I'm your host, Darren Van Dam!
Tired of looking for good movies to watch on Netflix, Amazon Prime or other streaming services? Every week I recommend a handful of the best movies on Netflix, Amazon, HBO etc. so my subscribers never run out of good movies to watch on streaming. Spending 10 minutes watching one of my videos could save you hours of searching, hours that you could otherwise spend watching good movies on streaming that you otherwise might not have ever watched or even known about.
Thanks for watching!

My parents asked me what I would like for my birthday in 1960. I asked for us to go to our local drive-in theater which was running a science fiction triple feature. "War of the Worlds", "This Island Earth", and "Forbidden Planet". Even though my dad and I were the only ones who stayed awake through all three movies (mom and my three brothers were sound asleep) it is still to this day one of my best family memories. Drive-in theater pizza, popcorn, and cupcakes we brought. Making use of the drive-in theater playground. Heaven.

Sorry to hear that. Here's a couple recommendations for you. Check out "The Boys in the Boat" included w/ Prime. It released in theaters early 2024. Great sports movie about an Olympic rowing team. Also, for an intense one... check out "Chopper" also included w/ Prime right now. It's one of Eric Bana's first movies and it's easily one of his best roles of all time, Amazing! It's pretty brutal at times but it's directed by Andrew Dominik who also did "The Assassination of Jesse James" and "Killing Them Softly" so it's a little odd but I love it. For new releases I loved "The Fall Guy" which you can rent at home. I also enjoyed "Monkey Man" which is a Indian John Wick style action movie. It's also for rent or included with Peacock. Hopefully one of those helps you feel a bit better.

If you've not seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind, PLEASE DO SO NOW. He's right that it's far superior to most modern sci-fi films, at least in terms of writing, acting and directing. The effects also hold up brilliantly. I remember the thrill of watching it in the theater in the fall of '77. For those of us who were there, the one-two punch of Star Wars that summer and CE3K in the fall was the ultimate childhood experience! (For me, anyway...) For those about to watch it for the first time (hopefully in a darkened room, on a big-screen TV, with theater-quality sound), I envy you...

What's cool for folks my age is we've only ever seen movies like this on small screens. The first time I saw a lot of these movies was on cable tv with edits and commercials. As home theater technology and streaming services have improved, it's been fun to revisit these movies in a manner a little closer to the theatrical experience at home.

Interstellar is hands down the #1 greatest science fiction movie ever made in my opinion... Personally, it is my favorite movie of all time. I feel like it was specifically made to scratch my itch. Every aspect of it is flawless. From the concept, plot, script, story and cast to the sound, music, lighting special FX and overall cinematography to the directing and production etc... it gets a 10 in all categories from me. It is one of those rare sci-fi creations where the drama / acting arguably outshines the special FX. I remember forcing my mother, who has trouble staying awake through anything, to watch it with me. She will normally refuse to watch anything remotely weird, especially sci-fi... not to mention anything complicated or long. (If it wasn't for McConaughey and Hathaway casted, she definitely would have shut it down.) Needless to say she stayed awake the entire time and at the end she admitted that she was thoroughly entertained.

More than a few faves here - and speaking of "dated" sci-fi tech movies, have you seen brainstorm? It's old tech is kinda like a "inception" type neural link - Christopher Walken is soo good, actually pretty lowkey Walken - and Natalie Woods last film i believe - and the low tech actually works pretty good for 1983 efx

Freejack is my favorite movie on this list. It's only flaw was having Mick Jagger, who is NOT an actor and proves it, not that Emilio Estevez did much better honestly. It's one of the few movies I'd love to see remade, just because I like the story, but I think the movie could have been done better. That being said, I've rewatched it several times just because I enjoy it. Looking at Prime, I'd recommend some different movies: The Beastmaster (although I've always heard it called a sword and sandal movie, it's listed as science fiction for some reason), Virtuosity (Russell Crowe really gets into the part of the bad guy), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (the best version of all), Stay Tuned (one of the most underrated and forgotten movies ever, I love this movie), and MST3K: Cave Dwellers (I really enjoy MST3K, and this is one of my top 3 of all time).

Spielberg is unequaled at transforming a fictional script into convincing and compelling reality. I frequently rewatch the airport control tower scene in Close Encounters and marvel at his orchestration. Mundane activities inside the tower suddenly giving way to escalating tension. The pilots struggling to describe what they're seeing. Tower technicians talking over each other to diagnose the situation. Their intermingled comments are unintelligible adding to the chaotic situation. The pilots opting not to declare a UFO sighting. "I wouldn't know what type of report to file." Absolutely masterful.

Maximum Overdrive for the soundtrack got to love a bit of DC, yes it's a bit cheesy but that was the "Story", Close Encounters just yes for everything you said and more!!! However one of the more interesting ones I don't think I've seen but based on comments below is going to be Ink, thanks for putting this out....

Shoutout for Wormwood! Amazing flick considering the budget especially. I do want a legit sequel. So twisted yet somehow still fun and the climax just has you longing for more! Hard to find but worth it.

Just watched 'Radius'. I dont know if it was the Jane and Liam chemistry but it was very good. Would love to see this remade with a larger budget and some script/plot refinement - but same main character actors.

Great video. I had 5 movies that I wanted to watch but damn, only one (Turbo Kid) is available on Prime in Canada. So I guess that is my movie watch tonight.

Maximum overdrive is my favorite movie of all time. Glad to see it on your list. I hate when people talk trash about it.

I love that movie as well. I do think it's a trash movie, but it's fun trash, and I don't see a problem with that. I'd rather watch 10 movies like Maximum Overdrive than any 1 of the usual Oscar bait films.

Same here. On my first viewing, I actually feel asleep lol. But then decided to give it a second chance, since I have rewatched Besson's Fifth Element and Leon countless times. Now I love the film! My main gripe has to do with the casting leads. I think he could have picked better actors over DeHaan and Delavinge. They weren't right for their respective parts.

You're right about Close Encounter of the Third Kind. It still hold up with todays special effects. Outstanding choice for number 1.

Too bad that I'm currently living in Singapore, and very rarely the suggestions you make are available on the counterparts streaming platforms here. Of course, not your fault. Having said that, I still love your watching your videos and reviews to discover movies and put them on my to-watch list. A couple of comments on this list: * Freejack I first watched as a teenager when it came out (90s kid here) and I loved it. I think I watched it at least 2 other times, but it has been at least 15 years. The scene at the end with the numbers (trying not to spoil) is epic! * I also think Valerian was an awesome movie, somehow not well received by critics. The world-building is great. Some scenes are pretty epic too!

Good list, thanks. I've seen several and will now fill in the blanks. :) As far as old films go (maybe for another list as this would be endless) I have to add the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. 👽Cheers and happy viewing.

The effects in Close encounter look much better than the aweful CGI from Hollywood recently. How is that possible??? Omg the acting in this movie!!! The kid at the dinner table... needs an Oscar
