In this episode I show you how to easily diagnose a Rod Knock vs a Lifter Tick at home in a matter of minutes. The difference in the sounds in a rod knock. plus, at the end I let you hear what an actual rod knocking sounds like on my 2003 Ram 1500 5.7L hemi

Hey auto guy diy love the old school methods for sure that’s literally the way I learned I just wanted to add if a guy didn’t have a stethoscope you can always take a long screwdriver and place the flathead (etc) end on the valve cover or oil pan and put your ear on the handle end it also works great to single out what pulley or tensioner has failed along with many other uses just make sure your hoodie strings necklaces etc are not going to get into moving parts such as fans belts etc thanks for your time and videos

Good video. For those curious Lisle makes a mechanic-specific stethoscope kit with two different listening rods to detect either mechanical or air/vacuum type noises. Part # is 52750 and costs a little over 20 bucks.

Thanks for this video you have a new subscriber! So awesome… thankfully it actually did just need oil. Not my car but I guess I’m the mechanic in my neighborhood😂😅.. Full credit to you for making me crawl around underneath the car and listen to all the noises… then I went and figure out reasons I could possibly be knocking, and it was simply the oil. I never put any oil in it they had an oil change over 11,000 miles so word to the wise - just check your oil people

This is EXCELLENT advice! Thank you! I am going to get into flipping cars and I can obviously run a compression test to really make sure there is no problems with the engine but if it got a rod knock even with perfect compression that would be a deal breaker.... this video helps that....going to jack it up and then listen....I also happen to own a stethoscope cuz I bought it to listen for termites in walls so I can use that too

Great video. The screwdrivers perfectly represent those sounds, except I am still stumped. My mother has a 2016 Cadillac ATS 2.0 turbo. I have been cleaning up the car, doing some service work on it, and getting ready to sell. The car only has 67K miles on it, and suddenly, I have the loudest knock I have ever heard. Sitting inside with the windows up and the hood down and locked, it's so loud, like I had the windows down and the hood open. The tone is more like the sound of a rod, yet it sounds like it's coming from the topside. I haven't been underneath it yet, but it may not make much difference in determining where it's coming from because it's so loud. Damn, I need to get rid of this car like yesterday..Ugh!
