He had no kick. The hot competition ran the first 200 meters in 24.40 which means their legs must turn to mush in the last 100 meters. The leaders came back to Valery in the home straight.

I think Kipketer still remains the best ever 800m runner the world has seen. The most 1:41and 1:42 times, consistent and very unfortunate with illness and injury over the years. He deserved at least one Olympic gold.

@Charleybones5 жыл бұрын
@@jeremyschlichting823 By Far Zottle. Wottle was so far behind at the end of the first 400m that the announcers were wondering if he was hurt. Waddle didn't even catch the back of the pack until 500m had been run. And he didn't catch the leader until the last meter of the race. This is a great race by the Russian, but it doesn't even come close to comparing with what Wottle did in Munich in 72. And Wottle won graciously without any big fanfare - no collapsing at the end of the race, no covering his hands with his face and getting all misty. No running around the track yelling #1 and posing for pic's with a flag. Wottle was one cool dude...

I recommend doing a lot of negative split interval workouts such as 6 800's starting at a somewhat challenging pace such as 2:35 and dropping 5 seconds every 2 800's. So the first two would be 2:30, the next 2 would be 2:25 and so on. Do your last 800 all out. I'm a 400 runner but I do a very similar interval workout and i've gone from a 53.8 to 52.0

@holdencaufield20014 жыл бұрын
If you are a young kid or novice reading this, the best way to run the 800 is with an even pace. If you run it in 2:00 minutes don't pass the quarter mile in 55 seconds or less. an even pace will have you flying by guys in the final 200 yards. If you don't believe me just look at dave wottle's run in the 1972 olympic finals. It doesn't look like it but he actually ran an even pace.

@Chocosizzles In 400m the most popular strategy is the "four P's strategy" Go out hard for the first 100m (push), relax but try maintaining that speed on the back stretch (pace), put more effort around the second bend (position), and give everything you have for the home straight (pray). Michael Johnson used that exact strategy and his 100m splits in his 43.18 400m WR were 11.1, 10.12, 10.44, and 11.52, THATS a sprint.

@Chocosizzles Thats true, It's impossible to sprint 400m full out but the overall pace of a 400m is a sprint, thats what I meant. 800m runners that are also sprinters doesn't mean anything, there are many 400m/800m doublists that doesn't make 800m a sprint just like it doesn't make 400m middle distance..
