This is the 2nd and final 125cc moto from the 2005 Glen Helen Motocross National in San Bernardino, CA.
In 2005, Red Bull KTM rookie Mike Alessi #800 came into the Glen Helen finale sitting 2nd overall in the 125cc Motocross Points Standings. Leading the series was Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Ivan Tedesco #30 (though he was running #102 at this race in preparation for the 2005 Motocross of Nations).
Coming into the race, Ivan Tedesco had won 2 overalls (Lakewood and Washougal) and 3 motos, while Mike Alessi won 2 overalls (High Point and Binghamton) and 4 motos for the season, but Tedesco held a 35-point lead over Alessi and needed just a finish of 5th or better in the first moto to secure the title. Unfortunately, Tedesco crashed with Team Suzuki's Broc Hepler before another rider crashed into Tedesco and knocked his chain off. With "Hot Sauce" down in the field, that left a BIG chance for Mike Alessi to pick up a significant chunk of points on Tedesco, but Mike had to go through Ivan's Pro Circuit teammate #8 Grant Langston to do it. As a matter of fact, the two battled in moto #1 before Alessi sent Langston off the track on the final lap; Langston tried to re-enter the track safely, but gained a position on Alessi and eventually won the moto (despite kicks from Alessi up Mount Saint Helens). The AMA revised Langston's actions and penalized him 5 seconds (1 position), which gave the moto win to Alessi; as for Tedesco, he fought back to 22nd, but finished out of the points for the first time in the 2005 125cc MX season. That dropped his points lead from 35 to 10.
With the final moto coming up, all Alessi had to do was win again and hope that Tedesco's luck would continue to run out. But it didn't work out in the least, due to a controversial move after they tangled. Eventually, Tedesco's 2nd Pro Circuit teammate Matt Walker #122 saw what Alessi was doing. Walker stopped his race, turned around, dropped his bike, and shooed Alessi away. Tedesco would keep his bike running and fight back to an 11th place finish, giving him his first and only Motocross title of his career; as for Alessi, another crash towards the end of the moto and getting landed on by another rider knocked him out of the moto, and the points. Alessi was credited with a 22nd place finish for no points... thus causing his chance at a title in his first pro season to go up in flames, but it didn't end for Alessi there...
Due to Mike Alessi's cheating move, he was later stripped of all of his points for the day, and lost all trust in the Motocross community for quite a while. To this day, Alessi has yet to win a Motocross title and a Supercross race. The 2005 Rookie of the Year award went to 250cc privateer #942 Juss Laansoo on his Motosport Outlet Honda CRF450R.
As for Pro Circuit Kawasaki, it was a bitter sweet day. Grant Langston won the last race of the season (his 4th of the season) on the brand new 2006 KX250F with his 2-1, while Ivan Tedesco walked away with his one and only 125cc Motocross Championship. He was planning to move up to the premiere class for 2006 and beyond. Unfortunately, Ivan Tedesco's Supercross career wouldn't pan out. He would podium 4 times in Supercross and win the 2009 Thunder Valley National for Team Honda.
Enjoy.

That was a great day of racing. It was the day the Alessis, former clients I sold bikes too, became anathema too me. I literally got to high 5 Ivan as he cruised his bike to the victory podium. Lots of big hitters in the 125 class. I like the track, riders and fans more then too.

Great day of racing? You bet! Just as good if you viewed the race like I did. Wow, never knew you sold bikes to the Alessis. Lucky you on high fiving Ivan Tedesco after that. He certainly proved he has the skills outdoors and not just indoors. I had to admit that when Tedesco returned to the 250cc class in 2012, I thought he'd be a title contender after how this season went for him.

Karma strikes? Alessi can't start his bike after standing on Tedesco's bike, high-sides, and finally gets landed on. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the apple tree. Over the years watching what the Alessi's have done along with their father, there's a lot of truth in that.

Mike Alessi likely made the worst judgment call in his life. On one side of things, you can't blame Alessi for wanting to win the title, but you sure don't want to win a title THAT way. You sure hit things on the head by saying "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." I will say that when Alessi jumped up to the premiere class in 2007 MX, I began to change my tune about him, and I was pulling for Alessi to beat James in 2008 MX; I was just sorry he couldn't do it -- especially after Red Bud. I got to meet Mike Alessi just a couple of weeks ago in my home state of Hawaii. He was definitely a changed man from this incident.

@@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames mike was like his dad. You can see why mike was like he was during that time by how his dad spoke to him. His dad praticly called him a loser if he didnt win and wouldnt accept it. Yet he never pressured jeff any way similar to mike. When mike was on the 450 against james i think he had a real trainer and not his dad shouting in a blow horn. Id met alota folks in the amateur ranks that woulda love to knock their old mans teeth in due to how cocky, snooty, just all round arrogance he had along with how he treated his oldest. People really didnt care for mike and his dad back in the day

I wouldn't have guessed because my Mom's like that to me at times. I would tend to agree about what you said about Alessi going up against James Stewart and "having a real trainer and not his dad shouting in a blow horn." Ironically, I was saying the same thing about James with all the on-track crashes he caused with other people. Stewart had his faults, and Mike Alessi had his, but I will not disagree with those who say Alessi made more changes than James Stewart did. I really think that if James made better choices after going SX-only in '09 for San Manuel Yamaha, he'd still be active (save for the WADA suspension).

Yes indeed. Ivan Tedesco keeping his 250F running was very key. I was a bit surprised he kept the bike running after Alessi pulled the crap he did. Alessi had to know it was a long shot -- even after Tedesco finished out of the points in moto 1 (22nd). Winning this title overall was a great bow on the package for Tedesco since he would be moving up to the premier class for 2006 and beyond.

I felt Langston had more in the tank considering he had been competing the entire series, as opposed to Villopoto, who was competing in his 3rd career race in the USA -- not counting his lone appearance in Canada at Calgary that same year -- 2005.

Alessi was a cheater from day 1. Remember his move on Broc Tickle in like 2014 or so. Not surprising at all to me that their main rider now is Vince Friese. The Alessis were dirty from the start. All Mike could do was get the start, then he just fell back within two laps. 09 was his best outdoor season, but overall, his career was just one that needs to be forgotten. If he had broken ties with his dad, I think he’d have done much better Tony is one of the worst things that ever happened to the sport.

Walker should've been more penalized than Alessi, that's fucking absurd
@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames
@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames 6 жыл бұрын
Personally, I disagree. Walker knew he was out of the running for the overall anyway (along with the championship), but if you're Ivan Tedesco, it's nice to have a teammate who's got your back. I don't blame Walker for what he did to Alessi; Walker could have been a real jerk and outright shoved Alessi, and then I'd say "Yeah, I think that'd be a penalty there." What would you want if you were Ivan Tedesco? A teammate like Walker, who gives you a hand, or Matt Walker turning a blind eye and continue on in his own race hoping Tedesco would win the crown? Personally, I'd be touched if I was Ivan Tedesco and Walker did what he did. I agree with what David Bailey said -- "If you're Tedesco, it's nice to have a teammate like that."
@TeemoQuinton
@TeemoQuinton 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not talking from a rider standpoint, I stay where I am saying all three should have been penalized and points of that race nulled. The same team thing puts a bit on Tedesco's head due to the relations, in the exact same way Alessi got fined for something his brother did. They have a relation and accordingly need to be punished. From a racer standpoint, I want my teammate to stand out for me but not in the way of getting fined. Alessi already fucked himself over that race doing what he did, so he was out regardless.
@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames
@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames 6 жыл бұрын
If you say all 3 should have been penalized and had their points nulled, what did Tedesco do wrong? Alessi was the one who caused the most damage. In the eyes of the AMA, Tedesco and Walker did not break any rules. I don't remember Pro Circuit putting a bit on Tedesco's head due to relations; Tedesco had a bit of a welcome back when he got called back by Mitch Payton to race the 250cc class in MX in 2012. The laser incident at Washougal still makes me scratch my head to this day to why Mike Alessi was fined when he had nothing to do with it. This is the only case of injustice I have seen the AMA make -- and I've followed this sport for 21 years.
@TeemoQuinton
@TeemoQuinton 6 жыл бұрын
I believe Walker got a punishment for the shove and such, but I'm taking the stance they put on that on this one. Either we retroactively say the Alessi incident with the laser needs to be fixed and they get their money back (Excluding the brother who did the laser in the first place) or we go back and null Tedesco's points from this because again, pretty sure Walker got a punishment as well. I dunno, I'm taking it how they treated the only other notable incident I've got in my head involving multiple people. "Oh you're affiliated with this guy? Punished for affiliation with a party who was in the wrong."
@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames
@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames 6 жыл бұрын
I don't remember reading Matt Walker got any punishment, but I do remember Mike Alessi had all his points stripped for the day. The laser incident was indeed from Jeff Alessi. Mike, I am sure, had nothing to do with that incident, and this is the only wrong outcome I've personally seen from the AMA. If you want to add in the Stewart/Reed debacle at Phoenix 2010 (of which the AMA later reversed their penalties on Stewart and Reed in the main after JS blatantly took out Kyle Partridge in the heat race AND ALMOST WALKED), that's 2 incidents off the top of our heads. Well, back to this incident, Tedesco wasn't in the wrong as far as I could see, and neither was Matt Walker.
