Thanks so much, I just completed my 8 check balls installation in about 3 hours with no lift. Yep one of them was smaller than the others and one had split into three pices. I was lucky to find all the small pieces, Your video made the job easy and cheap with the biggest expense being the fluid.. The transmission now shifts like new, with more power to the wheels. Past symptons were fast shifting along with 1st and 2nd gears trying to engage at the same time. Thanks again and glad it is fixed!

I always switch out the metal check balls, used in the GM Trans such as the 4L60/65/70E, with Sonnax Torlon Check Balls. They are some type of plastic that is very strong. Problem with the metal check balls is they pound the separator plate and embed themselves into the plate causing the clutches to burn, or not shift. I also like to use TransGo Hardened Separator Plates whenever possible. Much stronger plate, as well as modified holes for better shifting for longevity.

This just confirmed my problem with my 2004 F-150 with the 5.4 Triton. She's got 276,000 miles and had the transmission valve body replaced about two years ago by a local shop that's been around for many years. It just started the very low idle at a stop, but comes back to normal idle if I put it in Neutral. Time to give that shop a call... Thank you FordTechMakuloco!

Absolutely priceless. Really. It is an easy fix, but I never would have contemplated it without your clear demonstration here (and your other 4th gear video involving the valve body). I just did this to my 2007 f150. My #7 ball was split and lodged in the plate. I had the 'sense' to check the overdrive accumulator snap ring, which had both ears...(but, I actually know that now) I checked out some other videos and put some sonnax upgades, a new plate and gaskets. (the 'since you're in here' effect) And, of course, you're right about the thing driving like new. I'm blown away and feel like a genius. I spent maybe three hundred for everything - including fluid/filter. Thanks so much! You have no idea. effin' sweet dude...

I fixed my 2008 F150 XLT (140k) yesterday, new wheel bearings, new brakes and rotors, the transmission check balls and flushed fluid new gaskets and filter. Hi - Was your servo snap ring broken when you took the transmission valve cover off? If so, how did you put the servo back in as FordTech uses a special tool to put it back in (a different video). Did putting in the new transmission balls fix the shifting issues? My 2008F150 has a difficult time going into 1st gear and also the OD light flashes and Trans Fault light comes on every time I drive. Thanks

@DriftingFlyFisherman
@DriftingFlyFisherman 4 жыл бұрын
safarila1 mine was not broken but I did replace the ring for good measure. I use a jack to keep the servo in place so I didn’t replace it. I was lucky everything was very clean almost no metal dust on the magnet and the fluids looks awesome for not being flushed ever I’m pretty sure. The manufacturers plug was still in the pan. I did however replace all the check balls and they where due. It was like night and day once I got out on the open highway very smooth and lots of power.

Steel checkballs have the tendency to dig in to the separator plate. I have seen it many many times in different trannys. A plastic or composite ball do not do that and it is also lighter and can move/seal quicker than steel. Rubber seal great but obviously vear. I vould stick to plastic or rubber anyway

FordTechMakuloco I have a '14 F-150 5.0 4x4 that has a similar problem. It has 59k miles, barely within powertrain warranty, so I took it to my local dealer in June. They had my truck for 7 weeks, they overhauled the trans with new planetaries, clutches, valve body, and torque converter and they put in a new transfer case as well. When I got my truck back, I drove off the lot, around the block, and back into the service department because the problem was still there. Their response was to wait 1500 miles for the adaptive learning to take effect. The problem is the 2-3 upshift during any rate of acceleration, right after the upshift the engine tone drastically changes, like it is lugging very hard then immediately shifts to 4th, completely knocking the engine out of its power band. Initially I thought a clutch pack went bad but could it have to do with the engine's variable valve timing? Accelerating to highway speed takes twice as long now.

My F150 pulls really well and then falls on its face in 2nd gear. I wonder if this is my problem? I'll have to check this and see if it helps. Thanks again Brian. BTW, I already had to replace the snap ring that broke and caused me to lose overdrive. Very common problem on these trucks. A $2 snap ring has caused a lot of people to pay a lot of money for an unnecessary rebuild.

Hello. Thanks a lot for your very useful videos. I recently bought a 2008 F-150 STX 4x4, 4.6 engine, transmission code Q (4R75E I think). It shifts weird, like no clear difference between gears. Truck has 120k miles, very well taken care off. I was thinking about changing all the fluid and the filter when I stumbled with this video. Question: How difficult is this to do with the transmission on the truck? I rebuilt a few engines and manual transmissions, but never took apart an automatic one (replaced fluid and filters on several though). Thanks again!

Great video. Can you tell me why the flow from tranny to a cooler is so weak? I have the same tranny on my e350 and I performed a flow test directly from tranny to an empty bottle. So I got one quart in 2 minutes which is bad sign. But it shifts like it should and there is no codes or issues except high working temp. Thanks.

I appreciate your video. my 2010 4.6 F150xl is like your video. It only stalls out when you put it in 2nd gear and a oil can comes on the dash It drives and runs great except the wrench light comes on as soon as you hit second gear. know any good mechanics in NC? Thanks so much

Lot of the overhaul kits come with new check balls for the valve body so if he is Good tech in trans overhauling he should be replacing the check balls anyhow

True but if the valve body is for a servo issue then you still want to check them

I'm planning on doing the check ball replacement this summer. I have this problem where the transmission sometimes won't disengage while braking. It powers the truck forward and I have to cut the engine before I have an accident. Any idea what that might be?

What if I didn't find any broken snap ring or worn out looking balls? I was really hoping to find a worn out ball! My issue was a low power issue in low gears as well. Thanks!

Yeah I have a 04 2v f150 4.6. Just lost 3rd, 4th and overdrive. But it has 250,000 on original Tran parts so I’m hoping it’s just snap rings or check valve. Any advice would be great . Thanks for video

Thanks for the video. Could you advise me, i am frustrated. My 4r75e on 2006 e350 van has weak volume in cooler lines so transmission overheats extremely fast. Fluid is not coming fast directly out ports. I put new lines, got new filter, new fluid and even a cooler. But still no success. One quart test showed that fluid fills the bottle in 5 minutes not 30-40 seconds. And after all transmission shifts great in all gears. All inwant to know is what happened to a pressure in cooler lines. Thanks in advance!
