How has the maintenance been

I was surprised by that, you would think S 350 would be somewhat common but come to think of it I never see any. Very cool and rare, special car and congratulations for finding one!

They certainly don't.

I owned a 1989 300SE. It was one of the first Mercedes to have dual airbags, which the newer leather interior, with leather lining in the doors. I loved the fact that it wasn't as long as the SEL's, which made it more nimble on the road, or at least I thought so. I will say that I wasn't crazy about the transmission. Unless you smashed on the gas it started out in second gear, which was smoother, but not nearly as responsive. And at high speeds the tachometer read very high, which I get was for better response at high gears, but I thought it should've had another higher gear for when cruising.

Funny thing, that in this car engine's displacement is 3.7 actually.

Later model W220s were actually quite good. There’s a guy on KZfaq who put together an excellent video on the true cost of ownership of a W220 S-Class - it’s not as bad as people claim it is. He actually proved that you can own and maintain one of these for the same price as you can a Camry.

Christian W I agree with you that later W220s could be quite good, but that wasn’t the point. If you compare the overall durability, innovation and even design of the W140s, it’s impossible to label it bastardized, as the reviewer did. It wasn’t so much a critic of the W220s, but a recall on the relevance of the W140s.

Christian W Wrong. Earlier W220.1 are more reliable. No ABC. They also screwed electronics up on the W220.2. Yep. The COMAND 2.5 in the W220.1 is perfectly reliable as well.

Fábio Espíndola You are also wrong about the W220 being more unreliable. I know for a fact it's easier to have a problem with the 140 drivetrain. The SOHC engines paired with the 5G-tronic in the 220 are more *reliable*. The electronics are perfectly reliable if you don't mess with them. Avoid the ABC suspension and it's even more reliable.

The W140 is widely known as the king of the S class and the most over engineered Mercedes ever , they spent one billion dollars over 10 years I have one that is in impeccable condition and still turns heads

Not for the 350. The S430 and 500s from this era had them.

Jonathan G the s350 does come with parking sensor but most people wanted the v8 power not the v6 I just purchased s350 and mines has parking sensor

It is a good car, that is until something fails and that won't be cheap to fix.

@@curiouscars9282 Yes that is true that the w140 was Mercedes' way of over doing it, which has been either loved or hated by the public. In my humble opinion, the w140 was the true successor to the w100 600 and the cost invested went into the longevity and refinement of the vehicle instead of new features and gadgets i.e the BMW e38 was considered as a competitor to the w140 and the BMW came equipped with alot more modern tech but still ended being cheaper than the Benz?, perhaps Mercedes intended to target a clientele that were after a luxury experience that was focused purely on the luxury i.e comfortable seats, real wood, and the 'cloud' like ride that they spent an absolute fortune and time on. Also I believe the w140 was more of a statement rather than a vehicle to please the tech lover like the modern vehicles are, in fact the w140 was the vehicle used to underpin the Maybach 57 and 62 although the w220 was being produced before the Maybach's were. Also the w140 was the first car model to introduce the Mercedes v12 therefore it was going to be either make or break for Mercedes, and to better their odds, they made sure that they could get as close to perfection as they could. Same was said for the w100, I did like w220 but after riding in the back of them countless times together with all the other s classes, it definitely felt "different" .
