Before the first strains of Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" echoed in movie theaters (and the public consciousness for decades to come), 2001: A Space Odyssey was a novel by Arthur C. Clarke. Stanley Kubrick made a lot of adjustments in his adaptation, and we’ll give you the full tour! Subscribe: goo.gl/9AGRm
2001: A Space Odyssey is a landmark in visual and cinematic storytelling, but it was a book first or not first... or simultaneously? We're not sure. So, how did the story get from the stage to the screen? There were a lot of changes involved. So many changes, in fact, that we had to split this video into two! Come back in two weeks for the rest of the differences!
Have you read 2001: A Space Odyssey, or Arthur C. Clarke’s other works? What do you think of the changes Kubrick made in his adaptation? Did we leave anything out of part 1 that you hope to see in Part 2? What’s your favorite Stanley Kubrick movie?
What other works would you like to see us explore on What’s The Difference?

Glad you guys hit on Clarke’s HAL being far more tragic than Kubrick’s. Book HAL was less menacing, more like a panicked animal, terrified of death. And let’s not forget, “my god, ITS FULL OF STARS”!

The movie was not based on the novel, it was based on the screenplay written by both Kubrick and Clarke, which Clarke then turned into a novel while Kubrick made the film.

BINARYGOD Really, I thought that it was based on a short novella called: The Sentinal, that was later expanded into Sentinel for Eternity ?
@xBINARYGODx
@xBINARYGODx 7 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey314159 Perhaps, but both of them working together on the script - which was apparently a nightmare for Clarke as Kubrick kept demanding rewrites and was generally not happy with how it was coming out (etc.). At some point, with the script technically not finished in either on their minds, they split and Clarke went off to write a novel based on the events of the script (changing or explaining anything however he wanted) and Kubrick left to do whatever he wanted based on that script.

barrybadrinath69 I watched it on the way to Wisconsin. Full blast, on headphones. It was not a pleasant sound. The day prior I had gone to a WWII re-enactment. I can honestly say that the alarm sounds damaged my ears more than the Tanks and machine gun fire yesterday. Honestly I really didn’t like the film, I know that many enjoy it but I think it’s rather boring. I guess I’m just not patient.

2:25 - 1 to 16 to 14??? Kubrick's monolith is a pseudo-massive 2 by 4. 1x16x14 would either look like a thick piece of paper laying on the ground or standing up vertically. Where did you get that statistic? MATH. Or maths for the Brits. Science. -Bone

Wimpie, Yes, that is pointed out in the novel, *and* in this video. The point being that the Monolith in the movie is NOT given that ratio of dimensions. But the point that James is making is that the ration described in this video, appears to be incorrect. And it is.

8:40 ... the TMA-1 monolith on the moon didn't emit SOUND per se (it was in vacuum, after all), it emitted a powerful radio signal. The astronauts heard it because it was on a wide enough frequency band to be picked up by their helmet radioes. Significantly, the radio beam was aimed *at Saturn* in the novel, which was the real reason why Discovery One's flight plan was altered to go to Saturn instead of Jupiter.

To show us the unfolding of human history through the progressive stages of development and alterations human society went through, and in which human beings changed themselves becoming closer in the realization of their full human potential. Okay, I'm over here on your most recent ep! ;) LOL! Not a Kubrick fan by a long shot, but this movie definitely set the visual bar for the SciFi genre! This, 'Jurassic Park', 'Terminator 2', 'LOTR' trilogy (not 'The Hobbit' trilogy) and 'Evil Dead [2013]' are like Exhibit A on why SFX should be largely practical! CGI should be used sparingly, adding to SFX and cleaning them up instead of replacing them! BTW, I also never knew this was a collaborative effort!

Kubrick's astonishing visuals have a mesmerizing impact. Although reading is swiftly atrophying, a book allows the imagination of the reader full rein. Any movie is a director's perspective on the story. I read 2010 by Clarke five times before seeing Hyam's take on it.

The film is not an adaptation of a novel. Yes, the story incorporated ideas from Clarke's short story "The Sentinel" and "Encounter in the Dawn", but the novel and book were written concurrently. Clarke adjusted his novel based on footage that was filmed. Yes, there are differences between novel and film, but as Clarke says in his author's note to 2010, "[B]oth projects proceeded simultaneously, with feedback in each direction. Thus I often had the strange experience of revising the manuscript AFTER viewing rushes based upon an earlier version of the story."

I'd love to see you do Arthur C. Clarke's novel The City and the Stars, but unfortunately you can't because it was never filmed. However, you could compare it with its earlier version, Against The Fall of Night.

As a fan of both the movie and the novel, I had always wondered why Kubrick changed the planet destination from Saturn to Jupiter, when Saturn was so instrumental a choice in the book. Now I find out that it was simply an inability to render Saturn's rings properly for the movie. But the significance of Saturn in the book was profound. In order to know where the signal coming from TMA1 was directed, the book used an anomaly of one of Saturn's moons. The moon Japetus is visually six times brighter on one side of its orbit than the other. Clark made the point that this was like a 'blinking beacon' to those who would eventually understand it, that this place was special.

a part of the game Live A Live is based heavily on this film . The Robots chapter is space oddity mixed with a hint of alien . Essentially you play as a small robot named cube in a space ship controlled by an ai that goes nuts and tries to kill everyone on the ship. The ai even looks like the ai from the movie. The Alien part is that they have an alien on the ship that breaks loose because of the ai. also the book reminds me of Chrono Trigger with the whole alien being comes to earth and rapidly evolves apes for some reason
