@@dans_Learning_Curve Great question Dan, I was wondering the same thing! Bernie said that it was a coincidence. Maybe the sensor was on the verge of crapping out, and a slight change in rpm made the fault show up more regularly?

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics could be when the engine gets hot it starts to act up as he mentioned later in the video that it would randomly die without any load, we all know that sensors tend to act up when heated.

I have a 2007 Jeep liberty. Two times this week I turned my vehicle off for about 5-10 minutes, then went to turn it back on. And it was wanting to stall out. It was pretty bad. But I managed to get it started by pushing excessively on the gas. This video made me think outside the box for possible part failures. Thank you for being so clear and understanding. Tomorrow morning I will take it up to Auto Zone for a scan for codes. Then over to the shop for a oil change and hopefully they can use the same scanner tool you have to figure out the problem. Thank you!

Large electrical loads briefly loads the engine speed and consequently changes the engine cadence. Hall effect type systems are very sensitive to frequency changes and thus the change in engine cadence exposes a defective crank sensor. This is one of the reasons why I prefer Hall effect type systems over VRS systems, they are much more sensitive and simpler in design, to approach this level of resolution, GM uses two VRS sensors!? Despite the hate and lack of funding for development those Dodge boys can still compete with the best. I believe Chrysler could have implemented a filter for a small glitch like this but - why would anyone not want to know of an early impending failure?
@sheldonx3283
@sheldonx3283 3 жыл бұрын
Joe luang - that's exactly what I was saying!!! If the pcm tolerance is turned that closely for the hall effect sensor to detect malfunctions, then it should at least trigger a pending code in the PCM for crank sensor performance / intermittent. Then after repeated occurence it would set a store code. Manufacturers trying to cut costs in software development!!! As expected from Chrysler! Instead they investing in SGM trying to lock technician's out, stating it's for security reasons. 👎👎👎
@mikechiodetti4482
@mikechiodetti4482 3 жыл бұрын
You were able to see it quit. I've had intermittents that did something similar. Two 1997 GMC Mini vans with the 4.3L V6 engines over 100,000 miles on the first van, had the same intermittent stalling, usually on the road. It took a lot of driving with my old two channel scope and DMM ( it was over 15 years ago when I had these two intermittents) to find out it "could be" the ign module or ign coil. When the intermittent had shown itself, I finally had the scope positioned to show the computer timing output which was sent to the external ignition module. The module in turn toggled the Neg side of the ignition coil which then sent the spark through the distributor, the spark plug wires and the spark plugs. With the scope on "flight record," I saw when the engine stopped, the signal to the coil from the module stopped, but the engine took time to fully stop. During that ramp down time ( of the engine) the PCM was still sending the computer timing output ( 5 volt square wave) indicating the crank sensor was still sending the signal to the computer. Without the old Fluke 98 scope it would have been fire the parts cannon! As it was, the spark plug center electrodes were worn down to the insulator, the ignition wires were original, and possibly the ignition coil was stressed due to the worn out plugs. After replacing those parts, no more intermittent stalling.

@adamapsitis6325 3 жыл бұрын
Knowledge and skill on another level 🤯. I am trying to fully understand the process here, so it makes sense that you would collect data from the ignition coils and injectors as these are providing the engine with two of the three fundamental elements required for running (Fuel and Ignition) it also makes perfect sense why you looked at the cam/crank signals as these are the inputs used by the PCM to determine fuel and ignition timing. I guess what is key here is to look if the outputs (Injectors, Coils) cut out before the engine stops rotating. I presume if this was a bad fuel pump the outputs would keep operating until the engine stops. If you did not have an input issue like in your case study, where would you go next and why? Cheers, Adam.

Too many shops change parts as part of THEIR " diagnosis " . I would guess the alternator and computer cost about $ 1000.00 installed . The vehicle then does the exact SAME thing . I don't see how they get away with it . Lube Tech , maybe - if they use the correct fluids . Technician - definitely not . This is what happens when you use your BIG TOE instead of a scope .

There is so much fundamentals training on offer for free on KZfaq, such as Scanner Danner, Schrodinger's Box, then you've got the awesome case studies such as these from ATS, Ivan at Pine Hollow, Eric O at South Main Auto and many many more. You don't have to start big, any scope is better than none and there are some good 2 channel scopes out there for little money. 8 channels on the ATS Elite lets you capture more signals at once, with fewer channels you would have to run the tests multiple times to build the picture but you could still do it.... as long as the fault could be reproduced on demand or was occurring frequently. If you noticed here, by observing the 8 channels simultaneously, it was easy to see the relationship of cam, crank ,coils, injectors and power - and then quickly deciding which ones *weren't* an issue, hiding those traces allowing the problem ones to be focused on.
