I can't say thank you enough for doing this video! I got stranded and because of you I was able to troubleshoot and switch out my relays. I was able to get my bike home thankfully. I have replaced both relays and now we'll tackle the starter. Thank you again!

Mine is currently in the intermittent failure state. If I let the bike cool down it starts right up, if it’s hot however it grinds without starting.

Great video! It was short and very informative. I have a 2000 Road King Classic that is giving me starter problems. Planning on rebuilding the starter solenoid this week.

do you have to pull primary cover , i need to change my starter on a 2000 road king but have been told may have to pull primary to access

@@victorday3410 I'm waiting on parts but I don't think you have to remove the primary cover. I also have a 1982 FLH. You do have to remove the primary cover on the shovel heads.

The 2007 RK (my bike) was the first to use the 6 speed transmission, which does not require pulling the primary cover. I believe on your bike, pulling the primary cover is required.

Thanks a lot, mine it is same bike, I have problem to start only when motor is hot, it is a mysterious thing for me,,,
@fixedmyharley2637
@fixedmyharley2637 2 жыл бұрын
My starter would fail when the motor was hot. I used the jumper wire to the starter solenoid that I showed in the video to confirm that the starter was at fault. By jumping voltage from the battery directly to the starter solenoid, it confirms that the starter solenoid was at fault (assuming the battery is in good shape). When the battery is good and the starter is good, the motor should crank when the jumper wire is applied from the battery to the starter solenoid. If the starter does not crank (and the battery is good) when the jumper wire is used, it means the starter is bad. Some have commented that you can save money by rebuilding the starter solenoid instead of replacing the whole starter assembly (motor and solenoid), but the whole starter motor and solenoid assembly was only about $125 from DB Electric. Intermittent starter failure is very frustrating, but by using a jumper wire when the engine was hot, it confirmed that my problem was the starter motor and not other components of the primary starter system. Build a jumper wire as I showed in the video, keep it in your saddle bad, and when your motorcycle won’t crank when hot, try the jumper wire test. If it fails, replace your starter motor, that what I did, and it has worked fine ever since.

I can’t get the starter out of my 1996 Road King. I loosened the two 1/4” bolts and remove the electric cables. It simply will not come out! What am I doing wrong? Do I have to do something on the primary side?
@fixedmyharley2637
@fixedmyharley2637 2 жыл бұрын
Probably yes. Is your bike a 5 speed? The video I made applies to 6 speed transmissions. The 5 speeds have a nut that is accessible only by taking the primary cover off.

Don't replace your starter, paying 500.00 for a new one . Fix you old starter for way cheaper . All balls sells starter clutch ( 65.00 ) for it and ebay sells solenoid parts (24.00) If brushes go bad they can be found also.

I have no idea how you could have found a starter for only $125. (not at your hyperlink) Everywhere I look they cost over $300. (except 2 at J&P for $267 & $260) Many starters are over $400, especially chrome. (J&P, Revzilla, Dennis Kirk, etc)
