@@ronstevens6656 yes or youll be needing new heads 😂. The 2v 5.4 is the best engine on a ford but the 3v 5.4 is more scarier to have since you got some timing tensioner issues and spark plugs being stuck

+victor blackburn are you going to do it yourself? there are some really good videos on youtube on how to do it. I found a good one and watched it 4 times and took notes lol it took me all day but I got it done by myself. mine was an 01 expedition.

I also had the same problem I just bought a 2003 F250 with a 5.4 2 valve Triton engine and after three thousand miles it started running exactly the same way as the truck and I video and plus one of my spark plugs is a two-piece Spark plug. If the engine didn't have 75000 miles on it original I was going to take it back to him and get my money back for the the truck isn't too much of a good shape plus it has a 8 inch lift with 38 in 14 + 1/2 wide tires and rims

I currently have a problem similar to this its leaking coolant onntop of the engine near the coilovers and i thought it was oil then noticed my windshield was fogging up and check the carpet on passenger side and its soaking wet also loosing coolant

Now you get to replace transmissions when the cooler plugs up and causes it to overheat. Might as well plan on replacing all the trans lines and ps lines that always leak too. While you got tools out go ahead and replaced the front axle seals too. They have just as many problems with GM's as ford if not more

It's a purge line if it's the line that feed into the driver's side of the air box (common), or pcv hose & elbow that feeds from the passenger side valve cover & into the back of the throttle body. Those elbows love to rot & crack.

Is it a 4.3 if so research their problems with their fuel system. Fuel pump and spider injector system

@@hmbrew2754Fuel pump and spider injector are all new. Thought it was the problem at first. Fuel pump had poor pressure and leaking fuel pressure regulator. Replaced both with little improvement. Replaced the intake manifold gaskets. It helped a little and the front water jackets on the gasket was distorted badly. The main culprit ended up being a bad EGR valve. I blocked it off and it runs great now. 👍 Now just have to shell out the $$$ on a new one...

My truck was just doing the same thing a couple days ago, I have a 98 4.6 and it was even the same cylinder that would repeatedly misfire and even gave it the sea foam treatment too lol long story short some how the plug came loose and that was the culprit of the missfires

3 years later and i’m having the same problem, exhaust is thumping and shaking the car and i have a cylinder 3 misfire. 2001 mustang 4.6, changed plugs, coils and injectors and still misfiring and making that horrible noise. how did you fix it? was it the manifold ?

Also i have 1 question. We know the intake is obviously leaking. One symptom us it opens up real good to about 30 then just falls flat on its face and just will not open up unless I drop it into 2nd and shift manually from there. Would that be caused from the leaky intake?

My corolla was doing this today and I wasn’t sure if i blew my head gasket at 75k or if its my intake manifold. This vid saved me such a headache

I know this is an old question and hopefully you’ve found your answer by now lol. Figured I could help someone else in this same spot. I’ve got an 04 f250 5.4 which engine died at 400,000km. Just replaced it with a new fully reman (upgraded internals from factory) and all has been fine for 6 months / 6,000km roughly. Ran like new. Almost too quiet 😂. Now this. My intake manifold is new as of maybe 4 years ago, but some of the piping/tubing leading to it is cracked. With a new engine your literally getting the block. Intake manifold, all drive belt accessories, oil pan, etc etc anything attached to the block is reused when the new block is installed. Pulleys and all. So go through a regular troubleshooting process in the engine bay regardless if it’s a new block everything attached to it properly I’ll be original unless swapped recently or with the engine swap. So even if all internals in the block are brand new (hopefully a quality remanufactured not cheap rebuild) something wrong with one of the vacuum accessories will cause the engine to act up, as it’s controlled by the pressure to determine idle etc etc.

@@justinstevenson2061 I thought I'd reply, to also possibly help someone else. I did the same thing you are doing. Replaced all the hoses, and just about everything, and turns out (knock on wood so far), I'm about 99% sure I needed a new Alternator. One night, my battery light came on, so I thought the alternator had died, and rushed home, cause i thought I may have snapped the serpentine belt, and I knew, the battery will only get you so far without the alternator, but it was a failing alternator, which was still working a bit so I got it home. Since I've replaced the alternator, everything seems good. I never would have thought that was it with these symptoms. It may not apply here though.

The intake manifolds aren't cheap! My explorer neede one and it cost$400 brand new, then $30 for the gaskets, and if you replace the bolts like i should that cost another $52. Then if i pay a shop to do it cost around $300 because 2 bolts are hard to get to out of the total 8 bolts. One of the bolts was near the fire wall. I had to link my go-pro to my phone so i could see when my T-30 star bit was hitting the hole. If you strip the bolt head then all hell breaks loose and becomes a nightmare. The bolt was so tight it made the T-30 star bit twist like a pretzel, my intake was a fucking nightmare getting off. I had to use a 6" pipe wrench with a small cheater pipe to get another bolt out also. My rib cage muscles felt like they were torn when i was done, and i wrench for a living being a millwright.

Pull all of your coils and make sure theres no water in the plug wells (water can get in there over the years it doesnt have to be coolant) If your coil springs are dirty clean them If that doesnt fix it it could be that your spark plugs need to be replaced If not spark plugs its likely the fuel injector

Okay so assuming you haven’t already your gonna have to cut your wheel allllll the way to right and then start by taking out your wheel well liner and twisting yourself up like a pretzel between the wheel then look back towards the back of the manifold and you’ll see the bolt from the bottom 😅 just noticed this was 7 years ago but figured I’d share to you for any future references when working with 5.4L’s

Moises Miron typically when you got blue smoke you're burning oil at least that's been my experience. I have a 02 navigator 4 valve 5.4 I'm dealing with coolant in #8 cylinder and oil in #5. going to replace head gasket...and valve cover. might be something to check out

@@finncampeau4922 there were actually several changes between the 02 and 03 F-150s, including color options, cabin seals, and the addition of more threads for the spark plugs in the heads

You can tell by the body style and trim, that's it's an '02, because that was the last year of that style.

Yes I think if u just overhaul it and put it back in u only have to redo the upper part of engine head gasket and oil rings .and valve cover and make sure heads r not crack if they r not clean an polish up gud and and put it back together also change oil and spark plugs and intake gasket than she will purr like a kitten guarantee I've already done this on my expedition and she hum real gud.

+dante hardwick Yes, if it cracked at the rear or blew the gasket it is very possible.

Tim's Tech could you smell coolant because mine has similar symptoms and some smoke from tail pipe and coolant level drops. I rarely smell coolant just once in a blue and for a few seconds. I have the p0171 and p0174

Mine idle kinda crappy. Within a few hundres back n fourth. Recently sounds like its stalling at idle blowing air out wanting to die. Replace all sensors. This is my next step I believe. The dreadful intake plenum of dodge lol

Richard Cowtails no you do have an EGR system,. there should be a vacum line going into the EGR valve itself, before you remove the intake, just remove the vacum line while its running and then use your finger or a peice of cloth and cover the vacum line to stop the vacum suction, if the EGR is bad all the missfiring will stop,, try that first

in the 99 ram 5.9l gas, no egr. pvc the most like. theirs a a few tests, vacuum i need to perform until im sure enough to replace it.i get a misfire in cylinder 1 constantly off and on, rough idle bad mileage even for dodge lol flucuaing idle, sorts\a hesitation loss of power hissing when put on the gas. gas pressure is perfect, vacuum goes down when idling. replaced my iac, ips both o2's, cat and pipe, air filter,checked vacuum lines, plugs, cap and rotor many times.suspension all new. diff is fine.great compression in all cylinders well not great but 130 across the block. shopuld be at 160 or something. a bad intake would take all the cylinders down a peg though. HATE INTAKE WORK LOL sound anything like yours?

what are you trying to say?? My ford 98' f-250 LD 5.4L has almost 260 thousands miles. no engine swaps nor rebuilds same goes for the transmission BUILT FORD TOUGH!!!!!!!!!

98fordf250 I'm almost to 275,000 on my 1998 4.6l v8. It even survived the colorado floods a few years back (submerged up past the hood and drove out of it). I've had quite a few problems since then, but still same engine and same transmission. You couldn't ask for a better truck.

2000 F-150, 186,000+ miles. Rescued it 2 yrs ago, heavily abused and not maintained by previous owner. Only now does it need one.
