Can tell he's a legit cardiologist due to his clear, concise, methodical way of explaining things. Thorough and to the point.

Really enjoy and appreciate your videos and the work you have done on them. I own a 2006 E320 CDI and now has just over 300,000 miles on it. I get great gas mileage. Last year was on the Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444-mile recreational road and scenic drive through three states. I set the cruse control at 57 MPH. The posted speed limit is actually 55 MPH. I got just over 57 miles per gallon with my car. It's is, as well all know, a diesel engine. While I did not start off with a full tank of fuel, I could have driven the whole thing without stopping to refuel. Again, thanks for your channel. It has explained a whole lot of things about my car.

Except for the fact that he used 229.51 oil which is for cars fitted with DPF - diesel particulate filter (hence ESP formula emissions system protection). This engine OM648 does not have a DPF and calls for the 229.50 spec, not the low SAPS, low ash formula.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I perform my own oil change on my E350. One trick I do when filling up the engine with oil is adding 1 liter of oil through the filter housing. It helps to protect engine at the first start up after the oil change is complete.

Cool video. Nice to see someone use the correct oil and filter. Most MB cars of this era Mann oil and air filter actually are OE. You can buy on amazon and compare.

Mercedes dealers are independently owned and I have noticed a huge difference in pricing between dealers. Tie rod example $98.00 to $38.00 and thats before any discount.

Dear Mr. Car.D.Ologist, I also own the 2006 e320 cdi and today I performed the oil change by removing the drain plug. I relized that the drain plug thread is in the aluminum of the engine block. Now I owned a Jeep liberty that was using the exact same scheme, drain plug threaded into the aluminum engine block. The user's groups were full of complaints about stripped threads, failed engines etc. And then it happened to me also, after about 10 oil changes. I was able to tap at a larger diameter and install an aftermarket drain spigot (!!!!!!). I would not recommend that for the e320, as long as you have a healthy thread for the oilplug. I believe that even by using a torque wrench the outcome will inevitably be a stripped thread. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, the oil extractor is the appropriate method for oil changes on this car.
@card.ologist45707 жыл бұрын
Dealer would agree with you. Clearly a controversial subject. For the record, though, I'm at 20 oil changes now and everything is just fine.
@jadesluv6 жыл бұрын
The oil drain plug screws into the oil pan, never into the engine block, but the pan is expensive ($500) on this 648 engine. Don't use a cheap piece of shit torque wrench. 30 Nm is not stressful on those threads. Always use a new copper crush washer!! Drain plug copper crush washer

konasteph, thanks for the information! I just bought a little 12 volt oil pump. It works great, takes a while, but while that little guy is working, that is the time that I change my filter and fiddle around.

Hello; Fine video and very usefull. I was just obliged to transpose it for my E320 CDI, which is a 2001 Modell. I've 2 questions: - do you confirm that there is no reset button of the following oil change alert for these models ? - accordind to your experience, which are the other operations to do at he same time of oil changing ? Thanks a lor for yout work. Sincerely

Is that an oil that contains detergents for diesel engines, or is it just regular oil for gasoline powered engines?

Hi there. you didn't talk about engine flush. flushing the engine especially a diesel is imperative to stop the contamination of new oil and prevent the build up of varnish on the cylinders also sludge in the sump. Hope this is ok! liked the gear box flush vid was very informative.

also what i would do is clean the the filter housing too with like brake or throttle body cleaner. that way there the housing has no old, dirty oil.

Are you changing oil at !0,000? Also, by jacking it up on the driver's side you are putting the oil pan at an angle away from the pan drain plug, so you are leaving oil in the pan on the passenger side of the vehicle. Jack it up on the passenger side so all the oil in the pan will flow to the drain hole. Just a thought

Car D.Ologist Thank you for your excellent tutorials. I have a 2005 CDI black on black as well with not even 120k miles. In all of your miles, has your car ever gone into "Limp Home Mode"? Mine randomly does this sometimes, but not always, throwing a CEL which then goes away on it's own after a few restarts and drives. Usually just shutting the engine off for a little while and restarting it takes it out of limp mode and returns full power. It's been doing this for years but not consistently; Sometimes in as little as 10 minutes of driving, but other times I can go hours without any loss of power. Any suggestions or tricks from yourself or any CDI owners? Subscribed!

Change your fuel filter!!! this will likely correct the problem. Typically no codes are thrown, but maybe a EGR baffle code. Easy to change the filter yourself, Mercedes filter is $50, two different sized hose clamps $2.00 each, special pliers for those clamps. My Mercedes dealer wants $250 to change the filter.
@lw4mma6 жыл бұрын
jadesluv: Thank you for the reply. I did change that not too long ago. It turns out that it was/still is the EGR valve. I installed a new one, and everything was perfect for a week. However limp mode/code came back. I just disconnected the electrical connector and the car runs great, but the CEL stays on obviously. Sent the part back waiting for an exchange.

229.51 oil spec (low ash) is for the newer vehicles with different emissions systems. Why not just buy what this one needs (according to manual) 229.5? You are purchasing online anyways where you can get anything you want delivered to your door. May as well opt for bulk 5-liter jugs of high end European synthetic at less cost than cases of Mobil 1.

Electronic sensor, you access the oil level readout by turning the key to position 1, selecting mileage readout on the dash, with the steering wheel menu button, then pressing the left side cluster button 3 times rapidly, this will put you into battery voltage display mode. Then on the steering wheel press the up arrow once. Move the key to position 2, the oil level will be displayed on the second line from the bottom. Wait a few seconds, with the engine off, the oil level will be about 7.4 quarts with a fresh 8 quart change and new filter. You may start the car, oil level will drop to about 5.6 quarts, then back up to about 6.2 after a 10 minute idle. Because the sensor is not in the middle of the pan, you will obtain different readings if the car is not level.

Why not just dump in the new oil into the filter chamber prior to installing the new filter element ?? saves spilling oil all over the engine when pouring into the small oil filler tube.

Mercedes oil filter cap tool part number It is heavy aluminum, uses a 22mm socket wrench. It has two tapped holes on top and two tapped holes on the sides. 2 machine bolts are held in the top of the tool. A bolt can be transferred (finger tighten) to the side to remove any slop when breaking the cap free. I just use one bolt, positioned it so that it doesn't interfere with anything to the right of the filter cap when breaking the cap free. Drain plug copper crush washer

Is anyone using Amsoil for this car?
@konasteph7 жыл бұрын
Oil extractor vs. draining via drainplug....makes sense to use the extractor if the drain plug screws directly into the aluminum engine block. As is the case in the 2.8 vmmotori turbo diesel engine thats in the Jeep Liberty CRD. What a pile of junk! Numerous complaints about stripped oil plugs. Would make perfect sense to use the extractor in that case. In the e320 it is just a time saver not having to put the car on the lift for a mere oil change. Now on the e320 cdi, the oil drainplug is threaded into a steel oil pan, right??????

Farm and Fleet has Mobil 1 for $6.30/qt. Spec 229.51, Most dealers use oil out of an overhead hose, so you really don't know what they are putting in.
@Creek_Hunter7 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't you use a mesh filter instead of a paper one?
@card.ologist45707 жыл бұрын
Fleece filter. Used it. The official MB filters are made by Mann and referred to as fleece
@jadesluv6 жыл бұрын
An original Mercedes filter on a 2006 CDI is paper, not fleece.

I worked for Mercedes and my dad owns this car. No they don't suck out the oil lol. Don't know where you're getting that. It depends on the dealer itself. Mercedes Benz does not recommend sucking it out. Techs use it save time and make money.
@jadesluv6 жыл бұрын
It says in the WIS to suck it out, lots of dealers do it this way. Is it the best way, no its not!!!

Lmao, you must be crazy. If you put it on ramps, the car is still on an angle... Put it on a jack and jack it up then put it on a jack stand, it's still at an angle...
@jx9067 жыл бұрын
True. But the gentleman in the video will not be starting his car on an angle if he lowers the jack all the way down. You can't be too careful with these extremely expensive cars. I like the idea of not lifting the car and using a vacuum oil removal tool, and not making a mess.
@TheBaccaClench7 жыл бұрын
Goliath X although using a vacuum is probably what most Mercedes dealers use, but I prefer the remove skid plate, remove bolt and drain style. If need be, I can use a cheap harbor freight transfer pump to get anything out. After all it's oil and not brake fluid, won't ruin rubber.
