Step by step walkthrough on dash panel removal on my 2005 outback xt. The process is pretty much the same from 2005 to 2009 Legacy models.

Thanks for this. Everything in the video was accurate and helpful. I just fully removed my dash 06 Outback MT. Two things I missed because the pieces were already removed in the video. 1) The trim pieces around the stereo, stick etc (on mine they have a wooden look) they each have a trim screw. Get the boot off the stick to access said screw. I didn't and broke one trim piece. 2) You must remove your steering wheel then instrument cluster to access screws behind the cluster. There are three screws holding in the instrument cluster. One you can see (top center of cluster. Two you can't, underneath the dash behind the steering wheel. I used one stubby Phillips and one long Phillips to access. You'll likely need a light.

Thank you :-) I just bought an 08 OBXT to body swap my 05. I didn't even realize the steering wheel telescoped till I heard that easter egg in your video. lol. But yea, also I didn't see any other videos for dash removal on the 05-09. Many titled that that don't actually mean the dash, but rather frontal sub components...

Nice video. Thought it’s worth mentioning that the lower kick panel just pulls straight off, as it’s just clipped in.

The instrument cluster needs to be pried up where the top screw is as you're sliding it out. I ripped a chunk out the dash trying to pull it out. Hope this saves others from repeating my mistake

I’m very sorry to hear that. I do recall the cluster being in there very snug. It took some persuasion to wiggle it out without going in from the back, from under the dash to push it out

Do you know if you need to disconnect ac to replace the heater core? Video definitely has some good tips I haven't been past the cabin filter change basically. Have done dashes before but not on this make / model.

I don’t believe you do but I’ve never actually gotten down to the heater core. I considered replacing it when I removed my dash but forgot about it so I’ll be flushing mine out first to see if performance improves

I can’t recall as I did a bunch of wiring while working on it for my 2013 sti steering wheel and the jdm dash kit/double din stereo. I’d say it might take 4 hours to take it out and another 4 to put it back in in reverse order. Everything takes longer the first time, of course so be prepared to account for that. are the prefacelift dashboards the same as facelifts? so would a 2004 dash fit a 2007/8? thanks great video btw

I don’t have a solid answer for that. I know my dash has a sensor on the top passenger corner. I’m not sure I’ve seen that sensor on all outback dash panels. I believe it’s an ambient air temp sensor for my dual climate control. I believe the 2008-2009 lower dash will mate to an older dash with no modification but I did trim a piece of where the lower panel snaps into the driver side on mine as I was running a newer lower dash driver side piece with a pre-facelift center console trim and they didn’t fit together. I don’t think it was actually necessary to do that. I should have just replaced my entire lower dash with the facelift trim. But I didn’t so I can’t tell you for certain if that trimming was actually necessary

Bolt = Threaded shaft secured with hardware Screw = Threaded shaft inserted into a body

did you have to pull the steering wheel? Couldn't you have just unbolted the column under the dash and let the column drop down? Is there a way to just remove the top dash panel to replace it without pulling the dash?

You could disconnect the steering column from the beam. I just found it easier to pull the steering wheel rather than struggle under the dash to get the column mounting points lined up with the dash beam. I don’t believe the top part can come out without removing the lower parts but I haven’t tried it that way

Your gauge cluster needs to stay the same you need to use the old one

Can you do it without removing the steering wheel?

If you remove it with a second person you may be able to leave it on. Otherwise you might be able to unto the steering column mounts and let the whole assembly drop down but that’s probably just as time consuming

No clue if this channel is active, but maybe you can help. I cannot FOR THE LIFE OF ME figure out how to remove the driver side air vent next to the door. The service manual says "Removed two pawls to remove side vent" with two arrows pointing to the top of the vent. Page 4305 I didn't see you remove it here.

I am still active. Just haven’t done anything with the Subaru worth putting on yt recently. The air vents just pop out with a trim tool. I think the best way is to pry from the top to disengage the clips but I’m not entirely sure. Last time I removed those was 2 years ago
