Troubleshooting problems has only gotten easier since vehicles are now equipped with OBD2 (on board diagnostic) features. With that being said, with cars being so advanced, finding smaller problems has become more difficult to diagnose. Bringing your vehicle to a shop is not only costly, but sometimes it is something you need not to worry about. Your Check Engine Light (CEL) will come on for many different reasons. It can be anything from you having to tighten your gas cap, or you having to replace your engine. Those are both problems, however you don’t need to go to your mechanic for both of them. You can easily save yourself hundreds of dollars by scanning your car with an inexpensive scanner. Something as cheap as $20 could save you thousands in the long run.
The VGate $20* scanner (amzn.to/34IY9WD) is a wireless WIFI dongle that relies on you owning a phone or a tablet. The dongle connects to your device wirelessly, and allows you to use an app that you have downloaded from the App Store to help diagnose problems with your car. The reason why there is an asterisk next to the $20 is because some applications are free and others are not, meaning the total price for you to be able to scan your car can be more than $20.
The $50 Autel AL519 scanner (amzn.to/2r8OPMZ) is a corded unit that is very good at scanning the basic problems like engine & transmission codes. Given its price, you get a rather in-depth look into your vehicle’s operations. Both the hardware to connect it to your vehicle, and the software are included, which means this is an all-in-one unit. For $50, you can scan your vehicle. This device cannot scan things like your ABS system, SRS, Sonar, TPMS, and other features. It can tell you engine and transmission codes, it can give you the live data from your ECU, and has a Readiness test which will help you determine if your vehicle will pass an emissions test.
Moving up to the $500 Autel MK808BT scanner (amzn.to/37V0NKZ), this thing is a beat. You get a large touch screen display that allows you to do all of the features of the cheaper $50 scanner, and SO MUCH MORE! Since it is based on Android, it is essentially a tablet that has automotive capabilities. You can access the internet, log into KZfaq, and scan your car at the same time. This scanner is targeted towards the advanced DIY car enthusiast as it does have a higher price tag, however it gives you so much more information from your vehicle. Whether you have an old manual car with no amenities, or a high end mercedes loaded with all of the bells and whistles, this Autel scanner can tackle the job. It connects to your car via bluetooth, has built in Wifi, is extremely universal, comes with a carrying case, and you can even diagnose your car from outside of the vehicle since it is wireless. It can fix address countless problems like ABS, SRS, DPF,
TPMS, Oil Reset, Key Fob Programming, SAS, injector relearn, and so much more. NOTE FROM AUTEL: please note that MK808BT only support TPMS sensor ID relearn(can't support TPMS programming and TPMS activate) and key fob programming function is mainly designed for Asian vehicles that have low-grade anti-theft systems and NOT intended for AUDI, Benz, BMW, VW which have advanced IMMO systems, please contact seller to check compatibility before purchasing.

Awesome scanner but I would recommend getting the 908 series which has bi-directional control so you can manually operate most devices on your car manually and properly diagnose all your issues with whatever is going on in your car. This scanner also has a feature that will tell you if someone has recently reset the DTC‘s if you’re buying a used car, this is invaluable and can save you thousands of dollars.

908 cost $800.00 a year for updates..So unless you work on 30 vehicles a week..I doubt it's worth the extra money...You can get an MP808BT that does most the stuff you will use...And it cost $125.00 a year for updates...

For the Autel 808, you still have to pay annual fees to upgrade your scanner after the free 1st year of use. It is not cheap. Tough for an amateur user. Find products with no fees if you are an amateur.

I wouldn't recommend leaving the wifi dongle in your odbII port. Most of them I've seen take power from a constant hot line to run itself and the wifi, instead of a switched circuit. This means it is a constant draw on your battery.

@MexiKing74

How you like it?
@plonkster
@plonkster 3 жыл бұрын
@@MexiKing74 So far it has never failed me, though I've used it on a grand total of 6 vehicles. The main reason I bought it is because my wife owned a Suzuki Swift that would raise low voltage codes whenever the battery went dead, and those codes would not clear by themselves. That car had three modules (airbag, brakes, engine), of which the Autel could read only two modules. It could not read the engine module, but that is not because the Autel is bad, it is because Suzuki used their own data layer in earleir vehicles (called SDL, Suzuki data layer). Thankfully the modules that raised the codes were the two it could access. The other cars I accessed: 2007 Toyota Corolla, 2016 Toyota RAV4, 2015 Kia Soul, 2017 (ish) VW Golf GTi (evap problem), and a Mercedes Benz ML Diesel (threw a code and car went into limp mode in a very remote area, causing the owner much heartache...). All of them perfect. But as I said... I don't get to use it much. My own vehicles don't ask for much.... cause they're Japanese :-)

Excellent information yet for me that extreme intrigue you have with all this electronic jargon will probably fade as you get older. The 2017 Ford I drive has a big touch screen computer in the middle of the dash which I have found to be totally useless. Now an engine management light comes on now and again and I have to run round after mechanics to keep getting it switched back off. I would swap everything behind that silly touch screen for the built in diagnostics you can download to your Android for 3bucks! Couple that with tin plated wheel nuts that round off and it makes me wonder what happened to Henry Ford? Your explanation of software options was excellent, many thanks.

I have a 2009 Honda Civic. Does the scanner tool tell the actual tire pressure? Also, does it have the ability to capture all the data and trend over a long period of time?

There is no one scanner that does everything. Innova 5610 with limited bidirectional function is good value at $250-$330. Thinkcar Thinkdiag has a smorgasbord of customized dongles scanners. Fox well NT530 has ABS BLEED Feature. Highly customized packages with reasonable fees. How much do you want to spend? Scanners over $700-800 will have full features for professional mechanics. Complete pro scanners will cost thousands Usually $1800-$15,000 Best wishes.

@E-N-A-R-D-L-A-V 4 жыл бұрын
Autel's MK line are glorified code readers, if you want an actual Autel scan tool, go with their MS series. HF's Zurich Pro is actually a good scan tool to own that wont dent your wallet too much and has the same functions as Snap-On's or Mac's line of scan tools.

The 3rd scan tool($500) has a yearly fee, alot of those really expensive ones will have a yearly fee and if u dont pay the fee they will void the "lifetime warranty" so if anything happens like a blue screen or it bricks, that will be $$$ out of pocket

@@TheTruthWholeTruthNothingButTh the al519 is a cel( check engine light) reader and can read live data on the engine, with mode 6 and smog check to see if you will pass (if you had to reset a cel) If your the average mil Joe who doesn't work on your car and want to make sure what the mechanic says is true to what your scanner says, then yes the auto link is good, if your going to be a diy-r I'd advise the autel md 806 for the 4 main system scan ( the pro is a full system scanner)the auto link isn't a full system scanner Blue driver has website ( youtube) if your a begging diy-r who is wanting to do minor to medium repairs but don't know what their doing or where the problem is

A comment on your suggestion: Never leave the OBDII in the port when you don't use it as it would draw constant power from the battery when the car is off.

I leave AutoBrain plugged into my OBD II port all the time. It does some diagnostics and can reset the check engine light. Its been plugged in for almost 3 years now.

That is not always true. Most modern OBD2 readers (bluedriver example) can be plugged in all the time without battery drain.

This is from a personal experience. Left OBDII reader on a Camry with brand new battery for two weeks while I was travelling and the battery was dead on my return. Normally the battery does not drain that fast. My guess was the WiFi kept sending signals.

@@gzhang207 Point taken. I have to remember not to leave the OBD II sitting in my undriven car for two weeks unless my booster is in the trunk.
@gzhang207

My second guess is that the drain rate may depend on the OBDII reader: wifi based consumes more power while bluetooth based consumes less.
