Useful guide, just changed the sensor on a 2004 Focus. After 18 years probably not surprising it was solid; but what a pig of a job. A couple of suggestions. Eventually shifted the pin by gripping with a pair of side cutter and levering against the gearbox . Could not pull the sensor out, eventually got it to turn slightly, by this time the plastic arm was long gone. So got an socket that fitted and hammered it down over the end of the sensor, 2 long extension bars on the socket then used an adapter to connect to an impact driver. Got it turning freely and then it pulled out easily with a pair of pliers. Not elegant, but it did the job and someone may find it useful.

Useful guide. Had to replace it on my 20 y/o Ford focus, and it took me a good 5 hours total. The damn pin just wouldn't come loose. I snapped off the plastic clip of the sensor to get more grip with my vice grip, but still no success. Ended up tapping the pin with a M4 thread and put on a nut. (had to weld a 13mm socket to the tap to even be able to reach it) I added a little weld to the end just to give some extra strength. Still took a lot of force, but I managed to pry it out with a tiny crowbar that barely fitted. A huge pain in the ass but with some brute force and patience you'll get it out

Trust me. It’s not as easy as it looks to pull the sensor out. I’ve been battling with mine for 3 days now. I’m starting to question if I really need a speedometer.

I have a 2002 Ford Focus SE Vin number "P" 5 speed manual. While driving on cruise, speedometer suddenly went down to zero, all digital displays blank. Immediately after 10 seconds, everything started normal, however the engine light came on. The code is PO720. The auto parts stores are not clear about which output speed sensor it uses. I am not a mechanic. Some say it is the straight one S41018, Others say it is the one with a 90 degrees twist SU8819, How do I know which sensor to buy and give it to the mechanic for replacement? Also, where is it located? Also, can it be responsible for the clutch fluid leakage? (There is just one compartment for brake/clutch fluid) I have replaced clutch slave cylinders leaking in the recent past.

Thanks for the vid, i accidently broke the tab on the pin due to it being too corroded as i was twisting and pulling on the tab it popped off lol i've had to break a bit of the plastic tab off to expose more of the pin to get it out with mole grips. Been trying for the past 3 hours with no success yet.

Great video but do not expect it to be this easy, the pin will be corroded and it took me 2 hours of wiggling from underneath the car with straight mole grips to get it out. The sensor was removed from above by placing ordinary mole grips around it and twisting. This is not a 5 minute job, I finally replaced the sensor but have not been able to replace the pin.

took me 3 days, gashed hands, snapped sensor. Eventually took to drilling it out...but gave up when oil came up while still drilling. The remains of the sensor are still in there....setting the car alight was also an option. Had to bung the whole full of putty and get top marks for an impossible job on the side of the road well bodged. Have to count telephone pole per second going past whilst driving. Will look for a car with a speedo.

Replacing this for my lass. I drive a 2003 Smart 450 and the sensor broke flush with the gearbox. Can or has this ever happed on the focus I’m not in the mind to open the gearbox.

I suppose it should be a similar process on a 2003 Ford Fusion? For the last three years my speedo has been randomly going to zero when ever it pleases. When it happens the odometer also just shows a bunch of lines (dashes) and the radio sounds a bit different. However, the rev counter stays constant. Last week the problem became more prevalent and this week the speedo seems to have completely packed up. So I’m guessing it’s the speed sensor or the wiring leading to the sensor.

hi guys I have changed my car speed sensor 2 months ago i got a used one it was working good but now only after 2 months it stop working sometime same like before I dnt know now what the problem again I dnt know it's possible sensor is not working or have other issues with the electric can anyone advice me plz wht to do now

wow, so great so smoothe, how long does this action lasts to do so, because here in Holland they charge 39.00 eur p/h, and when they are busy 3 hours is like 3x39.00 eur plus the prize of the sensor (maybe eur)...so i guess i have to do it myself...thx for uploading ...keep it up

this is the ABS wheel speed sensor?

He didn't show the sensor location and all he showed was a pair of pliars trying to pry the old one out and then plugging the wireing back on it. not talking clear almost like he was guessing which one was it.

Proper title would be nice... U didn't even put an engine size lol. Good bud tho
