New York Yankees 4 at New York Mets 2, F -- The Yankees held a three-games-to-one advantage as the modern-day Subway Series headed into Game 5 at Shea. Through eight, each club had pushed across just two runs against tough pitching -- the Yanks picking up solo home runs by Bernie Williams and Derek Jeter, and the Mets scoring two unearned against starter Andy Pettitte. Mets starter Al Leiter was still on the mound heading into the ninth, when the Yankees, taking advantage of a few unusual plays and a clutch, two-out single from veteran Luis Sojo, scored two runs. Bottom nine: Enter Sandman. Mariano Rivera took the mound and with Mike Piazza up as the tying run with two outs, got him to fly out to the deepest part of the ballpark for the last out, and the Yankees' third consecutive World Series title (and fourth in five seasons), putting the finishing touches on their 26th Championship and their end-of-the-century dynasty.

Yankee fan here. Watching it back in 2000, I was just happy when Sojo got the hit. Having watched it a couple of times since then, my heart breaks for Al Leiter in that moment. What a game for him. Not meant to be. And you knew when Posada worked out a walk, the Yankees were going to score.

What's amazing about the 2000 New York Yankees world championship squad is that they stumbled into the playoffs going 3-18 in their final 21 regular season games. In the playoffs, they were pushed to the Best-of-5 limit against the Oakland Athletics and were in trouble against the Seattle Mariners in the ALCS until Bernie Williams hit a clutch bomb in Game 2 and then Roger Clemens Game 4 15-K performance put the Yankees back into vintage Yankee mode.

+Ben D And the roster is a far cry from the Core Four era.. their best player in 2015 was Mark Teixiera (3.8 WAR).. well below the days when Jeter, Posada, Cano, Pettite, and a juiced A-Rod were the team's MVPs. And the pitching staff, while young, is fragile.. plus they need fresh blood in their offense, as many of their current pieces are aging badly (A-Rod, Tex, Ellsbury, even Gardner).

Now it's pretty loud consistently and playoff games are always packed and chaotic the way they should be. This is the series that started making me a Baseball fan and a Die Hard Mets fan. Living in NY as a 11 year old at the time I was in 6th grade at a school named I.S 73 in Elmhurst/Flushing Queens NY. I knew nothing about baseball, all I knew is that me and my family are from the Dominican Republic and my dad would watch baseball on this mini TV box in the garage on a nice day. He would always mention some players and I would always hear about Pedro Martinez, Mike Piazza, Sammy Sosa, Mark Mcweier, Ken Griffy Jr, Vladimir Guerrero, Derek Jeter... but I knew nothing about the sport, all I cared about was wwf wrestling and pokemon at the time. Then when the world series/subway series came around that october, it was EVERYWHERE! I'm 29 now and iv had the blessing of living in different states in America in my life but I never seen nothing like the world series in the year 2000 in NYC. Never experienced nothing like it, I mean this was everywhere you go people were talking about it. Half the city were cheering for The Mets and half were cheering for the yankees. I remember going to school around that September especially October and seeing teachers and students with yankees and mets jerseys hats and shirts . It was crazy, the whole school!!!! It was my first year of junior high middle school and in between classes we would take 10 minutes to walk to the next class and every 2 minutes you would hear students rioting yelling, some altogether chanting "LET'S GO YANKEES" Some "LET'S GO METS" and it was the whole school all day long during those weeks. It was like being at the game, students who didn't know eachother were high fiving and chanting together, and it was like this everywhere in NYC. During all this I knew I had to make a desigion and choose a team and since back in 1997 I was taking to shea stadium for my 7th birthday that year and both my sisters chose to band wagon the yankees, and my mom n dad liked the Mets, I figured I choose to band wagon the Mets ! just to be in on the whole wave trend. Little did I realize that was the birth of a wonderful great NY METS journey. Win or Lose I love the Mets forever! From 2000 to 2004 I was band wagon fan then I started watching some of 2005 season after I witnessed game by game what the redox did to the yankees in 04, and learning that the Mets signed Pedro Martinez. After that it made me study baseball and actually learn the rules and the 05 Mets were starting to get interesting again and so by 2006 and on I was officially a DIE HARD METS FAN. I hope we will win at least one or many more world series in my lifetime and I will cry like a baby when/if that happens. There's been other teams that's waited a long time and so am I willing to wait :) LGM

Nothing will ever come close to this dynasty, I just find it funny, growing up as a Sox fan, that the "extreme dominance" over the Red Sox that the Yankees have, always historically, but also recently, that "recently" is now only 5-3, crazy to think that considering how far the two franchises were from each other in 2000.

The Giants are the only team that even came close to this (titles in 2010, 2012, 2014) but the big differences are obviously the three-peat for the Yankees and the fact that the Giants missed the postseason altogether during the in-between years (2011, 2013)

I came to this video to watch Derek Jeter's momentum-shifting solo home run. Kris Bryant's performance for the Cubs in the last couple of games reminded me of Jeter in this game and in Game 4. Solo home runs are only worth one run of course, but they can be so huge momentum-wise. The Bryant solo homers reminded a lot of Jeter's in how they inspired his teammates and demoralized opponents.

Ya for sure, they really haven't gotten anywhere in over a decade. I'm wondering if it's management that is at fault for that or is it a little bit of everything. Although I think the fans need to be more realistic now and days because your not going to see another dynasty like this team in a long time so a world series appearance/wins here and there will have to do. I know telling Yankee fans to be realistic might get me in trouble lol.

I remember watching this game so well. That 9th inning with Sojo's 2 run single. What a moment. Going for the three peat against the Mets was big to Yankee fans. We appreciated this one. I love Al Leiter and felt heartbroken for him. He pitched his ass off. He deserved better. He got beat by a walk and two seeing eye singles that weren't hit all that well. As Yankee fans found out in 2001 losing from a non well hit single is really rough. Diamondbacks punished us next year the same way. It's heartbreaking. Al Leiter was incredible in this series.

They are the biggest reason why the Braves never won another title after 1995. Atlanta likely beats anyone else in 1996 and 1999 (should have won in 1996 regardless) and even if the Braves had gotten to the series in 1998, 2000, 2001 or 2003 the Yankees would have been waiting for them. 1997 and 2002 were the only two opportunities to play someone other than the Yankees in the World Series and the Braves fell apart in the playoffs both of those years (against the Marlins in '07 and the Giants in '02). The 2004 and 2005 Braves had no business being in the playoffs to begin with.

@@ProudBostonian I don’t really buy that whole “they bought championships” argument. Their very best players were homegrown. Jeter was drafted. So was Rivera, so was Pettite, so was Bernie and Posada. In fact, they ALMOST traded away Rivera to Seattle for a random guy named Felix Fermin when they weren’t sure about Jeter starting in 96, AND nearly demoted Jeter. Had they done that, no dynasty, no 2 Hall of Famers. It was a freak accident involving their shortstop breaking his arm that caused them to cancel those plans, keep Jeter and Rivera and the rest is history.

2:38:16 My favorite moment when Luis Sojo hit a base hit up the middle and give the Yankees the World Series win. I actually wore out the VHS tape as I kept playing over and over. I still have that tape in storage. I'm glad it's been posted here. Lots of Yankees fans roaring at Shea stadium 🤣

Thank you for the 2011 title compliment. It happens in all sports. Teams who have longer championship droughts have fans who are either still bitter about their last title or have yet to win one bring up crappy things like series wins head-to-head which hasn't rattled anybody since they didn't win a title to back it up.

Other cities don't understand how cool it was to play the series in NY entirely. No stupid travel time to another time zone. I guess the 89 SFO/OAK series was the closest comparison...but it didn't have that NY flair - it just had a fuckin earthquake.

I was 10 when this World Series occurred, and I remember vividly the heavy baseball atmosphere here in New York at the time of this World Series, which made it very exciting for me, even though the team I was rooting for lost. I would give anything to have the excitement of the Subway [World] Series again! (although I would like the result to be the opposite of this world series, of course xD)

+thenightspot Not really. There were only 31 games in 2005 where a pitcher went more than 125 pitches. Compare this to 2000 when there was 160 games. Most of these pitchers were off-speed users. Leiter used the cutter and fastball which takes a heavier toll on the arm.
@generatorx

Leiter had gone about 208 innings that year, averaging about 115-120 pitches per outing. He was going a bit more in post season -about 125. Leiter was not used to going that far into games. He ran out of gas.

As of 2020, it is the only time the Yankees and Mets met in the World Series, in contrast to the multiple Subway Series involving the Dodgers and Giants. The only current two-team market not to see their teams meet in the World Series today is Los Angeles. The only former two-team market to see both teams make the World Series in the same year is St. Louis.

@@hcab1479 That doesn't matter. The Yankees had 26 WS wins up to that point, which included 4 of the last 5. And after losing in 2001, they've never been able to recover. They've only won 1 championship since. Which is poor by Yankee standards.
@hcab1479
@hcab1479 4 жыл бұрын
@@YTWarrior100 You are ignorant if you actually think that the 01 World Series is the reason the NY Yankees have only won one World Series since then. The reason they only have won one is because they had atrocious pitching from 04-08 and overpaid past their prime players after 2010. Even then they have fielded a competitive team on a yearly basis unlike Arizona which has been a third rate organization since their lone world series championship.
