as a life, long motorcyclist and 45 of my 64 years of riding HD's I'm happy some things never change. they have been tightening bolts on HD's since, 1903 !

I had an ironhead sportster. I took it down to the frame, cleaned everything put it back together with loctite. Never had anything loosen up in 15 years. Great video.

I just had the negative battery terminal bolt fall out on my softail 2 days ago. Drove me nuts figuring out what the problem was. I got this video as a suggestion just now and I'm laughing my butt off when you got to the part about battery terminals. When I had my 71 Superglide, it was an annual rite of passage to go over the entire bike and tighten everything as well as giving her a spring oil change.

Good video....Over the years (roughly 45) of riding I had a simple approach to loose bolts/nut. #1 Remove bolt. #2 Clean both threads, not just with a rag but with a solvent like brake clean. #3 Apply Loctite. #4 Torque to proper spec if known. I have found that if you do this every time eventually nothing comes loose.

Great tip about checking the battery terminal bolts every 5k miles. My bike went totally dead on me in the middle of nowhere 4 years ago. Luckily, another Harley rider who had the same experience stopped. Sure enough, the negative terminal bolt was loose. I tightened it up and was on my way. Now I check em, and put blue threadlocker on the bolts if they come loose.

Thumbs up on the battery terminal tightening !!! I almost got caught on a road trip when my bike wouldn't start. Jumped it but when I turned it off it would not start again until I jumped it again. Thought I needed and new battery. After some trouble shooting I finally went to the simplest cause and found my terminals were loose. Now every month I recheck/tighten the terminals.

I've been riding a softail custom for 13 years, spoked-tired bikes for much longer, and never thought of 'truing' the wheel/spokes. I also ride a TREK road bicycle and truing the wheels is done a couple of times a year. Thanks for this info.

The first thing to tighten is the nut behind the handbars. LoL 😂

Hey John. Just wanted to stop by and say thanks. Your tip on the battery terminals just helped me. Had the battery out on a tender over the winter. I didn't tighten down the positive terminal enough and she loosened up on me. Intermittent contact, so the engine would die for less than a second, then come back. All based on vibrations from specific RPMs. Was driving me crazy and I thought I had a major issue. Thanks, man. All your videos have been a huge help and very entertaining, too.

Totally nailed it on the Dyna - What you need to tighten. New Battery last season - this season - mystery die and restart while driving and at stops - started simple - loose battery terminal - not wiggle loose - but loose enough. Tightened the terminals and bingo - no more problem.

Thanks for the great entertainment and insider info that helps me keep my ride safe and fun! As a suggestion for a future video I would like to see a segment devoted to fasteners. Thread pitch, nuts , ,bolts, washers, cartikeys, etc. Electrolysis, dis-similar metals, how and when to lubricate or seal. It's a world onto its own. Torque matters. Why some fasteners are replaced everytime they are taken apart? I'm guessing when a steel bolt is installed in an aluminum part the interface is a function of torque. Over torque could distort the aluminum threads rendering the part to galling. The shifter lever as an example. installed with the correct torque and the proper lock tight it would not come loose. As a side the lock tight will keep the moisture from deteriorating the steel to aluminum dissimilar metal. In the marine industry this is a major problem. Fasteners of different materials make moisture as the air heats and cools. Then the rust or as the case with aluminum it oxidized. When you go to take them apart the aluminum threads take some abuse. A new bolt isn't going to do much good. But if a barrier sealer like lock tight is used the too metals don't bond and if cleaned with a thread tap and a bronze brush after disassembly can be used again and again. Just a suggestion

Thanks for the tips, after watching this video I went out to the garage and checked my shifter linkage, felt tight. I had the sprocket bolts back out and get sheared off on the highway, it sounded like I was dropping parts all over the road. Safely got over to the shoulder of the road but tore a rotator cuff loading the bike on a trailer in the pouring rain. That bike seemed snake bit. Traded it in a couple of years later. Great video John! Yes my Sportster has the laced rims option and the manual states 5k inspection on spoked rims which most folks blow off, they loosened up on me and hence the awesome death wobble appeared.., thanks again for another great Video!

I have an oldy moldy 1977 Sportster that I bought brand new and it only has 25k miles on it. It's all stock like it rolled out of the dealership except for the pipes. It's had its issues but all in all been a good bike. But back to you, I so appreciate your advice and it's fun to follow you. I have had my bike quit on me when i was out riding. It was just a dirty battery hook up. After i cleaned it, no more problem. Also taught me to carry the right tools. I didn't have the right tools. I had bolts in my seat i didn't have the tool for. Allen bolts. I had Allen tools, but not the right size. Now i do. I started checking each bolt on my bike and adding the tool for it.

This probably gets old but...great video. My pet peeve regarding KZfaq vids is taking 20 minutes to demonstrate a 2 minute job. Your instruction is tight and entertaining at the same time. THANKS. Also, one spec note...2 scoops on the Folgers coffee. Must've been a light beer night. ???

I just bought a 2004 Sportster XL1200R, in January 2022, haven't rode it yet and put it in the Harley shop for a 5,000 mi. service with two new Michelins. I enjoyed your show so I did just what you asked, Subbed, left a thumbs up, and a tap on the bell. I hope to learn about Harleys, I haven't owned one since my first one in 1964, it was a 1941 Military bike, complete with a hand shift, suicide clutch, and a spark advance, lol, wish I would have kept it now. I’ve had the loose battery terminal problem, exactly like you described. Had to get the tow. I was embarrassed when I finally figured out the problem. Nice job on the “5 Things to Tighten” video. Keep it up. Suggestion for future video ... Getting Rid of Squeaks.

I always put a dab of blue loctite on my battery terminal bolts. Had one come loose years ago and it melted the post on the battery from the vibration.
