I switched to that fluid on mine. Picked up a mpg or so, as well as much faster shifting. One gripe I have always had; the manual claims 5-6 quarts for a drain+fill, every 4eat i have done a simple drain+fill on took almost exactly 7.5 quarts.

It is always a good idea to put a wire brush or soft brush to all bolts and fittings you intend to undo, before you work on underneath of a vehicle. It helps to get sockets on bolts nicely and stops dirt etc from falling on your face and eyes. Also clear safety goggles are great.

Just used this to drain and refill my 2001 Forester. I had to replace the radiator, so I decided to change the fluid while i had the lines open. Worked great, especially liked the tip for cycling the transmission through the gears. I used just over five quarts with my drain and fill, but I had a new radiator to fill as well.

My father is a 40 year retired diesel mechanic. He always taught me that when using silicone gasket sealer to snug it up the bolts for the pan but not tight at first. let it sit overnight to cure then torque. This will create a small squeeze like you would get with an o-ring ensuring a better seal. The only reason not to do this would be time constraints like a shop, but if you're already waiting 24 hrs for the silicone to cure you might want to try it and see what you think. Ever since I started doing this, I've never had a even a drop leak.

im still waiting for the definitive mr subaru special on solenoid replacements in transmission valve bodies, including what the various symptoms of bad solenoids in the valve body of the various transmissions from the 4AT, 5AT, & TR580 AND TR690's. *i have reached a point where i believe it is going to be inevitable for me to have to replace one or two of them to get my soob back in fully functional (reliable driving) mode, and will probably place an order soon as they will take about 2 months to ship to australia. basically im not ready to quit on my outback yet as i believe that once i figure out whats actually been causing the performance issues andd fix them i will likely get another few hundred thousand kms out of it ;) i might even try to find some identical motors and trans from scrap yards and service them for future use etc ?

Trying to remove oil pan on the transmission and one bolt is inaccessible because it is blocked by the catalytic converter. Bolts on cat are jammed....oops. On the other hand , your outback seems to have all the room to remove the 10mil bolts on the pan. 👌👌

I had a leak in the AT cooling line of my 2005 Outback, went to Advance Auto stating make/model/year and the clerk sold me 3 qts. of IDEMITSU Type J. Before getting the line repaired I bought another qt. Now that I have it fixed I looked up capacities and discovered Subaru spec fluid is: Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid, IDEMITSU ATF HP, Castrol Transmax J, Pennzoil ATF-J or Dexron III. So the fluid is probably now about 1/3 IDEMITSU Type J, which is for Nissan/Infiniti, not Subaru. I talked to a tech guy at Idemitsu and he said their Type J will damage the Subaru transmission. Do you have any informed insights into whether I need to get the Type J completely out of the tranny, whether the standard drain plug drain would be good enough, or if in its diluted amount it is OK as is ??? I'm looking for a newer Outback and would prefer not to spend money on the 2005 if I can avoid it, but want to keep it working well.

Did this process today on my SVX with Permatex Automatic Transmission Gasket Maker (store was out of Ultra Grey), and got a digital torque wrench while I was at it. I was snugging the bolts, and when I got to the back of the pan, a few drops of ATF got between the mating surfaces. I pushed on, torqued all the bolts to spec, and now am letting it cure for 24 hours. Would those few drops of ATF be an issue that the gasket wouldn't seal properly? Thanks!

Not stated here is that this will only drain out about half of the old fluid, so you are mixing new fluid with the old burnt stuff. You will need to drain and fill at least 3 times ( and better, 4 or 5) to really remove the majority of old fluid.

I have a 2006 Forester. I was just looking at the Amsoil website. They offer ATF oil and the external filter. Now I have to decide if I want to buy the OE series or the more expensive Signature series. I have used Amsoil products in many other vehicles for the past 15 years. I signed up for the Preferred Customer which gives you free shipping. I like that they generally offer 3 levels of protection with their oils. Signature Series is the highest and most expensive. Depending on my vehicle use is how I determine if I use OE, XL, or Signature. Mostly I use the XL series. On the website you can select Look up a Vehicle and it will show available products and amounts. Very helpful. Yes, they are not cheap products but I like that they are a company based out of Wisconsin.

Mr Subaru, I really like Your videos, and I did some jobs in my Outback 2001 h6 watching Your tutorials. Thanks a lot! I'm trying to find a solution for problem which I have. When the weather is colder, and the car isn't used for one or more days, the transmission don't want to change to 2nd gear. Check engin light come on P0732. After mile or two everything works perfect. I have changed ATF. Drain off 3 times. I have cleared the oil pan and internal filter. Befor new oil I have changed the external ATF filter to OEM, couse the old one has had leakege. After 3rd oil change I have change the Oil filter again, but not OEM and for few weeks problem disapeard. Now comes back. ATF is Amsoil ATF ss series, so is full synthetic. I don't understand, why the problem appear only when is colder outside and after one day without car. I thought that the filter couse the problem, but now I'm not sure. Any ideas? Please, help, couse I heard from mechanics, that I need vey expensive AT rebuild. But AT is OK, works really fine after mile or in hotter days.

@@jerrybartlett1142 Nope. Now befor I start a trip, I put on HOLD and I use 3rd gear. So on the beggining car use gear 2 and 3. After mile or two I'm backing to normal and turn D. This is working completly fine.

4EATs are designed to shift firm to hard when cold to prevent slippage. That might be all that is.

Hey, I know you made this video over two years ago but I have a question or two. I have a 2012 Forester 4eat with 105k miles on it and I want to change the transmission fluid. I noticed that there was no filter change in your video (unless I missed it) Also I noticed you didn't use subaru's ATF fluid. In your experience, is there a difference in the two fluids? Is there an ATF fluid filter & if so, should I change it? How many quarts does it take to fill the ATF back up if I change the fluid as you showed in the video? Thanks

It may have an external spin on filter, not sure what year they removed them. Older Subarus called for GM Dexron ATF. If your 2012 calls for ATF-HP, use that.

I see this is an old vid however I was still curious I heard that opening up an auto trans can sometimes be harmful. I’m not an auto trans expert by any means but I figured removing the fluid with clutch material in it would make the trans prone to slip

Just noticed that you did all that work in taking the pan off and such, but you didn't even replace the filter (or screen they get small metal flakes in there too) that was there. So what was the purpose of taking the pan off other than to clean the mess out of the pan?
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 6 жыл бұрын
It's not a filter, just a strainer. I cleaned the strainer. The pan was seeping. I removed it to reseal it.

kevin norman if you can feel it change like almost thump into gear, when cold they can tend to bang a bit but once warm it should change effortlessly. I wold get a service done on it, a fluid flush and have the heat exchanger flow tested as these are the first things to clog with crud and impede flow, causing poor clutch pressures. I had a Nissan patrol that for nearly 6 months never saw overdrive even on the highway as the heat exchanger was too clogged. If that doesn’t solve it I would start looking deeper into the tram Addison control and/or wear on components. I would also check that all your tyres have the same tread depth and pattern as this may cause what seem to be transmission issues.

I know this is an old video, but I was curious to ask about the internal filter for the transmission fluid? Not just the outside can style. Did that also get changed and or did you go for a flush of the system and then replace the fluid?
@MrSubaru1387

Good evening mr. Subaru I got a question for you can flushing the transmission by taking the pan out and do a whole flush fixes hard shifting and slipping?
@nicholascroft520
@nicholascroft520 4 жыл бұрын
Muhammed Q not Mr Subaru but a good service and flush can help with hard shifting, CAN. In regard to slipping, it could be slipping due to a clogged filter or cooler, it could also be due to worn clutches. Changing the oil and filter if it’s worn clutches can actually make the transmission behave worse due to the fact that there is no clutch material suspended in the oil anymore so it doesn’t have the grip necessary to engage gears. I would take it to an automatic specialist and have them look over it to determine what the cause is.

I heard this gets out only about half of the fluid, there is a lot of chambers in a Transmission. a dealership would flush the whole system. would it make sense do do the above, then a few weeks later, drain and fill again? just a way to get maybe 75% new fluid
@MrSubaru1387

You get about one third of the fluid out with draining the pan. I do three drain refills spaced out between oil changes.
