Documentation of a fix for an oil leak from the air/oil cyclonic separator on a 2005 Mecedes E320 CDI. I used an "O" ring from a 2002 VW Jetta Thermostat to repair this leak. The thermostat "O" ring fit perfectly, is really cheap, and gives a leak free seal now. I also came up with a fix for the oil drain seal aswell. More info available here:

My 06 E320 CDI has apparently been leaking from the separator for a good while. I bought a new one, and filler cap, and am installing them today. This video was perfect, thanks.

Did you have any smell inside the cabin because of this leak ?

Thanks for the info and the part numbers. I just got creative and used what I had :) The Teflon was used only as a spacer to keep the two O rings at the proper distance FWIW.

I just happened to have an O ring and other parts that fit perfectly so I them. I believe you have to buy the whole assembly from MB which means big money.

Wow. Ive usually had good luck with MB selling those crazy unique kinda things, guess not here. Got another one for ya. Mine looks like it just leaks from the big floppy tube in the front. Did yours? And did you ever apply small clamp or zip tie for extra sealing power? Thanks for the reply. Excellent Video!

I just bought one at an auto auction same car with 105k+ miles for just under 4 grand and when I got home I noticed smoke in the same area. I looked down and saw oil. It's not running hot. No check engine lights are on. I pray it's this simple.

is there cleaning to do on this MBZ PCV valve internally ? must have nasty oil/soot build up inside ? i have 05 Cdi 160k miles...

Just wanted to update. My junkbox seal repair didn't seem to fix my oil leakage issue so I went ahead and got the "correct" MB parts. That didn't take care of the issue either. I had the same leakage as before. I also tried non-hardening Hylomar sealant on the seals to see if that would help but still same result. Last evening I removed the separator and pressure tested it, and found that there were no cracks in the plastic so I know for sure oil wasn't getting blown overboard from that. Not sure at this point what the actual "fix" is since I have tried about everything.

+josh8loop I have the same leak from the oil seperator ( thats what my mechanic told me) planning on replacing the part with a used one which seem to be pretty cheap (25$ where i live). Why don`t you try replacing the unit and see the results

+Albi Ad Not sure I want to get a used one-may have the same issues. I certainly don't want to shell out the cash for a new one either. I pressure tested mine, and found that there are no leaking seems at all. I recently replaced the seal under the oil cap itself with no luck there either. I'm at a loss!

Don`t know if that`s your situation but mine is leaking from the plastic part next to the oil filler cap. Hope we get it fixed

Replace the separator. They're not that costly.

How do you like the cdi? Have you ran into any major issues? Average mpg?

+Sarah Dell I like it pretty well. Nice car, and worth maintaining. I have enjoyed learning how to maintain it myself without the need of the Dealership. There are quite a few "old school" trouble shooting methods paired with vehicle specific information from Mercedes that can allow the owner to diagnose even rather complex issues. I would also recommend people go to Benzworld.org and check out the W211 forum. Lots of additional help there.

This was my 3rd MB diesel, after my '82 300D, then '92 300D, and this car is amazingly great. Fabulous torque, mileage, handling. The V-6 BluTec's that followed have plenty of problems that my '06 doesn't have.

Would be nice to eliminate the oil and soot from entering the engine. EGR delete and a better cyclonic separator like the Provent unit perhaps.

egr delete is not good for engine !

Agree. The EGR valve gets sooty and sticks. I removed and cleaned mine a few times before I found a new one on Ebay for $165and replaced it. MB wanted >$600.
