Well what about you started hearing it drove it home parked it and drove it to the store an then the main seal or the back axle? The round circle on the back axle just busted out oil nocked hard asf this all happen after I got it stuck

My 2012 is making a noise just like this not quite as loud but I’ve pen pointed it to where it’s coming from the bellhousing sounds the loudest where the starter is basicly im so ccnfused as well I had a 6l80 swap done cause my 4l60 blew out and on my 6l80 the torque converter went out to! So I had go with billet now im hearing the most annoying tick noise from the bellhousing!

It's the flex plate my guy, have to get loctite on there and tighten them up.

It was constant from start up, it did fluctuate with driving slightly, but that only made sense seeing how the speed of the flex plate varied with speed. Hope that helps

I know this is 4 yrs old but I'm having the same problem you described but I noticed that in reverse and neutral the sound disappears...did you ever figure it out ?

Oil pressure is 40 at idle and 60 ish while driving. I'm 99% sure it's the flex plate at this point. Opinions?

How about a 2000 cadillac esclade, vortex 5.7 4x4, oil pressure went crazy, then heard the noise, doesn't knock at idle, starts knocking about 10+ mph. Been parked all most 6 months, 2 mechanics , one said new motor, other said new tyranny. Rebuilt motor 68000 miles ago. I need advice please. Single mom on a budget, trying to figure this out on my own. After getting screwed over by my now old mechanic, not replacing parts I paid him to. Ughhh

I'm having a similar issue with this on a 2006 Yukon XL it is making that noise and it has 40psi while cold but when it warms up it goes down to 30sih

The noise was a constant no matter how fast you went. The clicks kept time with the rotation of the transmission.

@@Whitey3755 oil pressure seems normal, long story short I had a misfire on cylender 4 for the longest finally realized it was a collapsed and broken lifter. drove on it for so long that a new clanking noise developed. fixed the lifter a day ago and she runs like new. Just left with this weird sound from bottom back side of engine. Maybe torque converter? Its tricky, also still getting P0443 EVAP code replaced the purge solenoid twice and vent valve once. runs fine just has trouble cranking after fueling. Damn old car falling apart haha

aubeast86 At the time I was not equipped to fix it myself so I took it in, and they charged me like $450. But the process is, remove the drivelines, cross members, and various hoses. Then back off the transmission with a proper jack, then change it out from there.

Nice. I'd definitely pay that for this job but I'm pretty good with a wrench too and I have a trans lift as well. I have a 6000# lift in my garage too but this beast weighs 5400# if Im not mistaken so I'm a little weary about putting it up in the air. Thoughts?

@@Mackaveborn well, from the research I did before and after, it should have been either that or the o-ring on the oil pickup tube, but that allegedly has more of a hollow sound. Could be lifter/valvetrain noise?

What led you to the crankshaft position sensor replacement?

You pushed the sensor down to far, Reseat the sensor a tad bit higher, just enough to start the mounting bot

Mine was the flex plate, it was cracked. It is common for them to get loose as well. If they're loose for too long, the holes apparently will get out of round and cause slop which will cause a similar noise also.

@@bigboybuilder77 Hmm. I was going to suggest the o-ring on the pickup tube. That can wear out and cause the tube to bang off the oil pan and cause a similar noise that would keep time with the oil pump. Where does it sound like the noise is coming from exactly?

It sounded like it was the flex plate. Thats where the noise was concentrated at.

I Installed it myself, 2nd time on my 93 k1500, but this time I changed throttle bodies so I could use a 1992 700r4, from my other truck,(bad frame) .

Yep it was. I had spent the previous weekend tearing the motor down and trying to see if there were rods stuck, changed the O-ring on the oil pickup tube, checked my main bearings. All of that. Then only to realize it was the flex plate all along...

Pull the inspection cover and give the wheel a wiggle. If it doesn't move then it's cracked, if it does, get some long open end wrenches and do it from the port.

@tylivinlife2238 Yep, drive line, transfer case and transmission all needs to be slid back 8-12". It isn't fun. I did the first one myself, the second and third I paid to have done.

I started hearing it when I would warm it up in the mornings, park, neutral, drive, didn't matter. But the cadence didn't change with the RPMs like rod knock would. It only changed when I put it in drive and started accelerating. It kinda slowed when in reverse, but just slightly.

Raymond Weaselhead If you have water in the oil, that's a head issue. But that's probably not causing your knocking, although i'm sure it isn't helping. Sounds like a full rebuild is in your future.

Sounds like you should change the transmission filter first. Possible rebuild in your future.

Found out the noise was just a bad starter and for the gear slip it’s a bad sensor

That would be my first assumption, however it could be a heat shield as well. Unless it sounds like it's keeping time with the motor/transmission.

@@Whitey3755 the car runs and shifts perfectly, we were concerned it was an engine knock because of how loud it gets but seeing some of these videos it makes me think that it is this torque converter problem. When I or my dad stop accelerating you can still hear it, we didn’t think it was there when it was idling at first but after letting the car run we noticed that it is in fact there just not as loud. My dad said when he was standing in front of my car with the hood open it sounded like it was towards the back of the engine. I’m hoping it is this issue because it is way easier of a fix than an engine knock😅😅 my question would be, did this sound get worse for you when you increased rpm? Like it rattles even worse as the speed increases

@@samantha2341 Yes the knock kept time with the transmission. The flex plate was notoriously bad in my year of Tahoe. First thing I would do is pull the inspection cover from the bellhousing and start the truck and see if it's louder. If you can get a good enough look at it you may be able to see cracks with a good flashlight

@@Whitey3755 ended up being a rod knock, engine took a crap on me when I was taking it to the dealership. Got my money back and now have a 2012 Chevy Equinox in near perfect condition. What a week that was!

Only when I took it out. The cracking is right around the hub where the bolts are. If you can get one of those little snake camera deals and stick it in the inspection cover you should be able to see it.

@@luisrosales5011 Yes, I thought it was the oil pickup tube o-ring at first. It can get loose and bang off the bottom of the oil pan and create a noise similar, but not as consistent.

Check your carrier bearing on the driveline. Either that or you may need a transmission rebuild because the synchros are going out

Check the starter a good way is to find hill with a good decline and if you notice it stops it could be a bad starter not disengaging or you can use a jack and lift the back side

check your starter. take it completely off and make sure that the starter gear isn’t sliding on the shaft. it should be slid back in the housing. i pulled mine off and it wasn’t disengaging

I got mine at Carquest for $139, then it's about 6 hours of work. Good luck man.

robert lee no, it kept time with the Rpms. If yours is only doing it when it's warming up, that sounds like rod knock or the oil pan pickup o-ring

Sounds like piston slap to me if the piston is worn down and the engine is heating up the position will go back to its normal size and the sound will go away

Nope, it was the flex plate itself. Had spiral fractures starting from the hub in the center and heading towards the edges.

I think you either have 2 separate issues, or something else entirely going on. Because this wouldn't cause overheating.

Pull your oil pan, check the o-ring on your oil pickup tube. While you're in there, look for metal

@@claudegregory7098 What doesn't show up in the video very well is when I sprayed the white paint on it and then started it the paint acted as sort of a timing indicator. That's how I figured it out. The bolts were tight and I couldn't get any movement from the plate. The plate was actually cracked in a spiral pattern emanating from the center "hub" where the bolts go.

So if the white paint moves from painted position ..like up it's cracked

@@claudegregory7098 Not exactly, I could see the white paint spot appear through that inspection port every time it clicked. It was the first time I was able to see what part was making the click noise.

So I could see it, like a timing mark. I figured if the paint matched the tick that would be the source of the noise

jason wood My guess is there's a fracture in there. You may be able to get a pry bar in there and see if it snaps or pings when pressure is applied.

jason wood The fractures are usually starting at the hub in the center and then over time they'll crack outward.

David Mendoza that's how mine sounded when it started, I would pull the inspection cover like I did, and take a look at the flex plate.

When it started the first time (it happened again, almost a year to date), the noise was almost in passing, like once it warmed up, it went away somewhat. Then gradually got worse over the course of a month or less. It isn't eminently fatal to your motor and transmission, but if it decides to let go, it'll take your bellhousing out with it. I've yet to figure out who is making the upgraded ones, but with Car quest's warranty the replacement was free. I doubt I'll own it until the next one goes, but if I do I'll report back here when I find out who makes the best one.

@@TILEROB 😂 No. Supposedly if there's play in the crankshaft or transmission main shaft it will happen, I put 2 in the Tahoe before I got rid of it.

Omar Soto pull the inspection cover like I do in the video. Take a spray can of white or bright colored paint and spray a spot in the hole. Then start it and look in the hole, the paint spot will act like a timing mark and you should hear a tick every time it comes past the hole. Or, if you have one of m.harborfreight.com/digital-inspection-camera-61839.html?Fnot%20provided you can thread it up into the space and you'll be able to physically see the cracks around the hub

Omar Soto pretty much, you have to drop it down about a foot and back about a foot to allow clearance to work in there. Rickafix has a video on how to do it
