2002 Toyota Echo
Great First Car - Lovely little car, great gas mileage, perfect first car! Handles really well, and great in the snow. I rarely get stuck. High enough off the ground so you don't bottom out often. Seating is comfortable. One dislike is that there is no RPM meter so you have to base shifting on how the engine sounds. Easy to drive.
Pros: Great in the snow, never get stuck
Spacious back seat
Shifts smoothly
Great gas mileage (approx. 40MPG)
Cons: Low HP, takes a lot to speed up

Love This Car. - This car handles very well on the road and I have always felt safe driving this car. Durable and trustworthy and toyotas seem to lat forever. Would highly recommend this car to any one looking for smaller car. Also very fun to drive.
Family transportation
Great gas mileage. Very comfortable and you sit high where most smaller cars you sit low. Very roomy for a small car. Repair costs no more than any other car I have owned. Large trunk.
Cons: No power windows .

Dude, great video and car looks to be clean and in excellent shape. I've had my 2004 Echo for 13 years and I hate it cause its so uncool, but I love it to death cause it's cheap on gas, nearly no repairs and I haven't had a car payment SINCE FOREVER.

Bought my 2000 Echo new... still own it. Have 120,000 + miles on it, but it's taken 18 years to wear out front end bushings and a rear shock. Almost time to replace motor mounts. A bit expensive, having all these bits "die" at the same time, but, once all fixed, good for another 18 years, right? Turn the key, and it goes. Best car I've every owned.

This is what cars are supposed to be about. Point A to B decently. As little as you can spend on a car the better. Good score. A friend of mine had someone abandon a Mid 2000's pickup on his property and after two years he finally decided to try and acquire it. He was forced to do an auction and nobody came to bid on it so he managed to aquire for around $500 in back due fees and another $500 in tires. A new battery, plugs wires, etc and in total he's spent less than $1500 on it. It's a 4 wheel drive v6 so I consider that a good score. Only thing wrong was passenger side door had a good size ding in it, but he's got a replacement door from the wrecking yard, same color just needs to swap it out. That was only $25.

Toyota Echo is a great car! I have a 2005 Toyota Echo Hatchback (Canada Only) manual transmission, bought it back in 2010 at 70,000 km (43,000 miles) on it. I now have nearly 200,000 km or (125,000 miles) and the engine, also transmission is running like new, I've been using synthetic oil over the last 5 years and there isn't a single drop of oil leaking or burning. There’s not enough to be said about the maneuverability of these cars. You can usually work your way around any construction zone, or a small turning area. They’re not lookers, that’s for sure, but they will get you to work and the store and back. Also, they are great for small parking spaces, and you can park where a lot of big cars can’t. If you’re wondering about headspace, there’s plenty, more than you would think. And gas mileage can’t be beat. They’re not luxurious, and the ride can be a bit bumpy, but they were built to run and run, with minimal maintenance.

I put one of those balls on my steering wheel on the lower left. With the rack and pinion you barely move your hand. Also I put one of those extra wide curved mirrors on it. It clamps over and Amazon has them for around 10. Worth every penny. Take care. Craig from Alabama

I was also given an Echo for free from a family member mine had a bit of a rough past I got the car from my aunt who neglected it she told me everything was good to go on the car turns out that wasn’t true within 5 months of my ownership I had to invest in new spark plugs and coil plugs even the serpentine belt and I’m still not done with the car the car was given to me with 84,000 miles I now put almost 92,000 miles on it and I am going on three years of my ownership. I love the car but it hasn’t been well taken care of and I’ve been working on it constantly I even had to put a new mass airflow sensor on it because the old one was bad never replaced. I mean my echo hasn’t missed a beat since I’ve been investing in new parts and installing them but the car has been good to me overall. A part of me wants to keep it but at the same time I should let it go because a Toyota shouldn’t give me problems like I had until I started sinking thousands into it.

Mine is 2003, and I am the first and only (and probably the last) owner. The first time it gave me a problem was last year May, at the young age of 19 :-) when it broke down and the alternator had to be changed. My fault, the battery light kept coming on (and off) for about 5 weeks! I went to one of the stores to check if there was any code but there was none. I planned to take it to the service but it was late. My Echo passed the inspection every year (20 times by now, and I am planning to keep it as long as it lasts. I am in the market for the new Toyota (Corolla Hybrid probably), but this will be my back-up car.

Killer part not only is it free (minus plates) it only has 21000 miles on it! My current car is an Audi A4 with 200k it has electrical issues and battery dies almost every time I go to use it. (Bad alternator as well I think). Plan to drive this while repairing my Audi. Looks like it will be a very nice car and will be essentially brand new which is awesome for a 26 year old I'll have that thing into my 40s I reckon.

Here in in Britain, I have been running the hatchback version of this known as the Yaris or in Japan as the vitz. For the last 2 years of ownership it's been a peach, mine is a Base version with no power locks or windows, no A/C but at least it has ABS and power steering. Also living not far from London which has low emissions zone (ulez) it's ulez compliant. My Yaris is only a 1.0 16 valve engine with vvti, but fuel economy is fantastic and it will take 3 hours on the freeway at 70mph with no issues. All this for £600.

Last year I got a 2000 Echo 5-speed with 71,300 miles!! I paid half of what you paid for a car with half the mileage & I got the 5-speed manual. (I think the automatic is scary for its lack of initial acceleration whereas you can keep a manual in gear up to the redline, if you knew what redline was.) The people had just parked it & it had 400 miles on it in the last 10 years per the oil change sticker. It cost me $700 including tax title & license. I work at a job where I overheard them saying they were going to give the little car to some charity, so I butted in. I gave them $600 for the troubles. It had a chargeable battery which died soon thereafter. I got a new cheap 1 yr Walmart battery, new wipers, engine air filter & cabin air filter. I used Chevron Techron fuel injection cleaner the first chance I could with my first full tank of gas. It passed state vehicle inspection. I've only put 3,700 miles on it in the 1.5 years. I just did synthetic engine oil with an upgraded Fram oil filter, synthetic gearbox oil & I'm getting ready to replace the front pads with Ceramics & bleed It with synthetic brake fluid. I installed 2 new fan belts. & I will do 4 new spark plugs soon (& the coolant & radiator hoses in the spring as it tests ok now). I bought 4 used tires that are 185/65 cuz I couldn't find the right size. The hubcaps were all brittle & broke apart, so I bought replica ones for about $60 that I haven't mounted yet . The EPA on it is 41 / 34. I've never gotten less than 35mpg & it's almost all City mileage, but no traffic jams to speak of. I wonder what it MPG it will get on a long trip with all the synthetic lubricants now; I bet it will approach 45 mpg. This car actually has a slightly better repair record that the Camry! I have a 2000 & even though it's the first year, it is almost flawless. You say it's discontinued, but the Yaris is basically the same vehicle (with the same engine?). It's got a 1.5 Liter as does your Honda Fit. Prior to the Echo there was a 1.5 Liter in the Paseo & the first Scion XB cute little Boxy Thing that was so quirky also had a 1.5 Liter & got extraordinary mileage for a something that was almost small van size (you could get a 5 spd manual). Anyway if you look on autolist for Echos, most have at least 175,000 miles & a nice price, so they hold their value. I'm going to enjoy this car. It's not really my beater; I'm going to hold on to it for a long time & may not buy a second car. The clearcoat paint job is frazzled, a factory silver paint flaw (or from being parked 9 years in the Louisiana sun), so that's 1 less thing to worry about & it only has 2 small dents by the LF fender well. It's "ugly," but extraordinary! I wish it had cruise control & I think I would still like power mirrors & power windows, although I'm tall enough where I can reach over & crank the window without much difficulty, & it's too bad the little real windows are fixed. I wish they were pop out (or motorized). Unfortunately a long trip without cruise control might put your right leg to sleep. Enjoy!!

I want an Echo. I am a learning driver and will have to share a car with my brother. I have money saved up but still want a inexpensive car so I have money left over for insurance, maintenance, etc. I like Toyota's for their reliability. The car I drive now is my mom's old 2001 Toyota Rav4. I like to drive that since it is smaller and I feel better getting around cars parked on the side of the road. I also don't have to worry about it getting dented up because it already has a few dents in it.. That being said, I don't want to get any dents in it but it is okay if that happens. But anyway, great video!

Have owned three of them, 2000 & two 2005's. It's noticeable, you are definitely aware of strong cross-winds, but it's entirely manageable. It does get " interesting " when you tuck in too close behind a tractor- trailer at Hwy. speed. As the Echo is quite tall, the vortices off the trailer, will buffet the top of the car, in a very noticeable way. This buffeting will stop as you allow more seperation. Shorter answer is no, not bad at all!
