THANKS FOR THE CLEAR AND AUDIBLE AUDIO WITHOUT ANY BACKGROUND NOISES SUCH AS RADIOS OR KIDS OR PETS! Best video I've seen so far. My 91 accord has the front counter balance shaft pointer at the 12 o'clock position and oil pump shaft at about the 4 o'clock position. Actually it was aligned with screwdriver into the back of the block. Thanks again!

5 years later your work is relevant to someone like myself. Wife's 02 accord towed home yesterday with coolant leak - I started watching videos and found your excellent description of HOW TO do the timing belt. I know that's next on the list. Thanks again

THANX A MILLION. I've never done this kinda job, but as well lit, and good as this video is, and attention to all detail, and independent explanation, a woman like me with no prior experience could quite possibly do it on my 2000 accord. I'm psyched. I now know why I've been having more frequent intermittent crank no start fails, water disappearing, and going through oil. The tails pipes been shivering not because of an exhaust leak, but because it's out of time

Not following the Honda service manual tensioning the belts properly, the springs are there to set the tension if you follow the service manual and do it properly. Also not correctly setting the rear balance shaft timing with an M6x100mm Bolt screwed in 74mm into the back of the block. Other than that its a very useful video

I can't seem to be able to lock the balance shaft at the right depth. I've spun it three times and tried to get something in during the whole process, I wasn't able to find it Right now I moved it back to TDC where it was. Car was running ok, but I find it odd I can't get the set up right. Any tips?

Clear video and good instructions. I'll be comparing it to the book, but I'm hoping to do it myself very soon. I had the timing belt and water pump done 10k miles ago, and have noticed a vibration in the engine over 2500 RPM. I'm assuming the tech didn't get the balance shafts lined up properly. I also have a leak somewhere behind the lower cover. Thanks for the great instructions.

At idle a bad pcv valve sticks open enough that vacuum is created in the engine and oil is pulled thru the pcv hose. These pcv valves by default are open, it's the vacuum on one side and pressure on the other side that makes them work. At higher rpms, and low manifold pressures that's when they open up and vent crankcase pressures. At idle they are not supposed to stay open. Also just because a pcv valve rattles does not mean it's good, it could still be bad. A cheap item to replace, so when in question just get a new one.

I agree with HondaSolutions. I've done timing belts on Honda's and never put the timing belt on that way. YOU go the other way first, that way you can turn cam gear to take slack. Then around waterp,tensionor. Put spring back on to take tension up, then push up on bottom half of tensioner to take up more tension. then tighten the bolt. all marks must line up. But good video.

On the 2000 Accord 2.3L, there are 2 balance shafts... The one in the rear (right side) turned by the oil pump gear is the one you insert the 6 x 100mm bolt to lock... Just nit picking, but he mentioned he was going to turn the engine over 5 or 6 times. It should be 2, 4, or 6 times to end up with your marks positioned correctly. FSM recommends to rotate twice (Crank rotates twice for the cams to rotate once).

Came here to say this. If you don't clock it correctly the motor will be out of balance. The dot on the sprocket face should be pointing to about 5 o'clock

Whats the point of locking it if the orientation marks are lined up?
@ollimakkonen6481
@ollimakkonen6481 6 жыл бұрын
The rear balance shaft is rarely correctly timed by just lining up the timing marks. The locking bolt is needed to correctly time the shaft. The 6 x 100 mm bolt, marked 74 mm from the end, can only be FULLY inserted into the shaft once every 3 revolutions. The other 2 revolutions of the shaft, it only goes in part of the way. The timing is correctly set when the bolt can be inserted all the way up to the 74 mm mark. Just how important this precise timing then is, is another matter. During my career I have come across quite a few shafts that were not correctly timed, yet the engine run reasonably smoothly.
@Ottonic6
@Ottonic6 4 жыл бұрын
@@ollimakkonen6481 Yes, you need to insert the bolt through the service hole on the right side of the engine, not the left... a 100mm bolt inserted 74mm to lock the inner gear. BriansMobile1 has a great video on this engine showing that exact procedure...

We drained the coolant out of the radiator, Once the coolant level gets down low enough, it doesn't drain out.
@gfriedman99

I don't see how that is possible. Both radiator hoses connect back to the engine at a level above the water pump. Did you drain it with the engine running so the pump forced water up and out??

@mailpup

There is a hole drilled into the shaft behind the sprocket. You insert a screwdriver or similar tool through it to immobilize the shaft while you use a socket to loosen the sprocket bolt.

No need for sealant on rubber seals for most cases. Generally adding gasket sealant is for corners where the rubber seal can't seal very well.

I have yet to see a video correctly tensioning the timing belt according to Honda Factory specs. This video did not explain how to do it correctly. You put the timing belt on, rotate the crank counterclockwise 2 turns make sure your marks line up and turn the crank counterclockwise 3 teeth and let the spring (which you didn’t put on) tension the belt. You also didn’t show how to correctly align the rear balancer shaft. I’m sure the engine won’t be balanced.

I agree, the balance belt also has to be timed from oil pump side and wasn't shown. Just had to have it today. All above will work except the oil pump positioning. First of all there is 1:3 ration between oil pump pulley and pump itself which need to be found by removing bolt on the side from behind the engine and insert 4-5 inch pin and find that one revolution out of three where pin dives in. Next, make sure the groove on a sprocket points to thin line on the pump case, it's about 5pm which is actually correctly pointed in video, but I guess by accident. Other then that I'd say all above will work ok, regardless it differs from honda SM. I'd say it even clearer then the book as it actually shown in action. But that's only my opinion...

What kind of a person shows replacemwnt of a timing belt, but does not know that what they call the oil pump pulley is actually a balancer shaft. And also says that that same balancer ahaft pulley has no specific orientation. You should take this video down. It's just misleading and wrong.
@ollimakkonen6481
@ollimakkonen6481 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, he did say that the rear (rightmost) balance shat pulley is timed and the orientation is at 5 o'clock. There is a casting on the engine block against which the pulley groove is required to be timed. Where he did go wrong, was that he had the front and rear balance shafts mixed up. The 6 x 100 millimeter locking bolt needs to be marked at 74 mm and is inserted into the maintenance hole, which can be accessed by removing the 8 mm bolt and washer that normally covers it. Incidentally, the bolt can only be fully inserted once every 3 pulley rotations, even though the timing marks are properly positioned on each rotation. This is extremely well demonstrated on the WILEY Motorsports video at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLdzha-Dsay0fYk.html. Slightly amateurish job, from the point of view of a technician with 50 years experience, but it does cover the important points and I'm sure many people will appreciate the guidance this video provides. Proper tensioning of the various bolts is important and lack of this is the main reason why the cover bolts break loose in the plastic housing.
