It’s the best city when you’re young. It’s catered for students. It has a cool European, American/Canadian vibe. Imagine if Paris and New-York had a baby, it would be Montreal.

You say it's the best city when you're young , any reason you specify "when you're young"?
@brodocassel
@brodocassel 3 жыл бұрын
JozeManu there’s a ton of students, so lots of other young people. The party scene is amazing. Vibrant arts, music and cultural scene. Cost of living is low for a major city (going up though). Great public transport. Just an all around cool vibe you don’t get anywhere else in Canada or US. After that once you move forward in life and the partying gets old and you want to settle down, maybe start a family, I think there are many better places to live. But if you’re gonna be young and single then Mtl is the best spot.

Thank you, Yasmeen, such an exquisite video on the true character of Montreal! Montreal and CDMX (Mexico CIty) are each, hands-down, the two single greatest world-class international cities in all of North America. Each has rich culture, international foods, deep unique histories, tremendous urban beauty, enormous parks and green spaces, and the contrast of very old architecture and modern gleaming towers. Montreal and CDMX share many uncanny similarities. When traveling in from each airport, their suburbs share similar 1950's-1960's architecture which is crumbling and not aging so gracefully. They have the same Metro running on tires and not on rails, both so quiet on the ears. They each have Mount Royal and Chapultepec parks for beautiful green spaces. They both have the beautiful tree-lined European boulevards with skyscrapers and high-end shops. I absolutely love everything about Montreal, and you provide an accurate representation of the city. Montreal locals will always lead in French, so that's helpful if you have it, though they will always revert to English if they are capable. The farther East you go in the city, the more predominance of pure Quebecois French as the primary language.

I am Montrealer, and I know Mexico city. I am proud of my city, but Montreal has nothing close to Paseo de la Reforma, or the Zocalo. I think Mexico is at another level. However, thanks to you to link the two cities in some way, I love both. (my daughter in law is from DF).

It's Mandarin and Cantonese than come in third and fourth position in Canada... Then Punjabi and Tagalog in fifth and sixth position. In Quebec though, it's French, then English, then Arabic, then Spanish, then Italian, then Haitian Creole, then Greek, then Chinese languages, then Portuguese, then Romanian, then Vietnamese and then Russian. After than come Persian, Polish, Cree, Armenian, German, Tagalog, Tamil AND THEN Punjabi. After Punjabi comes Inuktitut, then Bengali, then Urdu, then Yiddish, Turkish, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Korean, Hebrew, Dutch, Serbian, Hindi, Albanian, Croatian, Japanese and Swahili. For Montreal specifically, it's similar to Quebec : French, English, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Greek, Romanian, Russian, Cantonese, Farsi, Tagalog, Tamil, Bengali, Kabyle THEN Punjabi. Great vidéo! However, winter 8-9 months is a bit exagerated. There is Spring and Autumn, but I understand that coming from the desert, these ''look'' like winter! And summers are often very hot and humid, stick around for it! Lol. Anyways, very funny your anecdote about standing on the right side of the escalator! It's one of those unwritten laws here.... :-)

Oh girl, as we townies always say, there are two seasons in Montreal: Winter and construction. Personally, I love the winter, our summers are horribly hot and so humid. Winters are fine though, you just need to dress up and walk fast, and you should generate enough body heat to keep you warm (provided you have a good jacket).

Winter is NOT eight to nine months of the year (unless you were raised in the heat of a desert). If you define winter as the time in which snowfall is 'possible', winter is about six months long (November through April). Then we have two months of spring (May, June), two months of summer (July, August), and two months of autumn (September, October). For at least half the winter it is perfectly comfortable if you dress reasonably, like a winter jacket, toque, scarf and gloves. In the three months where it might be colder in winter, you add a sweater to that jacket and wear a pair of winter boots, and again, you will be perfectly comfortable. Also, Montreal is famous for having a huge underground city network. If you pick your living accommodations appropriately, it is perfectly possible to leave your apartment on the coldest day of winter wearing nothing more than maybe a sweater, no jacket, no gloves, nothing else, and do everything you would want to do, including go to your university (depends on the university and program). Shopping, including groceries, going to the cinema, going to restaurants, bars, etc. is all available without once stepping outside into the winter.
@richcorrea-lampasona7288
@richcorrea-lampasona7288 2 жыл бұрын
That second part about underground really interested me, do you mean subway and underground public transit?
@panpiper
@panpiper 2 жыл бұрын
@@richcorrea-lampasona7288 Yes, but it is more than that. There are huge shopping centers, malls, etc., all linked through that subway, and once you are in the downtown underground, you could walk all day, never taking the metro (subway), yet never going outside, being treated to a never ending series of shops, restaurants, etc..

Girl, I know it is not fun, but winter being up to 8 to 9 months of the year is a bit blown out of proportion LMAO! 😅😅😅 Even if it does feel that way : ] It's technically only 4 months and the temperatures gradually goes up and down from Fall 🍁, Winter ❄️ and Spring 🌷. That being said, forget about being cute in winter, it's not doable. You will need the right gear to stay warm. For the ones that are planning to visit MTL: If you're planning to stay in the downtown area, she's right, it's definitely more convenient to move around by foot and public transport, everything will be within walking distance anyway (check on google map if in doubt). Anyways, I hope that everyone is doing well and it's really interesting to see your view about the city, since I grew up here and I'm jaded about.

Hey girl thanks for the video, it's so helpful! I'm currently debating moving to Montreal for uni next summer. Since most of the classes will be online, I'm hesitant to move there if i'm gonna be stuck in my dorm 24/7. Do you think the student life in Montreal is still worth it, even with the pandemic?

Was hanging around parc Maisonneuve a lot this year, because the inflation of rent has increased and space for immigrants has diminished in the city center of the island, there’s a big influx of English speakers throughout Rosemont petit patrie, hochelaga, mercier-Maisonneuve. As well as many many Italians and other ethnic backgrounds who speak English first represented in Pointe aux trembles and rivière des prairies.

Here is a little fact-check : Montreal is not a bilingual city : Section 1 of the Charter of the city reads : Montréal est une ville de langue française (Montréal is a French-speaking city). That's why the lady in the metro speaks French only, and signs are in French. Of course, most Montrealers are bilingual thus this idea that the city is bilingual.

@@sammexp I understand your point of view and as you pointed out " foreigners from summer year long countries" need to understand that there are countries with 4 seasons: sprint - summer - autumn - winter, not winter - summer - winter - winter. This is the part that I found out of place from her video. Montreal has all seasons and each of them is different and beautiful in their own way. Spreading stereotypes about Montreal and Canada is not nice. :)
