2004 Subaru Outback H6 3.0 Transmission oil and filter change

tools needed:
Rachet and 17mm socket
oil filter wrench for Subaru Transmission oil filter or channel locks (be very careful not to damage filter when removing old one.)
dexron iii trans oil
long narrow funnel
it takes 4 qts
here I show you how to change the transmission fluid and the transmission oil filter. time should take about 1 hour to 1 hour and a half.

This video saved me a lot of work. The manual for the 2.5 litre had no mention of an external oil filter.

I can’t believe I actually did it I was so scared I was gonna mess my car up there exactly as you say it worked cars with a smooth hopefully I can get another 120 thousand miles out of this bad boy I’m at 250,000

It's a lot easier to get to the oil filter by removing the battery rather than from underneath.

I did mine today and the previous owner used the transmission filter for the oil and an oil for the transmission. Battery much easier to do, but wish they had more room to place a rag underneath. I tucked in as many as possible and wiped up the rest. My filter was £37 in comparison to the aftermarket filter.

in these models there is a metal piece between the battery and filter, do not try to get in from the tip lol fyi

You said drain and fill 4 quarts but that's only a partial drain/fill correct? You have to do it 2-3 times with driving in between drain/fill sessions to get the remaining fluid through the torque converter right? So does that mean you go through 8-12 quarts total to get most of the fluid out? Been really trying to wrap my head around this procedure. Thanks for the vid! its the exact year and model I'm working on.

Do not. I repeat do not drive your car with low trans fluid you will destroy your transmission. I can't remember but I would call the local parts store or look online and see what is the transmission oil capacity. Then drain and fill to the correct level.

Lol yeah I'm only a certified KZfaq Mechanic haha. I've reused crush washers in my ol beaters , never had an issue but I agree to change em if you can.

@@dbmrobotic9321 yes brother! It's common for us to call tranny fluid "oil" . It's basically oil. But yeah if you go to the auto parts store, it's gonna be call Transmission fluid on the shelves. Good luck in your repair, and thanks for watching!

@@DIYStangsandFreedom sweet. Had some gnarly vibrations just prior to downshifting. Have already thrown money at it as I was told it just needed new engine mounts...let's hope this does it 🙏

@@AI_native oh forsure get those motor mounts changed. Once had a 99 3000gt with some tore up mounts, the engine would literally rock back and forth hitting the fire wall lol

Well it's been 5 years since this video was uploaded and the Subaru is still running fine without changing it. Probably wouldn't recommend going that much without changing your tranny fluid.

@@flimflam6547I'm sorry, I thought I answered that. If you're referring to the transmission oil filter, it's holding up well. I was saying that I wouldn't go 5 years without changing the fluid and trans oil filter if I were you. So to answer your question, the Puralator transmission oil filter used in this video is good quality. Puralator makes quality stuff and they also make filters for other companies that rebrand them. I would do whichever you feel comfortable with. In my opinion I think a Puralator filter will do just fine. Maybe that's just some serious Subaru nerds telling you to use OEM.
