I have been trying to hunt this issue down for such a long time, and I FINALLY found out how it was happening today!
I never would have thought some holes that were there from the factory would be the cause of my trunk leak, but I have a feeling those holes use to be plugged and the plugs somehow got removed or fell out. I'm not entirely sure why they are even there.
This is an issue I had not seen anyone talk about online. There are TONS of forum threads talking about trunk leaks, but I have never seen anyone mention this particular issue. It certainly took a long time to figure this one out.
I pulled up the carpet and removed interior panels, then had my friend run water from a garden hose down my back window and I watched from inside the trunk with a flashlight, and almost immediately water started gushing in through the holes shown in the video.
Anyway, my solution was to get two large washers, a nut, a bolt, (per hole) and some gasket maker.
I put a ring of gasket maker around the washer going on the exterior side of the hole, then put a washer on the interior side, put the bolt through the washers, and tightened them together to form a seal around the hole.
This has stopped any water from entering my trunk. Hopefully this holds up. If it gives out in the future, I may try to find some sort of 20mm / 3/4in rubber plugs to place in the holes, but this will do for now.
