I have a 03 montero with around 77k miles. Didn't know much about it but now I'm in love with it even more knowing it is very reliable and plus very comfy and the tint is nice. Bought mine off an auction with just some miner fender damage. Although It didn't come with third row seats plus one second row seat, if anyone can sell me some I would gladly buy as they are not very common around the PNW area. This thing is a beast‼️😼

I'm considering purchasing a 2006 Limited that looks pristine. After you modded yours out are you able to keep up with more go to off road rigs like Jeep Wranglers? The poor aftermarket support sucks but I'm glad to see a locker is available and the Old Man Emu lift looks nice too.
@zippycar2020
@zippycar2020 6 жыл бұрын
Aftermarket support is not the best you're right about it, nevertheless it is possible to find some good quality parts mostly from Australia, like EMU or Bushskinz. After upgrades Monty definitely became a much better off road vehicle, however it gets nowhere close to Jeep's rock climbing capabilities. It is a great expedition vehicle for long overlanding adventures. Installation of snorkel is coming soon...

I am planning to buy a Montero Sport 2003 now in 2020. Is it safe to buy such an old vehicle now? How is reliability? In my country land cruisers are damn expensive and the only choices for me are RAV4 2002 and Montero Sport 2003. I love the RAV4 but Montero Sport has the better ground clearance and 7 seats. I have no doubts about the RAV4's reliability. But I am unaware of Montero Sports. Please help me with your opinion.

Yes not as daily, but road trips or when my other car is down for maintenance. 179k now. $3500 I think is good, they're not as expensive compared to any other suv in it's class.

Monty on this video is fully stock. However we recently installed OME 2" lift kit (shocks ARB60033, struts ARB90007, springs ARB2915 front and ARB2918 rear). Tires were also upgraded to Hankook Dynapro ATM 285/75 R16. Didn't have a chance to test drive it off-road yet, but it's coming soon though...

Zippy car how was MPG of your montero after the modification and the hankook dyna pro?
@zippycar2020
@zippycar2020 7 жыл бұрын
On our last trip we drove almost 1900 miles and averaged 16 mpg including highway in 2wd and unpaved trails in 4wd. Car was loaded with camping gear, tools and two mountain bikes on a rack. Driving on highway only with 2wd usually leads to 18 mpg. We recently installed K&N air filter, but hard to tell now if there is any difference mpg wise, just need to put more miles to see the results. But definitely feels like it gained a few horses.
@reggiereyes2989
@reggiereyes2989 7 жыл бұрын
Zippy Car wow it's not that bad considering all that you guys were carrying. how many miles do you have in your montero? Are they pretty reliable?It feels a little torquey with a k&n filter huh? But yeah I'm thinking about getting a Monty in the future. By the way great videos I'm looking forward to see more adventures with your Monty. Thanks for your reply
@zippycar2020

Monty currently has 188000 miles on it and runs great. It is reliable, just make sure all the fluids are up to date. Not the easiest car to work on, but you can definitely tell that it was build to last by just looking at how it was designed mechanically wise. It is a perfect expedition vehicle, with a comfortable independent suspension that performs outstanding on and off road. It is a little hard to find, but should be definitely considered as alternative to Toyota and Nissan vehicles. Thank you for watching!

How do these compare to the 3rd generation 4 Runners?? Off road wise.
@zippycar2020
@zippycar2020 7 жыл бұрын
Pajero/Montero is definitely much more comfortable off road and of course on road thanks to its all around independent suspension, it can probably take a little less beating than a more "traditional" suspension on 4Runner. Toyota has a higher ground clearance 9.8 inches against 9.3 inches, but looses in approach angle by the whooping 10 degrees (Monty approach angle 42 vs Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD 32 (Limited edition has a better approach angle though 36 degrees). Angle of departure for Mitsubishi is 24 vs 26 (29 Limited) for Toyota. Pajero/Montero is 800lbs heavier, however weight/power ratio is about the same 21.9 lbs per 1 hp on Monty and 21.4 lbs per 1 hp on 4Runner. Mitsubishi has a more technologically advanced and superior 4wd system when equipped with Super Select 4WD system (IMHO). You may not like it if you are a professional off roader and like to have everything under your own control. Don't forget that Monty was build as direct competitor to Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (even though 4Runner shares the same chasis with Prado it is at least 2 steps below than it's older brother). This all happened before Mitsubishi had a big financial crisis in the early 2000s , so they invested a lot of knowledge, sources and money to bit Toyota. Some designs and ideas Mitsubishi engineers used in Pajero/Monty were revolutionary at that time. Let's not forget multiple victories in Paris Dakar Rally an extreme test for any off road vehicle (of course rally pajero has very little in common with stock pajero, but the experience gained in such competitions is used to create new gen pajeros.) Bottom line. I would probably pick a 4Runner for a very short rock climbing trip. But for longer, interstate trips through parks and forgotten trails with lots of mud, snow and little rocks I will pick Monty hands down (wanna do Trans American Trail on my Monty one day). Another decision factor is price, 4Runner is at least 2 times more expensive than Monty. Thank you.

do you think I should buy one with 190k miles. looks to be in good condition
@zippycar2020
@zippycar2020 6 жыл бұрын
I don't see the reason why you shouldn't. Mine is almost 190K and runs like a champ. Of course it needs some work to be done here and there sometimes, but most of it is maintenance. Make sure 4WD system works, ask the seller when timing belt is due and test drive to check transmission. Don't expect it to be 100% worry free, it will need some work no matter what it is a used car with 190k after all, but if the price is right it is worth it. Just check those three components mentioned above really well. Thanks for watching!!!

@zippycar2020

It is probably you not used to it. Mitsubishi Pajero ( Montero in North America ) was made as direct competitor to Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (in US it is Lexus GX) since Lexus is a luxury Toyota pretty much it has to have higher quality interior including better sound deadening.

Hey I am just seeing a 2003 Xle trim for sale, it has a check engine light on, and some fluid is leaking. I am not sure if you have similar problem with your Limited version?
@zippycar2020
@zippycar2020 6 жыл бұрын
Hook up a scanner and check the engine light codes. It can be something simple or not. There was a check engine light when we bought Montero. System too lean code mostly due too exhaust leak (cracked exhaust manifold). Got it fixed, so far so good. Be more specific with fluid leaks. Motor oil, power steering fluid? And how bad is it? We had some minor leaks at the time of purchase as well, nothing serious, got em all fixed already.

Do you need premium gas for this truck
@zippycar2020

This is what service manual states: "Your car is designed to operate on unleaded gasoline having a minimum octane rating of 87 [(MON + RON)/2], or 91 RON. Premium fuel is recommended". I personally put 91 Premium in it. I hope this answers your question.
