Big thanks to Vimi for this, and especially for editing out all the umms and uhs and stutters, especially at the start of this when I was coming up to speed with being interviewed, something I don't do a ton of. He really did a lot of work to make me look like a person who knows how to say words in a coherent order, and I really appreciate it.

I also add that there are now multiple people (Gouvernathor and Mal among them) who contribute to Ren'Py on a regular basis, and I want to make sure they get the credit they deserve (along with everyone else that contributes, documents, translates, finds issues, creates with, or plays Ren'Py games).

@@renpytom You have had a huge impact on internet culture and you should feel very proud of that. I'm pretty sure that a lot of devs have started with renpy, tons of visual novels are made with renpy thanks to it's accessibility. After using renpy for a project i'm now using godot and i've very quickly learned how insanely it is difficult (at least for a novice like me) to do a visual novel engine. The fact that you made renpy so easy to use and make visual novel is a tremendous help and call to creation for a lot of people not confident enough to deal with complicated code and artists in general. So TLDR : Thank you Tom! A huge bow of respect to you and the contributors to the renpy engine.

I think if Ren'py had support to port to consoles like Switch, a lot of people wouldn't even use Unity for visual novel content anymore. The porting debate is the main reason why I also moved to Unity, the mini-games that I'm interested in were also doable in Ren'py and much simpler to achieve (in my opinion). This was a great watch, as always.

@@AsheLucia That is why I said "the mini-games *I* am interested in" which are simple (common stats raising), the main point is: Ren'py is mainly created to make visual novels and most visual novels are not hybrids, so I'm sure a lot of people would rather stay there than to struggle with Unity's learning curve.

Tom, you're a hero, Ren'Py is incredibly accessible even to people who aren't programmers, but still want to make a little something of their own, and some of them will make one thing and have fun and move on, and others will make genuine works of art, and it's all thanks to you. Insane how one man can open up an accessible entry to gamedev to so many people, and it's open source too!!

I feel like Renpy really embraces all the best things a software can be in my opinion. It's open source, has first class Linux support, and it works for all skill levels. At first when I heard about renpy I assumed it was a more "basic" engine. "What you use if you don't want to or know how to make your own engine". But the thing is that's actually both true and not true. Renpy is both accessible to someone who has never programmed before and just wants to have a way to adapt a story to an interactive medium, but it also has all the features to do really low-level and advanced things in your games without feeling like those features are hidden away from you. You can make a complex game with all kinds of logic and custom UI and custom code, or you can basically just write a bunch of dialogue with some simple stage directions like background changes and sprites appearing and disappearing. I feel like a lot of programs or engines don't have a good balance between giving the user full control and also just allowing them to quickly and easy throw something together, so you would have like "oh I use this program for basic stuff and this one for more complicated stuff", but Renpy just works well for everything. Someone's first programming project or a professional studio's next release.

Tom is such a gem, I appreciate his work so much. Ren'Py genuinely opened up a whole new world of creativity for me. And the built-in accessibility features really are great! I remember playing a VN at a friend's house on a TV screen, and one of them had trouble reading the small text. There was no option for text size in the Preferences menu, but I could suggest hitting A, and there it was, because it was a RenPy game.

Hello friend, I'm creating a visual novel and your videos always save my day, I appreciate it! And since you are a renpy master, I have a question: Is there a way for my visual novel to have collectibles? Scattered throughout different settings of my novel and with one click you can take them
@vimi
@vimi 5 ай бұрын
Yeah! "Collecting" things is as simple as turning on a variable, and displaying the collectables is as simple as showing something if the variable is turned on. It can get a LOT more complex than that (I'm currently using a class system to autogenerate items with 20+ trackable attributes), but on a base level, you're just telling the game "the player has this item" and then reflecting that elsewhere in the game where the player can see it.

@vimi
@vimi 28 күн бұрын
Pay attention to how they're nested. Everything under one label is included in that label; if you put another label under that, then it's going to continue from one label to another. If you want to jump to a label, it will move you to that label. If you want to use "call", you need to create labels that generally don't have other labels leading to them, and you want to include "return" at the end, to tell ren'py "when we're finished with this label, go back".
