in nmol/l)?

With a very rare exception of when I’ve been in the sun all day I’ve not worn sun cream in several years. If I get skin cancer so be it, the benefits of being in the sun and avoiding all those chemicals far outweigh any future drawbacks.

That's a tough one, I live in the tropics so skins cancer is extremely bad here due to constant level extreme UV levels. So maybe 5mins per day will do enough.

I always found it interesting that people who live further from the Equator have higher cancer rates such bladder cancer, breast cancer, colon-rectum cancer, lung cancer, oesophagus cancer, oral cancer, ovary cancer, pancreas cancer, skin cancer and stomach cancer

at my region mid day sun is very hot in the summers, I believe it depends on where you live because 20 minutes in that sun will burn you for sure

@@Highintensityhealth awesome. loved your discussion with delauer. kinda sad we don't have a channel on tv dedicated to educating people about their bodies/health. no money in keeping people healthy. we don't have health care we have sick care.

I am concerned about how sun exposure leads to skin cancer. Could you explain in greater depth the risk benefit analysis you are making when encouraging prolonged sun exposure?
