Open Range has a very special place in my heart as it was one of the few movies my grandfather and I got to see in theaters together. Over the next 10 years up until his death in 2013, I think he watched Open Range more than any other Western.

I love this movie! It has romance, the big shoot em out and I'm sorry to hear that Kevin and Robert were in such pain. No one could tell. A fabulous job of acting and directing. Also ready for more Horizon!

For us, we normally do NOT read or pay attention to reviews, especially the Hollywood Reporter. First of all-we are fans of the western genre(we donate every year to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum), second, we give the people the benefit of the doubt. Especially Kevin Costner, who has a background for this sort of thing.

I live about two hours from where this was filmed in southern Alberta. Truly one of the finest homages to the settlement of the west ever filmed. Costner really brought the old West to life.

At the time of writing, I have only viewed Part 1 of Horizon. Nevertheless, I would still go with Horizon. This has been a passion project of Costner's for well over 30 years, and it absolutely shows. A truly great movie and I look forward greatly to the remaining parts.

I’d have to go with Open Range, but it’s not truly a fair comparison as I’ve only seen Part 1 of Horizon. Even though I liked it, it’s designed to leave you hanging and make you want to see Part 2, it’s not meant to be taken as a standalone film. Even though it’s 3 hours long, so many characters and situations are introduced that you don’t get to know them in any depth and of course the majority of the storylines are left unanswered. I can’t help but feel it would have been more financially successful as a Miniseries like Lonesome Dove.

I’m willing to bet that’s where it’s going to get its popularity. Much like how the hateful eight was better received once it was broken up into episodes on streaming services, I think that’s where this movie will get its flowers.

It was really refreshing to see a movie that was able to do away with the 1950's Hollywood creation of the "fast draw" scene. The shootout scene in Open Range was much more realistic with the combatants using their sights instead of shooting from the hip.

Hollywood Reporter... only western they'd like is Brokeback Mountain. Costner has done some great westerns Open Range, Wyatt Earp, Danced with Wolves and he's in one of my all time favorites... Silverado. And I don't know why they hate on Postman. I really liked that movie. Just because it's not a big box-office hit doesn't mean it's bad.

Open Range was an excellent production! Directed well, and Costner played Charlie to a tee. Duvall was the perfect Boss. Just a fantastic movie. I'd put it above KB, Matrix, and slightly above the Tolkien movies. Integral work, and non-hollywood oriented which is ALWAYS a plus, OR will likely be topped by Horizon. I have never experienced a shorter 3 hours in my life. Set your Costner-hate aside, and go see this new movie.

Open Range is a top notch western. Costner and Duvall had great chemistry. Boss confronting the crooked sheriff in front of all the patrons in the restaurant was a fantastic scene. Only thing i dont like is revolvers firing more than 6 shots.

Really enjoyed this insight into one of my all time Top 10 westerns. Thank you. But wasn’t it The Fisher King that got Michael Jeter noticed as a character actor in Hollywood? Along with the Green Mile? I don’t think anyone cared about people’s acting chops in Jurassic Park 3, did they? I mean, it wasn’t a, “bad,” movie, but it wasn’t all that good either. And it would be hard to argue that movie earned anyone a casting spot anywhere else, when Jeter was by then a familiar face to movie goers? The Fisher King was his first break from TV into movies and a memorable performance that won him some minor award nominations nevertheless. I know, I splitting hairs a bit, but that’s what movie buffs are for, right? But, thanks regardless. You have great taste in movies.

I don’t think Kevin Costner is a top tier actor but for some reason all of his movies are top tier movies. I even like Wyatt Earp much more than I like Tombstone. Probably one of my top 3 favorite actors just because of the quality of the movies he is in. Although he isn’t a terrible actor either. I just don’t think he’s top tier.

Dragged ? ? Had one of the longest gun battle scenes of any western made. Plenty of dialogue, suspense, cinematography, and a great chemistry between Costner and Duvall. Classic IMO.
