@@Craigs_car_care The root cause is the pin that pushes down the lever is made of plastic. Over time it is bound to break. I just fixed it by driving a right length thin screw through where the plastic pin is. Now the metal screw becomes the pin. Works much better. The trick for this to work is to carefully drill a pilot hole start from smallest drill bit in the center of the area where the pin is broken off. Then gradually increase the hole size so the screw will fit and there is still plastic around it. Obviously the screw needs to be small diameter like size 6 or smaller with about 1-1/4" length. Hope this will help some DIYs to fix this problem and save some bucks.

Thanks Craig! With your help, I just successfully repaired the glove box on my 2007 Honda Odyssey. My only fear was when I received the replacement part I ordered, it appeared to be too dark. I purchased "Genuine Honda 77540-SHJ-A01ZC Glove Box Lock Assembly" on Amazon, by following the color code from my vehicle, and it matched/worked perfectly. Your directions and explanations were spot on. I really appreciate the work you put into this video. Thanks again!

@@Craigs_car_care I also bought the "Genuine Honda 77540-SHJ-A01ZE Glove Box Lock Assembly" on Amazon from Honda and the holes were not threaded for the screws. I don't want to destroy the original screws and strip them. Is that common for either of you?
@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 3 жыл бұрын
@@cnlawrence1183 great question and I honestly do not remember for sure but think they get threaded on the install. You can add a little WD-40 to the bolt and step it in and out slowly to watch that it is building a new thread. Otherwise you may have to go by the dealer and ask to see theirs. I also asked the other techs in the shop, but to no 100% avail. We did not have any new ones to look at. Sorry we could be of more help.

Thanks for sharing this great and effective information! My first search for a solution included purported Honda mechanics suggesting to drill out the lock or break off the latch -- and risk wrecking the glove box, which is not a cheap replacement (shocking how spendy it is!). I was so glad to find this super helpful video, which allowed me to open my glovebox within about 2-3 minutes. New latch has been ordered, and the whole experience will cost me less than $30 and very little time. THANK YOU for making this economical repair possible. You are appreciated!!!

Craig, just to let you know that the trick worked for me on my 2012 Honda Pilot also. It took me 5 mins to watch the your video and less than 2 minutes to open the glove box. I had asked the dealer service rep (in Oklahoma City) while they were working on something else and was told that to open it it would require to break the glove box and replace it all. Now that puts in doubt everything else they said about the repairs attempted yesterday. So, thanks again for posting your video. Now, I'll just get the latch and replace it as you showed.

When the latch failed on my Honda Odyssey, I saw what a crappy cheap piece of plastic it was and I decided there was no point in getting a replacement part because it would be made of the same crappy cheap plastic. Using screws, I put a couple strong magnets on the corners of the glove box and a couple metal washers opposite the magnets where the glove box closes. That holds the glove box closed. For a handle, I used a metal u-bolt that fit into the screw holes where the latch used to be. All metal and it will last longer than the crappy cheap plastic parts that Honda put in the car. And it cost less than the replacement latch. (Obviously it doesn't lock, but I don't care about that.)

Excellent video. Thanks for the instructions! Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me (2010 Odyssey). One thing I noticed was that my key would not turn all the way to the locked position. It turned out this was important, as it meant some of the internal metal was bent/warped, which also prevented the metal from catching onto the release. In case anybody else can’t get the instructions in this video to work, we removed the upper glove box (key point is a tensioner which pops off) and 2 screws under the lower glove box. This allowed access to the black latch, which we could then push with a screwdriver.

This is what's happening to me right now for my 2010 Ody. When you removed the upper glove box, you mentioned " (key point is a tensioner which pops off)" what do you mean by this ? I can't seem to find anything tensioner in there. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 5 жыл бұрын
@@rogerserafin hi Roger the retainer clip is for when you change out the locking mechanism . If I'm understanding correctly you've already been able to get the glove box open and are referring to the clip that holds the key cylinder part in place. If you're looking at this on a phone it can be hard to see I've had other folks mentioned it was easier on a desktop computer to see the clip that holds it in place.
@tomtsao1230

Roger - if you’re referring to the upper glove box, there are two guide latches on the edges - those just slide out. But there is a tensioner in the middle (or maybe it’s called a damper? It keeps the glove box from opening too quickly. I couldn’t find an obvious way to disengage it, but then I realized it popped/snapped on. Not sure whether this makes sense?

After damaging mine to the point the trick doesn’t work I had to use a hole saw on the side of the glove box to gain access to the screws holding the mechanism in place and used a low profile ratchet fitted with a Phillips bit to get the screws out.

I spent a long time trying this fix for my 2010 odyssey. I must have a different issue. i can see the latch he's referring to when trying to use to screw driver. I'm able t get to it and push. The latch itself looks like it is already down, and when I push on it nothing happens. Maybe my lock mechanism is the issue, nd not the plastic? I appreciate the video, any recommendations?

Hi Bill, Sorry for the late response, the latch may have jammed internally. I have seen where "stuff "in the glove box gets wedged up and will not let the door open also.

I had the same problem. My failure mode was: *could not move into locked position *could not open After removal, here is what I found: *plastic pin broke off (as described in video) *lever was heavily bent *spring mechanism pushing the lever up had fallen off I was able to remove as follows: *insert flat head screwdriver BELOW the lever *with key in lock, I was able to use the screwdriver to push the lever up and move the key into locked position *continuing to hold the lever up with the screwdriver, I could move the key back into unlocked position, this time with the lever positioned ABOVE the metal pin, ready to engage *moved screwdriver from below the lever to ABOVE the lever (as shown in video) and opened latch as shown I was then able to fix like this: *removed lock *straightened lever (easily bends back into shape) *reinstalled spring mechanism (found in glove box) *drove screw into plastic where pin broke off (pilot hole!!) Thank you for the video, seeing the lock up close and the mechanism explained allowed me to troubleshoot and successfully fix. Good stuff!

This unfortunately did not work for me. I think it broke in a couple of places because I could not get it to go in the locked position. So that plastic rod was broke, but it was also stuck somehow where this trick to open the latch would not work. We basically had to take a Dremel and cut the lock in pieces until we could rip it out. A lengthy effort and could not have done it without a Dremel Multi-max. Nice video but my lock problem was more complex.

Thanks for the heads up. Some colors have there availability changed and it pulls it off the list. I will follow up on that/ In the mean time try going directly to Amazon and list your vehicle to find it. Some have to come from the dealer.

Uh oo. Any ideas when its in the locked position? From what I understand my key should wrk and slides right in like butter but no cigar. It does not wrk. I dont want to hullkk the dash
@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 3 жыл бұрын
If the key is not working start with trying another key. It is also possible the key lock is jammed internally. I'll bet you have tried it both ways and have oiled it as well. The tumblers that make up the lock cylinder do not fail that often. Sorry I cannot be of more help here. The last time I saw this the client was trying the valet key instead of the main key that will start the engine and unlock the doors but not open the glove box.

Hi Tony, you will have to keep trying to get it to release. You might also be able to slightly push in and out on the door while you are moving the latch around and see it if will pop free.

I know you posted this video a while ago, but do you remember if the replacement latch’s attachment holes were threaded? I ordered one whose holes were not threaded, and when I got a replacement, its holes weren’t threaded either!
@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 2 жыл бұрын
Good Morning Tom, Great question! I want to say they are not threaded but cannot remember for sure. You can go by the dealerships parts store and ask to see one of theirs or ask them since they see them everyday. That will remove any doubt or risk damaging a new one. If they are not threaded you can use a bit of oil or even soap to tap the new screws in on a workbench. When doing so turn it in one or two turns then back out the screw and blow out the hole and add more lubricant before starting again and repeat until the screw is where it would be if it was all assembled taking the thickness of the door material into consideration.

Craig, what is the spec on the screws used to mount the lock assembly into the glove compartment? We bought our 2009 Odyssey from a private party, and the latch was completely missing. I was able to order the part online, but it didn't come with the two mounting screws I needed. I can't find the specs for the screws in my research.

And the back up plan would be if that don’t work? How do you get in to it
@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 3 жыл бұрын
Good Morning Homer, some others that had no luck with this release found several other ways to get in. Some are more destructive than others, so read down the comments and pick the one that is best for your situation. I have had only one that I could not pop free without having to damage other parts to get it open. On that one I gave the client the option to cut an access hole in the door for the glove box and replace it along with the new lock. I first made sure the color we needed was in stock before taking this path. It did make sure hat the overall dash area was not damaged. Some have reported drilling a small hole near the latch nd using a pick to reach in and pry the latch back enough to get it open. Sorry this did not work for you and I whoosh you luck on getting it open with the least amount of aggravation.
