The first ride on the 2000 Yamaha R1 project bike now that the bike is completed as well as a bit of a review. As fun as it is to finally ride the bike it's sad to see what age does to a bike that was once top of it's class.

Men, your videos are just awesome! I discovered your channel lately trought the tire tablet channel and I instantly decided to follow you. Now, for this R1 project, my first bike was the 97 YZF-750 similar colored sheme. Loved it keeps it from 2006-2018. Then, found a deal on a 01 R6 again red & white colored scheme. I guess I just like this mix so what you did was heartfelt both in term of R1 heritage and in terme of look. Thank you so much for your work ethics. Last but not the least, the vibe you bring in is amazing keep it up !

Great video man, beautiful restoration. I will say I don’t think your giving the bike enough credit, my 2001 r1 puts a bike length on my buddy’s 2008 r1 until 160. The bike is fast, it’s a still a blast to ride, and it will surprise the hell out of anyone who isn’t careful. It really was a beautiful creation.

Nothing heavy about the original R1s. Over half of them were totatled within the first few years because back then there were no electronics to make up for your lack of talent. Short wheelbase had the front rolling up in 1st gear. It wouldn't just get light, it would try to flip you over! That suspension just needs to be refreshed because the thing should be on rails and NOT bounce like that. Biggest complaint in those days was the slight front end headshake under accel which was easily remied with a steering damper. Legendary bike for sure and it wasn't until a certain GSX-R1000 hit the market in 2001 that it would be dethroned. Great job on the vid!

Mate I’m a gsxr1000 k6 and I love the history behind the k5,k6 regarding performance and the bmw s1000rr but my all time favourite bike to look at is the 1998-1999 and 2000-2002 Yamaha r1 in blue. I’d love to find one used and just polish it up.

Nice bikes! I have the predecessor, a 1997 Yamaha Yzf1000R Thunderace with 24,650 miles on the clock. I use it as an every day ride... It`s a perfect way to free my mind and bring a few of my passions together ~ Motorcycles, photography, and beautiful scenery. It may not be be as fast or as good looking as the up to date R1M, but it still delivers a lot of smiles per mile. Keep up the good work. Best wishes from the Lone Wolf in the lakes.

My partner has a 98 R1 and it has been through many crashes and has done over 40000 miles but still rides just as well as it did the day he bought it. Things like the suspension can be adjusted to become stiffer, brake pads can be changed to make them more effective and if you raise the tank up by a few cm, then you can get a lot more air in and it will do a lot better. The modern R1s are only a bit more powerful than the original and my partner's can still do 170mph, even after being geared down for the race track. The only complaint I'd have is the frankly terrible positioning for a pillion XD But seriously, these bikes are brilliant and all of the issues you're finding are just little niggles that can be adjusted and resolved.
@ChaosCauses
@ChaosCauses 6 жыл бұрын
They're incredible bikes and I'm not trying to take away from that fact. I actually want to make a video addressing my complaints because you're right when saying they can be fixed. However personally I think there is a considerable difference in power, I'm not talking top end speed but torque. Modern R1's with an exhaust make close to 200BHP whereas this left the factory with 150 and will have lost a few in the last 18 years. Also an R6 makes a 133 from the factory which isn't far off of the R1's 150 but this is just my opinion there's no doubt that it's a fast motorcycle.

Awesome, its still such an incredible bike given its age, like you said it really pathed the way for the litre class. It still has serious power, refreshing the fork oil and rear shock will really bring the handling up. I've beaten newer machines on my 99, not because i'm an amazing rider but because i'm confident with the bike and at around 130 rwhp in stock form it still has serious power on tap, how often is 200bhp actually used. You're right about braking, first thing I did on my old zx7r is put a radial master cylinder and newer calipers on and it seriously changed the braking, this bike was brought out when the gameboy colour was revolutionary after all. Great video again, if you're on instagram, check out my R1 on @captain_carb

Do you guys have separate license classes for bikes too down there?:D Here you are only able to get powerful bikes like this if you ride for at least 2 years with an A2 license (that you can get when you are 18) or if you are 24 years old. Im turning 24 next January, and im thinking of buying one and restrict its power lets say to 90HP for the first year or so, then get the limiter off. I really love how these bikes look like, and as far as power goes, an R6 is pretty close to it, so getting an R6 or an R1 wouldnt really matter in that respect, but the R6s are physically a bit smaller and I need every centimeter possible as im a big guy (200cm tall). Maybe limit the throttle so it only revs to lets say 7K? I will see how it will be solved! Great video by the way!

Chaos Causes, have you considered renewing the suspension? Just put in new springs, new oil, sliders and seals and you should be ready to go. The suspension shouldn't be that bad IMO. I don't think you would be able to press the front fork past half of it's range just by jumping on it slightly in the garage.
@ChaosCauses
@ChaosCauses 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't have anything left in my budget to rebuild the suspension even though I wanted to but at the end of the day I think it would need new inner cartridges to be as good as it needs to be
@mattk6343
@mattk6343 6 жыл бұрын
New springs and oil make a huge difference. I did it on my 1997 CB Sevenfifty and the fun factor of the motorbike went through the roof. Inner cartridges were not necessary, as they were not bent, or damaged. Only seals, springs and oil.

I say this only to help but I think your r1 is sick. It should pull wheelies at will not sometimes get light or lift. And the hanging rev part? No good. Is it stock header? You did mention exup. Could be as simple as very out of adjustment cables or stuck valve, exup that is. If exup motor it should show a tech code. And the carb work isn't done. And rebuild those forks. Theres much more to get out of that bike. But could be totally wrong and it's not my bike. Good work getting it this far!
@ChaosCauses
@ChaosCauses 6 жыл бұрын
Haha I appreciate you trying to help man and there's always more you can do to a bike to make it better but the point is after 18 years most bikes have been ridden hard. Even after the work and money I've put in it's still not exceptional. The exup is working perfectly I did that when I repainted the exhaust. Keep in mind the gearing has been changed and I live at altitude in Johannesburg which means all NA engines produce less power than at sea level. I'm sorry if I upset you but this is just my honest opinion on the bike.

I bought my 1999 R1 early 1999, 150HP, no software and riding aids to protect you from stupidity. Those were the days.

R6 is a great moto but how is it better then r1? R1 is comfy, tourquey and pops wheelies better.

Nice vid but you need to get some bottoms to go with your jacket.

I fully support protective gear but I ride everyday, sometimes 3 times a day and if I had to change what I'm wearing every single time I ride I wouldn't enjoy riding anymore. A jacket, gloves and helmet is tolerable but I'd rather take the risk than ruin the spontaneity and joy of just going out riding.
