As the final pairing of Retief Goosen and Jason Gore faltered, international qualifier Michael Campbell, of New Zealand, looked to complete an underdog story in the 2005 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. Tiger Woods also made a charge.

It's amazing to think that even after winning this tournament Micheal Cambell still was behind Tiger Woods' caddy as the highest paid sportsmen in New Zealand.

Are you sure about that? He won $1.17 million prize money for that win alone. I just Google'd for his caddie's salary, and, Google says that it's between $1.500 and $2.500 per week *during tournaments*. Which means that it should be much less than what Campbell won in this single tournament.

Some crazy facts: 1. Retief Goosen should have won 3 US Opens in five years 2. Jason Gore won 3 Nationwide Events and a PGA Tour Event in 2005. All of those wins came after this US Open 3. Michael Campbell actually won this event

I was hoping this would include the Father's Day montage, but it looks like it's been edited out. My dad and I were featured wearing matching shirts and taking bites of our lunch at the same time, which the commentators referred to as "synchronized eating" (you can hear Dan chuckling about it as they come back from break at 2:04:22). We have it recorded on a VHS tape somewhere, and I guess I should look into digitizing it sometime in the near future.

@@sagemattp Either 09’ PGA, or 2007 Masters when Zach won. I always felt like Tiger should’ve won that as well. Tiger gave the 09’ PGA away, so I wouldn’t totally count that one, but Y.E certainly played the round of his life that day! You’re correct about the 2002 PGA, and 07’ U.S Open👍🏻

Interesting that in 2007 they went digital with the broadcast, and look how much clearer the broadcasts are now compared to this. I almost prefer the old grainy broadcasts pre-2007. This was such a great Open. Kudos to Michael Campbell for digging deep and going for the win.

The PGA Championship was at Valhalla in 1996 and 2000 so only a 4 year gap. I think that’s the closest gap having a major at the same course. But I think this was the quickest a course got back into the rotation for the U.S Open.
