Nice to see a survivor. I have 300,000km on my LGT wagon with lots of new parts including the upper track arms. They are pretty cheap from the dealer. I have a high idle problem I’m dealing with. Vacuum at 20lbs so I have a throttle body on order.

I'm still running my 2004 GT (first owner), 250,000 km now. Recently replaced the front lower control arms and R/H CV shaft. Also replaced the OE KYBs with Bilsteins B4. Drives like new.

I enjoyed this video. I’d have you do all the repairs you identified if that was my car. Maybe break up the repair project over a few months, who knows you may find something else. That’s a cool looking car. The expectation of Subaru reliability is higher than many other car brands but that repair list isn’t scary to me. Although cleaning up the last sketchy service flubs might not be straightforward. Good inspection job.

Yep. Struts. My 04 Baja looked to have the original struts when I bought it at 167K miles. They seemed ok, no leaks, but replacing them made a huge difference. I then did all of the bushings, ball joints, sway bar links, tie rods,, all that, and it drives like a new car. Well worth the not very high cost. Probably a lot easier on tires as well. Thanks again!

Did you use all oem parts? Any other recommendations for these parts.. im doing the same thing right now ive purchased all oem parts so far but not everything is easy to find or the number referencing for parts numbers become difficult.

@@liketolearn141 Engine parts I go OEM only, if keeping the engine stock. Aisin timing belt kits. Suspension and brake parts I save and go with Doorman or Moog (suspension) and have had great luck with Detroit Axle brake parts. They also sell a decent steering kit (tie rods, ends, ball joints, sway bar links) for the older legacy platform. Less than $80 on Amazon. Hard to beat if you're on a budget. I'll add that Detroit Axle also sells complete control arm assemblies, all bushings and ball joints installed that look like clones of OEM. Much cheaper and if you don't have a shop press or your control arms are rusty and gross, a handy option. Saves lots of time. I always prefer OEM Subaru stuff, but $$$$.

I've had my LGT for 12 years, it's got 178,000 on it. I still drive it a few times a month. Incredible car and shout out to my mechanic for being a car wizard. .

Nice, that's almost my car, except mine is 06 manual, I've fixed all that stuff pretty much and drive it on the racetrack, VIR and stuff. Too bad it burns a lot of oil now at 202000 miles, almost time for a new shortblock. I look forward to more content on this car! 😁

My all original, un-molested, non-reflashed legacy GT is also coming up on 200k. Turbo subaru's get a bad rap. In my opinion, it's unjustified because mine runs great. It's a well maintained car. I'm the second owner, and the original owner kept up on maintenance and so have I.

People have super high expectations of Japanese cars in general I think, Honda and Toyota have done a lot for the reputation with some cars that will go forever. Sure, Subaru aren't *quite* as reliable as they are, but they're still a darn sight better than a lot of Euro marques. "If you can't afford two mercedes, you can't afford one mercedes"

I’m also the 2nd owner of my 05 LGT and it’s currently at 239k miles. Original Motor, 5 Speed Manual Tranny and Turbo. Bought it at 218k from an older lady that kept a very thick folder of service records. Still had the window sticker in it. It’s my daily and it’s still runs like clockwork.

I have an 05 GT with 25000. every one I know wants it. Even non car people. I ran a 280zx for 200,000 and a early Celica. The GT is as enjoyable to drive, of course the 3 are completely different.

Hey mr Subaru I love your content. But I would love to see more on side the turbo specific models from this generation. A lot of what you covered in this video is pretty typical across the board for 05-09 models. So, I’d be interested to see what you find with the turbo aspect of these cars and engines at 200K. :)

The issues pointed out in this video are pretty common and shared across all the models in this generation: H6, NA 2.5 and turbo 2.5. What I'm saying is, myself (and probably others) would be interested to see more on the turbo-specific-problems these cars can have. Since there is an almost endless slew of "fun" and catastrophic issues that can happen, especially at 200K.

I have a 06 Legacy gt with 198.9k on it. And as fun as this car is...the needy maintenance and the expensive repairs makes me miss my 2002 Honda civic. Ive pumped so much money into this car and it still comes up witj problems. I don't drive it hard. I typically accelerate keeping RPMs around 2rpm. I drive like a jazzy grandpa 90%of the time. Of course I brought it used and it originated from the New England area. So I wasn't surprised about initial repairs. But, problems have popped up continuously, mostly minor, but some major.

its my experience that absent other problems, the oem KYB shocks and struts are a real quality part. Multiple subies i've had easily break 60k on them, and one north of 100.

I just replace my 167k OE KYB struts, not because they were bad, but because I went with some Koni's for a sportier ride. The KYBs still function perfect.

Did you look at the radiator cap when you were trying to figure out the residual pressure in the cooling system? I've had the rubber gasket on a cap swella little bit and plug the overflow bottle passage and the pressure couldn't release properly. Cheers!

More of this generation of Legacy's! I'm driving a 2004 Legacy 3.0l with the 6cyl engine with roughly 360k km. Minor repairs need to be done though! :P

How funny the passenger side strut failed too on my 13 3.6 R I was at 120,000 ( I have about 1000 miles on the new strut set and they broken in quite nicely) at first I was sort of worried it was such a hard ride ) when I put those Bilsteins on, let me tell ya Robert what a difference those new struts are like Subaru had an option I think what was it the spec b legacy to have Bilsteins ?

Did you guys not get the self leveling suspension over there? My 03 foresters on its 3rd set of rear springs and shocks at 104k due to the garbage self leveling failing, iv installed pedders heavy duty springs & shocks & they're far better than the originals, car handles so much better

Had a 14 Forester. How is your oil consumption? Mine took a couple of litres between changes (10,000 km) also had to replace valve body in transmission.

@@ericripley9739 I've been using Valvoline full synthetic extended protection 0w-20 motor oil for a year now and it worked well for my 14 Forester. I changed it every 6500KM, compared to other oils, i like this one.

Assuming that this LGT comes equiped with a 5eat, can u also inspect it? My 3.0r with a 5eat has been acting up 100k miles, i did 2 transmission flush and the trans jerks when shift into drive.

Awesome inspection! Mine too has both valve covers leaking. I saw someone mentioned they loosened the motor mounts to elevate the motor a bit in order to facilitate replacing the valve cover gaskets. Would you say this is ok/safe to do? The space to do that service on this car is indeed pretty tight.

I did it on mine a few weeks ago, totally fine (and in my case necessary) to do. Just make sure to use a block of wood or something similar when jacking by the oil pan to help disperse the load, and don't go overboard, only has to come up a couple inches to get the room needed to yank the covers. I also gave the mount studs a good few whacks with a mallet as the engine wasn't lifting on the first go, not sure how common that is lol

@@ma_auto Hmm.. I’m not sure jacking the motor/transmission by the oil pan is such a good idea. Is this what you meant? That’s not a jacking point, even if using a piece of wood to disperse the weight, you can easily bend the pan and get into major trouble..I’d not use anything other than the jack up plate. Thanks though.. btw, I didn’t mean to preach/criticize your work. Even though nothing may happen, I don’t think it’s a good idea lifting the engine by the oil pan 👍🏻

i changed my turbo and the coolant line to the turbo had a banjo with a filter which was plugged causing air bubbles in the top coolant reservoir, have you heard of that before? i thought a had a blown head gasket lmao

I have a 252k mile 06 Impreza OBS. Bout it for 3k last year, yeah I know I paid a little bit to much. It also had been beat on a bit has head gaskets at 60% life left. 2 REALLY screwed up rims. Dude rallied it around as a toy. He did his own maintenance it was ok ish on maintenance. Currently getting ready to change the rear diff and transmission fluid. It's a manual if your curious. Clutch needs to be done soon ish. I decatted and tuned it for 89+ octane. It runs really well, it has a crazy amount of blowby, nearly launches the oil cap on set on, not screwed in. I know a rebuild is coming in the next 50k miles. I mean life expectancy is like 200k right?

I have a 2006 Legacy GT with 247k miles it runs and drives but I have a p0302 code and I cannot figure it out. Changed all spark plugs, air filter, coil pack and fuel injector but still have the code. It runs well but stutters in low rpms can someone help me figure this out?

Interesting to hear about the coolant pressure. I recently replaced a fuel filter on an SG5 forester and ran it for just a minute or so for post checkup. Coolant also overflowed a bit when I opened the radiator cap just like this legacy. My EJ20 engine is also in phenomenal shape (I didn't do a compression test, but I've driven for years with good gas mileage, no weird smells or sounds, and absolutely ZERO oil consumption) so maybe holding pressure is the sign of a healthy engine?? Or just a well-sealed system to the overflow tank? I'm curious why this would happen. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong please!

My 2011 wrx needed new rear struts around 140k miles. Didnt last mich longer tho cause someone hit me and there was too much rust around the damage to repair it. Although i paid 18k for the car and sure because its been my daily its not in the best shape but theyre only giving me 8900 with 149k miles. The body and a couple of the interior parts are a little rough but mechanical the car has been sound, only replacing parts when needed or when they were on their way out. Biggest complaint i had was the power steering lines at the rack cannot be removed when everything is bolted up and this ones partly my fault but after replacing the factory clutch with a heavy duty clutch a few things became problematic. First being the clutch bracket squealing likr a pig, then the firewall and then the master cylinder blew out. Again the added pressure from the heavy duty clutch caused extra damage not subarus fault. A little ridiculous that all happened but not their fault

Off topic here Mr Subaru but in need of help. I'm stationed across the country from home but my dad has been working on my 07 Forester LL Bean and seems to have reinstalled the cv axle incorrectly. He says there is now a grinding noise and the transmission light is flashing. Am I eternally screwed here on this one? Will I need a new diff/trans/both? Thanks in advance! @@jasonp410 I did the same thing. The problem was I didn't get the small axle stub seated all the way into the transmission and it stripped out because it wasn't getting full bight on the gears. Its probably toast, but maybe you can get in there and clean up the metal shavings and save it. I bought a used transmission for $400 from the parts yard and put it in. Also dropped it on my hand and got 20 stitches so be careful they are heavy.

I've got a 3.0R and it won't hold pressure, driving in summer all good never overheated at all, and doesn't use any water at all, but radiator hose is always soft. Anyone got any wild guesses what it could be? My only guess is the cap

Is there a way to deactivate a specific Check Engine code? P2441 and sometimes P2444 appears after some time and it's frustrating. I have to delete it periodically or have to look at the check engine light and the blinking Cruise control light. I don't want to change the secondary air pump nor the valves, those are the most useless parts in any car ever, and Subaru managed to build them pretty badly, and they are expensive too. How can I get rid of these two codes for good?

Find yourself a Tactrix openport and a laptop w/ ECUFlash. I removed my secondary air pump on my 2007 legacy gt entirely which required related DTCs to be deleted, the hardware & software let's you capture your ECU, edit various tables (like codes), and then reflash.

Just hit 200,000 on my '03 Forester. I replaced the Head gaskets because of oil leaking. Thought for sure I had solved my oil consumption. Well, not the case. I'm still using more oil that I like. Quart around 1500 miles. Don't see any leaks. No smoke on startup or during running. Cat cleaning up the smoke? Where's it going? I also smell coolant at some time. Thanks for your thoughts. Replaced the struts at the same time. FYI

I rebuilt mine with new rings an bearings at 200,000. It didn't cost that much more.

@@LastChanceforGas were you going through about the same amount of oil? I'm considering rebuilding it. I do hear some piston slap when it's cold. The cylinder walls looked great when I had the heads off. I didn't replace the valve seals at the advice of the machinist saying the valves wouldn't seal after pulling the keepers and springs. I really don't think that would happen. Could be wrong.

@@dans_Learning_Curve yeah that sounds like bs. I have heard a machine shop say the valve seals last forever, but they are cheap. You can do the valve seats yourself, just buy the compression tool. I did it by hand with a punch and it took forever. Don't waste a lot of money on the block like I did, just buy a hone give each bore in-n-out.

You can get 320-330 hp if you tune it , if you dont have 100 octane you need a tune for your local gas otherwise your engine not gonna last.

Hello Mr. Subaru, I have an 05 impreza RS, a friend and I replaced the clutch yesterday along with new flywheel, pressure plate and throw out bearing, after putting everything back, I went to start it, and the clutch pedal felt really soft, we bled the system and nothing changed, also the pedal doesn't return all the way and doesn't have a firm feel, what do you think could be the problem?

Grab the pedal with your hand and pump it twenty times. I tried everything on mine. This is what fixed it.

I'm still deciding which soobie will be my next one. Never had a turbo or a forester so I was thinking 06-08 forester xt but there's a super nice 2008 GT wagon with low kms.... lucky I don't have quite enough money yet lol

Agreed! 1/2 -3/4 of a quart per 3k I’m guessing. I have a LGT wagon that is getting a new short block with a few mods and my redone heads! Should be done in about a week if all our parts arrive on time.

They are for the space issue, but I would trade that for the winter driving performance any day. Putting a new short block in my 05 LGT wagon now with my redone heads and a few tasty mods while everything is out. I love these cars!

My Subaru forester is telling me it's 100F outside, when it is literally snowing. Where did I go wrong? I tried to raise him right, teach him right from wrong, to be honest and tell the truth. 😭 Where did I go wrong???!? Any thoughts on why the ambiant air temp probe died after 4 years?
