in this video we are working on a 2000 vw beetle with a 1.8 turbo, customer complaint is the vehicle wont start, it was towed in from another shop and all they said was that it jumped time and needed a cyl head and timing belt job, I hope you enjoy this video and thanks for watching.

You forgot to disable fuel or spark, the engine was trying to start and that screws up relative compression tests. Great video

Well Casey. It wasn't a big deal that I didn't disconnect fuel or spark. And honestly the reason I didn't disconnect fuel or spark was because the veh was a crank no start and it didn't try to start until I was shooting the video. The point of the test was to see when our spark was occurring in relation to top dead center and not so much the compression humps. By me not disconnecting the fuel supply, yes it did affect how accurate the test would be if we were looking specifically at the compression and not where spark was occurring.

Basically, you should check your spark plugs, see which one has coolant residue and that should indicate which cylinder.

Letting it run to 2bar (30psi) can easily burst the radiator, heater matrix and other plastic housings. Maximum coolant pressure is below 15 psi, the cap releases it beyond that so it doesn't damage other parts.

Have a question. I have a bug just like that color, blown head gasket. Like im watching you diagnose my car right now. I really want to rebuild my engine maybe have a little extra fun (power) to this thing. Is it worth putting money into it and doing a rebuild or is it just a waste of $$$. Thanks.

Try a firstlook pressure sensor on the reservoir and trigger one coil. That is a quick way to find the offending cylinder. The increase in the pressure waveform will match the ignition coil with the firing order.

I don’t know if you’ve realized, I’m sure you have but fuel should have been disabled on the relative compression test because the partial combustion was throwing off the results. At least this will be good for any one else watching.

Ever try having the pressure gauge hookeed up and blowing air into the cylinder using a leak down tester(around 50to, check for a pressure increase on the tester. Cheaper way (but messy ) fill the overflow / pressure bottle to the top with water then blow air into the cylinder, watch out for the geyser lol

In Europe, especially in the less rich parts of it, head gasket jobs are nothing unusual. Mostly because the gasket starting to leak by itself for the vehicle's age, but even after an overheat condition they do that.

See this is my issue, just not a coolant smell. I went to change my plugs and realized I needed a special tool to do it so I put the manifold back on, bolted it up, connected the vacuum lines up and now it won’t start and I smell gas as if the injectors are firing but the plugs won’t fire them. Except the car ran perfect this evening when I parked it.

Hi Tom when you did a relative compression test did you cut the fuel pump or ignition etc ... I think that the compression was not accurate because it was trying to start I think now what I think happened is the plastic water pump impeller broke or slipped so the engine overheated then blew the head gasket then it melted the side flange then they replaced the part filled the coolant system and the car did not start after could you remove the thermostat then check if the water pump is broken but I could be wrong about the pump it’s just that I saw lots of broken pump.
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics 6 жыл бұрын
I did not cut the fuel and I should have to make the relative compression test accurate, your water pump theory could be correct, I have seen a few broken pumps also, another test your could do is pull the small hose off the coolant bottle aim it inside the coolant jug and has some one rev the rpms and you watch for flow out of the hose, just don't do it with a hot coolant system

So, the coolant bottle should have some pressure, but not too much?..i mean, if compared to the radiator whats the difference between those two?
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics 6 жыл бұрын
Eventually it would have pressure after the coolant system warms up and usually you can open the coolant bottle when it's at operating temp. You just open it slowly. But not after 15 seconds of cranking Or 2 minutes of idling.

Just jumping in for our story about our 'lovely' 2000 beetle. Might assist someone else? we lost our speedo. Gear changes all over the place! Poor running. The first few models had temp sender UNDER water fill bottle. A SEAL eventually perishes and will PUMP water through the WHOLE electrical system. ( through sheath) Fry the computer, even FILL the rear tail lights with water! We found a VW Tech bulletin on the issue! About 2003 the sender was moved on top of water bottle. Cost us thousands.....so be warned
