i been chasing an intermittance no start on my 2003 mazda mpv for about 5 years on and off. i finally was able to find the problem and im so excited because this became a mission to find this problem. turns out the ignition switch was bad. i replace 3 starters and 2 batteries chasing this problem. i had 2 automotive techs try to fix this problem and failed.

You probably just saved me about $500. I wanted to change the starter but it just wasn't sitting right with me. That makes SO much sense! Will let you know as soon as the part comes in

Ignition feed gets stuck closed. Continuing to engage solenoid = hot hot hot Definitely a great diagnose.

Thank you so much! We were about to replace the starter when I found your video. Did the test you recommended and it was just the ignition switch. Cheaper & easier fix.

Thank you very much mine did the same it would start sometime sometimes wouldn't start and I replace the starter because it sounds pretty weak to me and the battery was still good so now it's going to be the ignition switch thank you very much God bless you

I’m trying to do this on the 2002 Mazda Tribute and I do not see anything online about the switch just the tumbler. Autozone sells it for my car but there are no videos on how to do this.

I have a 2003 MPV which won't start every several weeks. When it happens, it has a loud spinning noise that looks like the starter is rotating but it is not fully engaged to the engine. Would like to know in you case if there was any spinning noise from the starter? Thanks for your time

Hello bohe. It sounds like what I experienced. I wish I would have caught it on video. But what I think is the ignition switch is staying (failuring)on allowing the starter to stay in gauge. Grab a test meter and put the black lead on the battery ground and the red test lead on the starter solenoid s terminal and see if the power is constant when you release the ignition switch. If so then u need an ignition switch. Rockauto has them for $50.00. It sound like the ignition switch is bad. My ignition switch started intermittently doing what u said then it started doing it all the time. Look at my other mpv videos. I talk about this. Good luck.

@@redbread9588 Thanks Randy. When it happened to my MPV with the spinning noise, the engine WAS NOT STARTED RUNNING at all. Then I pulled the key out, wait some more time, and try start my MPV again. After one or more tries, there was no noise and engine could be started and running. Would like to double check, in your case, was the engine started running when you heard the noise?

@@bohehebo8213 yes my engine was running when I heard the noise. In my case. The actual noise was the starter motor staying engage due to the ignition switch supplying anywhere from 5-12 volts constantly after the van started running. The constant voltage was keeping the starter motor engage and hitting the flywheel. Some time the van wouldn't even crank as if I had a bad starter.

@@redbread9588 I'm so confused because in this comment you said to put the black lead of the meter on the battery ground and the red lead of the meter on the solenoid terminal... But in the video at about the 6-minute mark you say to put the positive lead of the test meter to the negative battery and negative lead or black lead of the test meter to the solenoid terminal... Which way is it?

The part you show doesn't look like its the actual switch in the steering column. Is this switch located under the hood?

Good Question. I have a 2001 MPV that has intermittent start problems since a few months back. But I was able to put it in neutral when it wouldn’t start in park and it would start in neutral when it wasn’t starting in park. And now, my park, reverse, neutral and drive gear indicator lights are starting to short out on the dash. Lol! Now when I put in park I hear sizzling in the front Dash around the steering column! (Aka Solenoid)”Meaning it’s obviously getting very hot obviously! I shut the vehicle off immediately. I’m at the point where I’ve pushed it so long that I could literally break down somewhere anywhere. Lol. This video was some great insight! 👏

As I did some more research A Neutral safety switch sounds more like my vehicles problem… But now I may need a solenoid and ignition switch, transmission, tuneup, battery, shocks struts and tires, ball joints, brake job, front end alignment, oil change, and AC, all power window actuators replaced, front headlights, and a whole new vehicle too. for neglecting it for so long …

Anybody had an issue with the could losing ignition signal after the first revolution? Spins over, wants to start on first hit, no ignition signal after that.

I have a 2002 mpv lx and she turns over and won't crank diagnostic said camshaft sensor and replaced that. I put in coil packs and plugs and she still won't start

I've got a 2003 with no spark. The fuel pump ain't kicking in either. Replaced the crankshaft sensor and cam shaft sensor neither fixed the problem. I'm stumped at this point. Brand new battery and fuel pump also.
