2 жыл бұрын

Finally, at the end of this episode, the 454 will be functionally back together. This is the third and final(ish) engine assembly video and starts with the long block assembled, but some time is needed to make sure everything else fits just right.
Particularly finding bolts that fit and getting a good fit/seal on the intake manifold, setting the oil pickup to pan clearance and welding on a bracket to hold it in place, carefully bolting down the oil pan, and painting the assembled engine. Not the most interesting stuff and it does take some time to get through, but important nonetheless (the paint is important because looking good is vital).
Dates of filming: April 25th, 2020 (Test fitting parts)
May 8th, 2020 (Oil pump/pan, intake, valve cover install)
May 11th, 2020 (Painting engine)
Song List (Order of First Appearance):
0:01 Wide Awake - The 126ers
5:45 Succotash - Silent Partner
13:52 Torrance Sunset - Dan Lebowitz
20:37 Twilight Train - Dan Lebowitz

With this episode, the engine is back together! It needs a lot of accessories and finishing touches still, and of course the supercharger needs to be rebuilt as well. I imagine it isn't a popular decision since everyone (including me) wants to hear this engine spit fire/cough motor oil, but I need a bit of a break from editing these and have a different video planned for the next upload. I wouldn't expect it for a few weeks, sorry to say, but know that I am working on upcoming content. THEN the priority is quickly editing the rest of these 78 Firebird videos and getting this engine to run (it still hasn't). The production gears are moving, but slowly. All I can promise is that I'm excited about the next few videos. Thank all of you so much for sticking around through a frustratingly slow series/channel!

Engine Masters on motor trend channel just did a melling pump comparison for the dodges, and they did standard, high velocity, and high capacity. The high capacity moved a shitload more volume and pressure at idle. It seems like that could be beneficial for an older motor rebuild like yours. I don't know if they offer a high capacity for the 454 but if its not a forgone conclusion, you might want to see what the specs on one are. Like the difference is significant, and I will be pay attention to oil pump specs in the future when I work on my shit, and going with higher capacity.

The combination is actually pretty well balanced. That floppy old screw blower with the staircase style intake porting, leaky valves and rival team ball park cylinder clearance will bring all the noises and period correct fuel/oil consumption, without the risk of cavitating the oil pump. And the lack of G-forces will keep the rear main seal dry. Truly a classic hand built restoration!

This is really exciting. I'm super keen to see how it runs and performs with all the factory clearance issues and home mechanic dodginess! Honestly, it's great to see you sticking it to the man in terms of what you 'should' or 'shouldn't' do to an engine when assembling it/restoring it -- just cause it's good for science

When using a torque wrench straight extensions will twist and effect how far you have to turn the wrench but will not change the torque transferred to the bolt with the same setting. If you use an impact driver the extension acts as a torsion spring absorbing the impact and can drastically lower the torque transferred to the bolt

Those cast and brushed aluminum engine paints work perfect for making things pop. I once painted a 1982 Chevy G-10 Van's valve cover and thermostat housing with brushed aluminum Duplicolor Engine paint after gasket replacements and it made it pop. The engine being a 250 Chevy straight six made those parts like the centerpiece of the engine bay literally and figuratively. Topped off with a chrome Mr. Gasket breather with new grommet and it was like 👌

Love your videos. They give me inspiration for my 71 Chevy C20 build. The truck sat 21 years untouched in a woods until a friend gifted it to me along with the title. The truck is beyond what most would consider worth saving but me being a gearhead as well as a professional welder i will be saving it. I took many pics and a few videos when rescuing it from the woods and cleaning it up. Some previous owner swapped out the original 350 V8 and auto trans with a 292 inline 6 and 4 on the floor and i will be keeping it that way. Wish i had a way to send you pics of the C20. You'd get a kick out of it i think.

That's a really big effort! to keep track of the whole build and all the aspects of the vid from filming, to all the editing all the way to the great narration. well done champ! the best part is cutting through the BS and letting us all see what really matters in a build for better or worse. I binge/marathon watched this build, hurry up with the rest your killing me! To all the critics; shut your face, this guy can obviously build one hell of a motor if he chooses to buy everything new, what he is showing us here is truly unique.

I am currently building a roller sbc 350 for my 1980 Formula and I am going to paint my engine Pontiac Blue, simply because I felt bad putting a sbc in it. I'd love to have a 400 pontiac but I can't beat the price and availability of parts for a sbc. Also thought about making a channel like this one or similar to Ronald Finger, both your channels have motivated me to finish my projects. I have a 1980 Formula and a 1984 Firebird SE, also have a 69 Mustang coupe project which was finished a few years ago

I'm surprised that with all the projects you do, you haven't invested in a paint gun. If you're looking for a great first gun, I recommend getting the DeVilbiss StartingLine. The additional clean up is a pain, but it's so satisfying using a gun, and it opens up a whole new world of paint options. Not to mention the superior atomization you get from a gun compared to a spray can.

With the amount of blow by you're going to have i would suggest a vacuum pump to recover tank with a breather installed on the tank. To go the cheaper route you could find and modify a later model smog pump (the kind that sucks fresh air from the filtered side of the airbox before the throttle body).
