Finish of race segment one including great use of the brains from Jeff Burton and his crew.
In segment one all cars must make a mandatory four tire pit stop during race before crossing finish line. Jeff Burton and his crew strategize and exploited a loophole in the pit rules.

It's like when they tried to penalize Dale Jarrett for having an engine with the compression above 14. His was 14.2 (I think) and he argued that the rule said 14 not 14.0 so technically he was within the 14 rule. They added the .0 to the rule afterwards.

Michael Schumacher won the British Grand Prix in 1998 by doing exactly this; took a stop & go penalty on the final lap, his pit was after the start finish line and it was deemed legal.

And FIA immediately changed THAT rule too
@Aunini
@Aunini 9 жыл бұрын
The rule itself stayed the same, the penalty itself was screwed up because the rule hadn't been adhered to; the stop-go penalty was wrong as it was delivered after 31 minutes when the time limit is 25 minutes, the after the race time penalty was also wrong as the incident hadn't occurred within the final 12 laps of the race - they had to rescind the penalty altogether. It didn't help either that by giving it to him with 2 laps to go, they opened the door to this possibility
@DoubleWavedYellows
@DoubleWavedYellows 9 жыл бұрын
Aunini He should have been disqualified though - because he went out of the pit lane after "taking" his penalty, and then did another full lap, before come into the pit lane and parc ferme, thereby crossing the finish line twice after the chequered flag was shown which you aren't allowed to do. The Clerk of the Course at the British GP in '98 lost his FIA License as a result of this monumental balls-up!

The penalty was bogus, as mentioned above, so all points are moot. Great thing about it all is Ferrari would not have won it had they pitted earlier, bogus or not. FIA are still no better today, handing out mid race stop and gos, robs the fans, who they apparently don't give a fuck about.

Okay basically the rules are “you have to go through the pit stop before you cross the checkered flag” the thing is, is that he waited to go through the pit stop up until his last lap. What makes it crazy is that his pit stop was 50 yards behind the checkered flag/ finish line. So technically, according to the rules, he did take his pit stop before crossing the checkered flag/line. All while at 45MPH, and 50 yards to go I believe. This strategy was never done up until then. (Correct me if im wrong. Idk much about Nascar)

Jeff Burton was one of the smartest racers in history. I can't tell you how many races he won by pit strategy, knowing when the rain was coming to stay out when others didn't, saving his equipment and so on. Burton was very good from '98-2004. He's also one of the few broadcasters I can stand listening to.

For those unaware of what happened, here’s the rundown. In the Winston, commonly referred to now as the All Star Race, required you to pit for four tires once during the segment. Pit strategy can ruin your day if you don’t play your cards well. He pitted on the final lap so he wouldn’t have to go far to finish the segment, and also so that he wasn’t snookered by pit strategy. Truly a huge loophole he exploited well.

For those of you who dont nascar like me: Pit stop is right before finish line. You are required to go through it before end of race. Everybody else did it earlier. It results in 24 second loss in this case. One driver did it at the very end of the last lap. He would not be able back up to speed before crossing, finish was too close. This skips all that time everybody else had to waste getting back up to full speed.

Kinda not fair in a way for those who had certain pit selections, but it was brilliant thinking on Stoddard's part. @@cosmicbro1973 you people are so cringey. Y'all honestly think that you could do this don't you? It's not "genius" in the sense of it requiring intellectual power, rather it's a "sneaky move" that was at the perfect moment. Think of how a boxer may pull off a rebound and KO strike, on the spot. These guys are cornering around 200mph. It's not even close to as simple as you make it. All of this is from a guy who admittedly hasn't watched a NASCAR race in around 10 years. It's just not the same. I never cared for US football but It would be very ignorant to say in a sarcastic manner "oh wow dude throws the ball and runs across the field big deal" or "OMG I can't believe he threw the ball to one guy but another guy on the other team caught it!" This sport is a very passionate thing to the people of the south since we are often mocked ridiculed and treated like we are second class Americans. NASCAR is built into the modern southern culture.

@@cosmicbro1973 cool antidotes you have there. Too bad you're wrong, out of the entire earth the south east USA has the most NASCAR viewers every year. And I dont know how old you are but NASCAR IS apart of southern culture, it was formed in the south east usa, it's most famous drivers was from the south east or Midwest. You are just flat out wrong there buddy. Yes the viewership of NASCAR has drastically declined each year since the early 2000s. Yes, most fans are the older generation. But all of this is besides the point. The black 3 baseball cap or jacket Is nearly synonymous with the south. Just because you dont know many NASCAR fans doesnt mean it's representative of all of the usa. If you don't believe me I can pull up countless links to back this up with insane statistics of which regions buy the most tickets/tune in on tv. Also a sizable portion of Mexican-americans like NASCAR alot too, but no where near the number of white southern Americans.

I don’t understand what happen? Was he far behind and took a short cut or did he gain ground on others while everyone pitted earlier and he pitted in the last lap and crossed the line on pit lane?

Everyone else had already been in for service and he hadn't been, so his lead was 100% because of that. Like he said, if the clutch wasn't failing he had the speed to win that heat that day. I dont recall what became of the race itself though

I called this as it was happening. Ferrari had done something similar a few years earlier when Schumacher had to serve a penalty. He crossed the finish line on pit road.

Yes it does. He has to pit, but his pit is before the start finish line. So, he only has to coast across. If he took his pit earlier, he wouldn't have his track position. This stop halves the amount of time he needs to be in the pits.
