I am just a DIYer doing this strut change for the first time on my trusty Toyota Highlander. I know the pros may have a better way, but this is how I did it and the issues I ran into. I hope this helps you keep cost on maintaining your vehicle. Shop around for the best price on Rock Auto, Amazon, and other, as I found prices vary.

Thanks for the reply. I have a 2002 Highlander with 50,000 miles and the ride is super stiff with little give, but rather a very choppy hard ride.
@justbehandy

Wow, only 50,000 miles, don't know what could be causing the stiff ride if it has original equipment struts, could be age. Good luck and enjoy

Great video! We have had what I consider to be "blown out" struts on our 2005 Highlander for several months now. Both our local mechanic and the dealer don't seem to think that it is a big worry or concern. The biggest annoyance to me of the blown struts is the lack of support that the wheel has when the car is jacked up. With the loose struts, it is difficult to get the wheel far enough off the ground to change a tire. What are the main reasons to repair this problem? Thanks.
@justbehandy
@justbehandy 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my channel. The wheel may not fall off, but there are 2 main reasons to consider: handling and braking. When a strut can not maintain the proper damping of the spring, wheel contact with the ground takes longer. During swerve it will take longer for the vehicle to come back to center due to reduced spring damping. Likewise while braking, and hitting a pot hole, it will take longer for that wheel to dampen out the frequency induced in the spring and will bounce longer; therefore taking longer to come to a stop. Google "Issues Worn Struts" for more detail. Blessings, Mike at Just be Handy

 @Just Be Handy will i need a wheel alignment right after? I have heard of marking your original strust placement where it attached to the frame on top but.... you did not do this here and several other youtubers have not for this particular vehicle. Any tips on this issue or advice for keeping it close and possibly not having an alignment after??? is this important?? Thanks Mike.
@justbehandy
@justbehandy 2 жыл бұрын
In most cases with the Highlander you will not need an alignment. However it would not hurt to have the alignment checked after you put on new struts. The new struts may have a slight hight difference.

Did you make sure all bolts were torqued properly? Sometimes it's worth it to go over everything one more time. Be sure to check the sway bar links.

Hello Ken, yes the assembly comes with full instructions and torque specs. I also looked up the state Library system as they usually offer online automotive manuals as well. In WI, you have to be a resident but you can use this link. badgerlink.dpi.wi.gov/resources

Thank you. I have around 30,000 miles on them and they are holding up nicely. They were the best quick struts available at the time. As stated in the video I would have used KYB if available. Swapping out the struts and bearings and all the other hardware would have been 3x the cost and out of my budget.
