OMG BRO MY 2000 Montero Sport just broke down the other day due to a dead battery so I bought a brand new one and it also killed that battery too within 1 day. I was at a conclusion that I was going to just Junk the car! But now that I’ve seen your video, I’ve changed my mind. I’m going to go buy the alternator and put it in myself now! I really do appreciate you and this video! You are a lifesaver brotha 🙏🏼 Thank you and God bless 💯🙏🏼💪🏽🙏🏼

Excellent training video, thanks for sharing your automotive talents. I was able to change my alternator out based on what you taught. I did get caught up on one thing, the pulley. I loosened both bolts, but on tightening the bolts, I learned it is imperative to tighten the one underneath last and to fully tighten the one facing the radiator first. It was squeaking until i loosened both and tightened in that order. Thanks again for spending the time to make this video for us Montero Sport owners! A proud owner since 2000. :)

@@Marty09933 I did my alternator replacement yesterday. Thanks to your video. But about the tip here by Dan, I found that the opposite works. The bottom bolt is tension adjustment one and needs to be adjusted first and last one to tighten is the one facing radiator with 49NM torque as per Montero Service Manual.

So did your alternator fail because of Oil leak? My Montero is losing oil from somewhere, about half a quart per month... I don't smell anything burning though. Any idea what could be the problem? Probably something very common in the Montero Sports.
@Marty099336 жыл бұрын
Andrew Isbandi yes it fail because the oil leaking on it . Check it thoroughly or have a shop check it sometimes it's hard to see where the oil leak is at .it may be burning it slowing no smoke ?

Marty09933 Thank you for the reply. I just bought a new alternator and my mechanic will install it in a few days. I will have him inspect thoroughly. I don't smell any smoke burning but I am not sure. Exhaust is not black smoke either. Will update in a few days

Marty09933 I have a 2.4 2001 galant, alternator is a 10 minute job on the 2.4... It has 210k miles on it and I've replaced it twice. The 2.4 alternators work but after a hundred thousand miles the bearing starts to squeal like a banshee. This is the first 3.0 I'll be doing, as I thought it's more hassle. At least we don't have to jack up the motor off the mount or remove the front end.

He did everything faster than me but I did it all without removing any parts from the top and without using a jack. Everything can be done from underneath. This is the easiest alternator to replace I've ever seen (I'm a amateur mechanic.... and not particularly good at all). I ran into this video to try and find a novel way to get oil out of the alternator so that it does not need to be replaced. It looked like his alternator had the same problem. I don't want to buy and install a second one. Its ridiculous how much shit gets in these.

Mr. Marty Did you have to remove a skid plate, if so, does the skid plate have to be completely removed? If anybody has oil leaking into the alternator, you need to deal with it immediately. My wife came home from work at 10:30 PM, ran in the house and yelled "MY CAR IS ON FIRE! I think, there is smoke coming out" and back out the door she went as I yelled "OPEN THE DAMN HOOD!" I threw my boots on, went outside to see smoke billowing out from underneath the now, partially opened hood. I ran out, didn't see my wife, propped the hood open, seen a small flame coming out of the alternator. I grabbed a rag off of the porch on my way out the door, as I was on the ground, crawling under the Montero I see my wife coming towards the car with the water hose running. I yelled at her NO, no damn water and shimmied my way under the vehicle and snuffed out the fire with the rag. I climbed out from underneath, got my good flashlight and seen oil all over some lines and the alternator. I pointed this out to my wife and she said "I noticed that about 10 days ago, as she checks her own oil, I just stared at her and asked why did it take 10 days and a fire before I knew that there was an oil leak and I heard.....crickets, and only crickets as we live out in the boonies Her valve cover was dripping oil and it was blowing all over the engine bay. Here is the problem with waiting to correct the oil leak, well besides having a fire, but the fire melted the plug that snaps into the alternator. I can't find a new plug/pigtail as I have no clue as to what the part number is on this pigtail but, I bent the pins/prongs out a little on the alternator and the plug seems to hold. I don't like this tension, or "Bent Prong" set up because it may fall off on a bumpy road, or from vibration and then I will have to go to where the wife is, hook up the logging chain and tow her vehicle home, however many miles from the house the plug fell out. This went from a simple valve cover replacement to a valve cover gasket replacement, new alternator, and a trip to the "Do it yourself" junkyard to climb through who knows what to salvage a clip and pigtail
@philyamascunt75186 жыл бұрын
Mr. Marty No problem, I work on my own and my family member's vehicles and most of the things that go wrong, beside the initial problem is because some of my family members, just like many people today, never address the things that create secondary damage and cost Another thing about the Montero is that the spare that came with my wife's Montero has a steel rim, I don't know if all 2002, or other year Monteros came with a steel rim with the spare tire or not but people need to check this out When I was under my wife's Montero checking brake lines or something involving the rear of her Montero, I looked at her spare tire, the rim was rusted so bad that I let out a few "Good" words and my wife heard them clearly from 50 yards away. The rim looked so bad that I pulled her good tire off of the front passenger side, mounted the spare just to check the reliability of her spare and, as I suspected, the rim was junk. The rim rusted bad enough that the spare had developed a slow leak at the bead area, and within 45 minutes was flat. So I called the closest junk yard and luckily they had a wrecked Montero in the yard that came in 2 weeks earlier and I was really lucky because the aluminum rim was an exact match to her factory rims, which are a little different than what I normally see I told the "Yard Rat" that I would be over within the next two hours, I showed up and the guy had pulled the 2 best rims, he also told me that for $20 I could choose which one I wanted so I grabbed the best looking rim and the easiest to clean up, gave the guy $25 and told him to have a beer or few on me

I forgot to add that I really like your videos, your videos are efficient, get to the point and explain the important things in detail, without 20 minutes of extra, or filler talk, so easy to understand that a goof ball such as myself would know exactly how to do the job Keep up the good work sir! My only complaint about the Montero is that the Japanese made everything so small and compact that it's hard to get our hands into those tiny spaces haaa. I have a 18 month old granddaughter, I may have to start teaching her sooner than I had planned, or at the least point out what I need her to do for grandpa, with her tiny hands
