Thanks for posting the instruction video. You saved me a lot of time. My 1st starter changeout on a bike. On older cars they just slide right out without having to take the long bolt out through the primary side. If you are ever in Cali I'll be glad to buy you a beer.

Facing this job myself I found your video. Very well done, audio was good and editing was spot on, showing is what we need to know and not wasting time showing every bolt getting tightened. THANK YOU for taking the time, it was a big help to me.

I know the video is old now, but very informative and nice job getting clear shots of everything. My 09 Ultra is making an awful hammering sound occasionally. Told may need new updated compensator. Bike has 68k and may be time.

I replaced the starter on my 2007 Dyna Street Bob, I didn't have to take apart the primary, you can take it off and slide it in from the other side, just two bolts and a few electrical connections. Easy peasy.

I have a 95 Ultra Classic. I followed all the steps and the starter is loose and ready to come out. However, the oil filler/dip stick assembly is in the way. Do I have to drain the oil and remove all this or is there a 'trick' I'm missing. Thanks, Dave

Hey i have a 98 wide glide and need to replace the jackshaft and ring gear. The ring gear is tapered on one side and flat on the other which side (i think tapered) goes towards starter? My oem ring gear is flat both sides. With jackshaft does spring go on after star washer or before. Again this is all diff from original. I bought drag specialists parts. Any help is appreciated.

for the starter bolts use a ball Allen socket...and a 95 ultra and 2000 dyna are completely different...on the ultras you may have to remove the filler spout unless you hold your mouth just right

Great how to do video. But invest in a $20.00 torque wrenchbfrom harbor freight. It will pay for itself in the long run. With no keaks and no stripped threads. Also only fill the primary to the outer ring of the clutch spring. More fluid does not add to the cooling of the clutch. In fact over filling will cause clutch slip and hard finding gears. Im a 12 year harley tech and 2 time National Champion drag racer.

juanjohnism working on a friends softtail with a EV2 engine. Got it running. The engine wouldn't crank. Bench tested the starter and it worked. Took the ground cable off the frame and the bike started right away. This lasted for a little over a month. He gets on the bike to go home Saturday and the bike won't start again. What would cause the starter to spin but not engage?

+sempercompellis - I just had to tap mine the other day. I just hit it on 3 different sides with a wrench and it fired right up. Leave it to Harley to place the location of the critical charging system components, in the wrong location. The starter should be in front of the engine where the cooler air can get it running much longer, instead of under the battery and right behind the hot rear cylinder to shorten the life span of such a critical component, and you have to disassemble the primary housing, gasket, and all to just replace a starter. Wait till your stator burns out, which happen quite often on these bikes, another critical, charging system component, hidden and encased in the primary side housing, right up against the hottest part of the engine, the lower crankcase where heat is excessive, and it is encased in a metal magnetic rotor too, so no heat dissipation occurs, so, get ready to disassemble the primary chain drive and clutch basket and compensator, to get to the stator, to change it out often if you ride at all.

No Earl, You fill the Primary up to the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring, as viewd from the derby cover opening, no more. It generally will be just under 1 quart. I do this several times a week.

@@t.s.racing Only a dumb ass fills any primary through the derby cover. You fill them through the inspection plate and use one quart and they will last longer

Its a Twin Cam John. 1989 - 2006 took a similar starter. 89-93 used a smaller 1/4 20 jackshaft bolt. 94-06 used a 10- 32 threaded bolt. Hope that helps.

Seriously no need to add extra oil. Usually you want to run a little less then recommended, makes finding neutral a breeze.

I cant for the life of me figure out why you disassembled the primary cover and removed the starter drive gear? Both new and rebuilt starters come complete, including the drive gear. There is nothing keeping the starter from being removed as a complete unit. Also, if you are tapping on the old starter to make it work you probably just need the copper contact kit that goes in the end of the solenoid. The kit is about $25.

You probably could have put in a solenoid kit from the other side without having to remove the starter. It sounded like your solenoid was the problem, not the starter.
