Your ideas are great! However, my shop is not large so wall space is a premium. I have found that stacking items out from the wall saved a lot of space. For instance, spreading out clamps laterally takes up a lot of wall space. Hanging the clamps to the side and stacking them about 4 deep out from the wall is a great space saver.

I really liked the “t” nut creation & the drink and snack shelf with French cleats. Next to that I would need to create a shelf to trap the critters that nibble on my snacks. My shop is Not mouse proof. Virtually everything in my shop hangs from these cleats. On all four walls, cleats hold my cabinets, overhead shelving, hand & power tools. Under the three windows, I’m planning to install countertops self contained attached with 4” cleats. I want everything to be movable. I’m not really sure if this last idea will really work out?? I really like the idea of being totally organized. I’m a bad tool/accessory junkie with boxes of stuff. I prefer things are in sight if possible. Thank you for great project ideas.

Another great collection of organizational ideas. Glad to see the cups I gave you at WBC are getting some use. I hadn’t thought to use French cleats for my Garage tools. Now I’m considering doing a lot of that. What about the lawn folding chairs that fit in bags? Those things are a storage nightmare.
@SpecificLove7
@SpecificLove7 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chad. We love those cups and use them all of the time. I'm sure you could come up with a ton of ideas for your FC tool wall, especially since you make a lot with metal. Now those chairs could be a challenge, I will have to think on that one. ☺️

I have had french cleats in my garage for many years. The video I would like to make (and see) is what considerations go into the initial layout of the wall strips. Compared with your layouts, It seems we're both using plywood in 3" strips [actually 2-7/8ths] which give 128 linear feet out of a 4'x8' sheet with 2 screws at each stud. Why 3", why 2 screws, why plywood? Any tips on ripping all those strips? How did you treat the strips? I used just boiled linseed oil. How did you come up with the spacing between strips or how high the top strip should be? - we clearly differed on that approach, for instance I offset so as to not run into my outlets and light switches and put the top strip as high as possible without conflicting with the ceiling when getting holders on/off. Also, I was shocked at how much material went into my garage, some estimation techniques on how many screws and how much wood for the initial layout would be helpful for noobs. Also, I started with 'strip spacers' and a 4' level, but quickly moved to a laser level on a tripod when laying out and installing the strips which allowed me to see the lines on three walls at a time - what tips/tricks do you have in that area? Finally, I spaced the strips the same on every wall, if I was doing it over I might have used more space between strips on my two walls that are not near my main work area. As I said, I would like to make such a video but as I am not a videographer I would like to see yours. We could collaborate if you want. Cheers!

I love these videos. I am totally making system like this. However, a question for the expert. Could a small wodden cam help to lock the cleats to the rails? For long cleats it Could be on the back and close the space to the lower edge and lock the cleat in. Or you Could have wooden peg just below the lower edge on the rail that you push through a hole? Perhaps a solution to a non-problem.
@SpecificLove7

Thanks for the questions. I actually used those and a few more ideas in how to lock French cleats in place on a previous video.

I think I'm sold on the french cleat idea! When I come across some other videos, I see some people mount the french cleat holder portion right at the very top of their holder, while others place it lower down (and it looks like the top of the holder probably "rests" on the next row of cleat above? Is there a reason for NOT positioning the cleat holder at the very top of the back of it? Thanks for all your enthusiasm and information around the french cleats! :)
@SpecificLove7
@SpecificLove7 3 жыл бұрын
I hope you enjoy working in your space with French Cleats. I prefer to mount the cleat at the top of the holder because it usually is the best leverage point for the heavier tools to rest on a lower cleat. But you can experiment with the possibilities yourself.
@KaitlynMcLachlanPhotography
@KaitlynMcLachlanPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
 @Specific Love Creations Thanks so much! One last question - do you have any general guidance for selecting height of the cleats, height of the cleat holder section, and spacing of cleats? For spacing, "too close" is never a problem as long as you can insert+remove a holder right? But when it comes to the cleat+cleat holder heights themselves... how do you determine that?
@SpecificLove7
@SpecificLove7 3 жыл бұрын
It really just depends on the size of the tools, but if you can, try to shape them for the least amount of wall space.

140 french cleat options so far. Give it a few more episodes and you wont have space :D I am planning on making a "Showcase" for a Tablet with plexiglass lid for dust protection, charging and aux cable to the outside. That way I can listen to music and have a look at pdf build plans if I need to. Could put a cleat on that as well. Feel free to use that idea if you like, could be interesting to see the features someone else would put on it

What is the average depth of your cleats? I'm thinking I want a pull out shelf system. Kind of similar to those pull out pantry shelves.

It is a good rule of thumb to have the depth not longer than the length of the backing or it can be too front heavy and fall off.

SL, for the extension cords, why don't you just screw a surge protector strip on to a cleat? That way, all you have to do is turn off the strip, not unplug everything. The drink holder is brilliant! Another use for the stud finder holder is drill a hole in the bottom and put a metal detector wand in it. I have o e of those inexpensive HF ones that would fit in there perfectly. Great ideas!
@SpecificLove7

I don't trust the surge protectors after see what lighting strikes have done to houses in our area, it might shock you. (☺️ Pun intended) That is a cool idea on the wand, I will have to look into it, thanks.

If you ask me, the best part of the system is that you can use scraps. Since I don't really care too much about the aesthetics of the finished holder, that is about all I use both for the cleat and the holder itself.
