Because I would like it done right, when I bought the car it had aftermarket front air struts and they were already failing. It also had “new” aftermarket valve cover gaskets that leaked within the first 1,000 miles and leaked all over an oxygen sensor and ruined an expensive oxygen sensor. Do it once, do it right, don’t have to do it again. If the factory valve cover gaskets lasted 120,000 miles, why wouldn’t I go with factory? lol obviously this is a free country, do what you want with your car but I’d like to get another 120,000 miles out of the parts I put on my car.

NO..... DONT......... I had nearly 5K (extended warranty paid like $3200) of work done on mine at what seemed like a reputable shop and they didn't fix half of what they said they did and some of what they did fix they did an incredibly poor job of. didn't fix the oil leak anywhere near properly so it continued to leak and killed my 02 censor. ultimately when I brought it back to them they said they just couldn't figure out what is wrong with the car and told me to take it to Lexus... now I have a lawsuit in order after this was exposed by Lexus and the inspector that came out to look at my car for the extended warranty company... fortunately my extended warranty company is paying another 3 grand but they simply aren't going to pay for things they already did that weren't done, which is completely fair. last time I came out of pocket $1200, this time I'm coming out $4850.. Don't be an idiot, these cars are far too sophisticated for your local shop period, take it to Lexus.

@@KillaLogeFTW I agree, some of these folks are a bit on the keyboard warrior side of things. They don’t really understand, I bought the car and the selling dealer had put in after market valve cover gaskets on it. They leaked. So I went to a local “good” “highly rated” mechanic for only toyota and lexus stuff. They had it and they said “there is nothing leaking” I took the covers off when I got home and ALL the spark plug wells were full of oil. So I haven’t had much luck with aftermarket parts and I haven’t had much luck with independent mechanic shops. So I agree that’s why I have been going to the dealers since.

Hey by the way, just an update; I picked my Lexus up from the dealer one week ago and it is running like an absolute champ. If anything the service guy (Stan) under quoted me & gave me a deal, I truly believe this. I knew one of the struts was particularly bad, but I thought they all were. He told me the other 3 were actually in good shape and likely wouldn’t need to be replaced for a while. I don’t anticipate any issues for a long time & if the brake actuator goes out, my extended warranty has got me! 😏😌 long live Thy Lexus

How is the 600 holding up? Looking at getting one myself and im aware of the issues shared between them and the 460. Engines on the 600 tend to be a lot less strained cause of the electric motor, but the suspension goes out faster from the added weight.

Thank you for your comment! I found that too, mine burned a little oil when I first got it but after a few regular oil changes with good oil the burning stopped. I also noticed when I first got it I had a little timing chain clatter when I would cold start it after sitting for a few days but now that’s all gone too. I wonder if it has to do with the oil quality. Congrats on your purchase I hope it serves you well and keeps you comfortable.

@@gravity5660 hello, thank you for your comment. I use what the manual suggest as far as oil. It is able to take 0-20 or 5-20. I use the 5-20 but the oil itself I have used Mobil 1 high milage and Royal Purple. I change the oil every 5,000 miles with a Lexus/Toyota OEM filter. Some of the newer Toyota/lexus call for 10,000 miles oil change intervals. I think that is just too long so I opt for the safer route of 5,000 miles.

@@Mabeylater293 mine is a 2008 bought it with 138000 miles from the original owner. Front struts were blown. You can follow the decision/rehab over on in8mud. But surprisingly trouble free so far. But I bought it to be a second vehicle.

The 08 es is the same car with the Toyota avalon, just more bells and whistles. The LS is a much more refined car, my uncle had a 07 LS and i loved driving one. I know i can afford it now at 6k, but i cant afford the maintenance and gas. I also drove a 07 lexus es, its a big difference in comfort and power.

I’ve got a rav4 that has 190,000 miles on it and the dash never melted, the, center console lid looks brand new, the drip rails aren’t peeling. I’m documenting getting an LS460 sorted and keeping it that way. I didn’t have the car repainted or the wheels refinished, I had items that should never have been “bad” in the first place fixed. Who wants to spend $4,000 on air suspension repairs on a car that has hand prints and dust glued to their sticky dash? If you are getting the day to day operational repairs of a car that is cosmetically in worse shape than a 190,000 mile rav4? I personally wouldn’t want to drive a car around that runs good but is otherwise in roughy shape, that sort of takes away desire to keep doing the mechanical repairs. I hope that makes sense.

Actually it costed less than a new Camry lol I like Camry's too I owned one for several years but they are not even comparable to Lexus when it comes to the prestige and so on, one of the only ways you really can compare them is for instance they both have fantastic motors.. Thanks for the comment, yes, it is definitely a costly car to keep on the road. I’m not sure if I’d attribute all costs to maintenance, a good part of the cost was attributed to cosmetic stuff, the door panels, the dash, the center console lid, the two colored strips across the roof, the mirrors, the tint etc were a pretty large part of it. Which could have been less costly if I had gotten one without all those bits in need of refurbishment or just left them as is but I absolutely agree even with those crossed out, things like the air shocks and bushings and such have been quite a costly experience. These cars are known for more issues too, I’m sure at some point I’ll have the infamous “valley pan gasket leak” and there are eventually issues with the brake actuator and stereo amplifier etc. The LS also for some odd reason doesn’t have floating from calipers so over time when the brake rotors slightly start to warp, you feel that MUCH sooner than other cars and you feel the vibrations and so I’ve gone thru a couple sets of front rotors too. @@francislim6516 The phoenix tesla style radio has worked fine. I installed it around 2019 and it works just as great currently. I had to replace the amp with a aftermarket. Due to multiple replacement mark Levinson amps continuing to fail.

Thank you for your comment. I didn’t delete the clip, the clip is on the furthest back upper point of the door panel and clips the top of the door panel to the sun shade. There is a little metal clip that has teeth digging into the door panel and it slipped off and fell into the hole in the sun shade. That hole is into the track for that sun shade. So I used some needle nose pliers and retrieved the clip. The sun shade worked. The replacement door panel had the clip already on the panel, but I removed it, squashed it a little tighter and put it back on to make sure it stays on the door panel. So the clip is there, it’s just no longer fallen off in the track for the shade. I hope that makes sense.

Thank you for your comment! I agree for now, I think though the 2013-2017 seems more reliable to this point, I’m interested though as time passes how they will hold up. For example just a few days ago I got a TSB notice about the brake actuator in my 2017 LS. So that tells me the brake actuator issue that occurred in the 2007-2012 cars wasn’t resolved in the 2013-2017 cars, it makes me wonder what else will come up. I’m sure the valve spring issues and melty bits were hopefully actually resolved but I’m sure the soft bushings are still there and the valley pan gasket leaks are still going happen and other headaches that happen with the newer ones. It’s funny you mention the LS400, I had a friend that had a 1990 LS400, although they are quite old now and probably hard to get some parts for, I loved their LS400 it was so simple, and that unique gauge cluster and clean basic interior is just pure car.

That seems like a good deal on that LS430. The only thing I’d make sure is if it had a clean inspection from a trusted mechanic. That low of miles the shocks could be leaking, seals and gaskets could be leaking. The LS had 120,000 miles on it when I got it and now, as of yesterday it has over 170,000 on it. I bought it used at a lexus dealership. I honestly don’t remember which one.

@@RKG5A5 I don’t remember how much mine cost, I just had the lowers done on mine. If you are looking to DIY it and want OEM parts it can’t hurt to gooogle longo lexus parts. They usually have some percentage off, it’s free to check their price online. I hope that helps.

Thanks for your comment. I hope to make it past the 200,000 mile mark I don’t know about an extra 200,000 miles haha. I really did want things done right and done right the first time. I went to an independent shop that sent me on my way with leaking valve cover gaskets and my spark plug tubes all filled with oil so it’s hard to trust an independent shop at least with a dealer if they screw up on something it’s an easier path of recourse. As for the expenses it’s been cheaper than buying a new one and because the depreciation has already taken place, I don’t worry as much when I take the car places, a Little Rock chip or bit of wear here and there doesn’t worry me as much, it’s nice just to drive it like an old worn out car. I just hit 180,000 miles today. I hope you get a car you want!

That’s my thoughts exactly. If the first air strut lasted nearly 100,000 miles why wouldn’t the replacement? 😄 I also did bring the car to a local independent shop because the car wasn’t running right and I could smell burning oil. I had removed a stick coil and the well for the spark plug was full. So I drove it to this independent lexus specialist and they told me they don’t see any issues. So I don’t trust these small shops. I don’t trust the bigger ones but at least I have some recourse when you have a brand name behind them. I have someone I can complain to if things don’t go right. For example I’ve been bringing it to Longo Lexus and penske owns longo. I can complain to penske if I don’t get satisfaction from longo and if I don’t get satisfaction there I can take the complaint to Lexus.

The reason the Wizard couldn't work on it is because he didn't have the Lexus software to reset it, he said he could if he had the software but he worked on so few Lexus (Lexi) it wasn't worth the $2000 a year for the software subscription he'd have to pay. It wasn't highly technical it was just not having all the tools and this tool for specialized software that every car maker has and each one charges a pretty penny to use it by subscription.

@DM-sg3cj Sounds good. Thanks for this information about having the software to work on this specific Lexus. You have a lot of dishonest technicians who will cheat the customer instead of being honest with them. If you don't know your vehicle, especially if you have an expensive luxury car, people will just think they could get over. The auto technician that owns Omega in Kansas, he is probably one of the best mechanics I have seen on youtube. The Car Care Nut channel he works on a lot of Toyota vehicles lexus as well on KZfaq.

@@MrT-nh6di Care Care nut and Wizard are pretty good, I use to work on cars (not for a living) but I'm old now and I don't want to unless it's something quick. So I have a young(er) mechanic right down the road that is honest, the town I'm in is very small and a bad rep gets around fast. The nearest Lexus dealer to me is over 130 miles away. so far my guy has been very good and very reasonable compared to the "big city" prices. I'm shocked by some of the price quotes I see on these channels for repairs and parts that should be a fraction of the cost ... I mean sure it's a Lexus but 99% of the parts you get say Toyota on them and at the end of the day a Lexus is nothing more than a Toyota with a prom dress on and they are no harder to work on than a Toyota.

One of my mirrors didn’t fold at all so I replaced that one and decided to do the other too. I’m on the fence with the air struts, I just recently had my 2017 in for service and the rear spring struts are seeping already at 37,000 miles, if the original air struts lasted nearly 100,000 miles, that’s better than the non air struts, at this rate I’d have to replace the struts twice on my 2017 non air ride car. I don’t mean any disrespect by that, I just think anything with an expensive car can be a headache, I’m just glad it’s not a BMW. I had a 2016 BMW I had bought brand new and it was broken all the time in the short 10 months I owned it. This LS even with its little issues I’d trust it to go anywhere.

Have they done the interior stuff? 2007-2012 all were affected by the interior stuff, all had bushing issues 2007-2017, if you haven’t done anything but basic maintenance and the original owner didn’t have any of that done I’m impressed.

@@alexsystems2001 interior had a recall all the way through 2020, that was done at a dealership for free. Other then that just regular maintenance, controls where done at 100k havent been an issue.

I was honestly considering the coils and shocks but I figured the originals lasted the first 120,000 miles and 14 years that I’d just go like for like and cross my fingers they last. My 2017 has coils and shocks, it’s a superb ride so I’d imagine it would be a good ride on this one too with the conversion. I still haven’t played with those rear door buttons yet. My original door panels had those buttons but I never played with them before. I just never really have anyone in the back seat and when they are they just open the arm rest and manually adjust their seat. This car still has the original actuator so I’m preparing financially for that smack over my head 😅 I’m not looking forward to it, I’m also not looking forward to the possible valley pan leak in the future. I noticed over the now 45,000 miles I’ve put on the car that I have lost just a little bit of coolant, not much, but I’m pretty sure it’s leaking in the valley, just not enough to spend for the exploratory work yet. ​@@alexsystems2001 Im surprised you were able to go that long without a major valley leak. Even if the gaskets were installed right, they would leak a little bit. I believe lexus covered the actuator replacement for 2007-2011/2012 models up to a number of years. I believe your potential claim expired already. Anytime you find a TSB/LSB online, make sure you download it because Toyota scours the internet to try to delete them from public knowledge. You can tell when your actuator is about to go out. Listen to a pump noise in front of the driver side under the hood, if you hear a pumping noise every 1-2 mins or less (often 20 seconds), chances are the actuator is leaking and the brake pump has to continually pump. Long term running of a failed actuator will cost the brake pump to fail as well as it has to continually run to pressurize the actuator. It's a very easy diagnostic that most mechanics miss.

I think I’d feel the same way. Hopefully you can go back? That’s been my worry about going aftermarket on some things. I figure the first set of air struts lasted 14 years, even if it’s $6,000 and I get another 14 years, that’s cheaper than a new Lexus LS. You have a beautiful car, I hope you get your hiccup sorted and are no longer disappointed.

I have a 2011 AWD short wheel base without the air suspension. I find the car suspension handles beautifully. It's like driving on a cloud. So, is the air suspension that much better?

@@alexsystems2001 I'm enjoying the car, that's for sure! Lexus is certainly reliable, but reliability is a base-level concern. I've never been stranded. When I had lights on my dash, it was for the airbag (taken care of), missing TPMS sensors (taken care of), and no brake wear sensors (taken care of). But to help ensure the lifespan of the car and keep the driving experience elevated... it takes a bit of work and investment. For example, and you know this, you don't go with cheap tires. They'll wear out fast and they drive like a rock. I got some Control Contact Sport SRS Continentals last year... and this thing drives like a cloud! I finally got the transmission serviced a couple of weeks ago... and what a difference that makes! So yes, they can be reliable for a minimum standard of transportation, but I want more out of my experience with it, so that takes some more resources. Could be worse though. I could have a bunch of Mercedes or BMW electrical issues.

That’s sort of understandable but they won’t get cheaper to repair over time, the ones that are out there right now will just need more work over time so if you have your heart set on one, I’d get the newest one needing the least amount of work.

It depends. On the last road trip I took it on I averaged about 24 MPG on my commute I get around 22 MPG and if it is around town city driving I get about 19 MPG. The best MPG I have gotten on one tank has been about 26 MPG.

@@alexsystems2001Thanks. I dwindled down an offer to $9700 for a 2007 Lexus LS 460. 140K miles. But very well-maintained. Hardly any scratches at all. Good deal? Drives very smooth. I assume these cars won't depreciate that much more in value going in forward.

I agree, that’s why I was willing to put in the money to make it nice, it was good “base” like the paint was good and the engine had regular oil changes and all the electronical stuff worked so it wasn’t the worst starting point. You sound like me with my 2017 and 2007. 😄 enjoy! It’s a last of its kind. I have gotten the LS500 as a loan car a few times and they aren’t anything like this.

I’m pretty tall and the new LS500 doesn’t have the headroom, the air suspension seemed a little harder, the rear seat legroom felt like it was less than the ES loan cars I’ve gotten, things like the center console were as hard as a rock, the loan car had the air suspension and mark levinson and the bass just doesn’t hit as hard either however to it’s credit the road noise was actually quieter which was good and the fuel economy was a little bit better, it also got up and went a little peppier than these. I’m just a fan of the old soft plushness and large everything of the old ones. If you do get one, check back in and tell me how you think it compares. I’d like to hear a differing opinion.

I'm pretty sure they do - I've been looking at used LS 460/500's. And in the sales pages for the cars some show a manufacturer's door plate that clearly says "GERMANY". IDK the whole car, just the drivetrain, only the body, or what part but one things certain, Lexus does or at least used to, have the LS's made in Germany.

You are absolutely correct, but what repairs would that car need? I saw a 2013 for cheap from a Lexus dealer but I started looking into the service history and it went back a zillion times for electrical issues. You really don’t know what can of worms you are opening with any car. At this stage my car is “caught up” and from here going forward i take care of issues that arise.

My 2017 with 37,000 miles on it, I was out washing it last weekend and I was cleaning the wheels… the shocks are leaking 😅 I’ve never had a car with less than 100,000 miles have leaky shocks.

dont do it, this car is a turd! i used to be a harcore lexus fan, i had 2 regular IS's, 2 GS300's, a GS450h and a GS430 and currently an ISF and a LS460. never had any issues with any of those except the LS460. Air suspension broke, its sitting on coils now, the transmission is slowly going out, brake actuator, seized brake calipers, control arms, the active cruise control doesnt work at the moment and just today my water pump started making noises. Go for an older LS430 or 400, they would be more reliable than a 460 with half the miles and dont have a melting interior

@@bdmr_isf if you don’t mind me asking, why are your symptoms of the transmission slowly going out? I had a bump to my transmission when I got mine and one TCM update later it fixed it.

@@alexsystems2001 harsh shifts from first to third gear and when its fully warmed up i get that torque converter shudder at low rpm when driving slowly uphill. didnt try the Transmission update yet, but doubt it will fix it. i already did 2 oil+filter changes (dropped the AT pan).

I looked up part number 48010-50153 it’s an air strut… Longo Lexus is $1,546.92 and Bell Lexus is $1,559.60. Bell is $12.68 more than Longo. Thank you for your suggestion though.

Well, I maybe I think of reliable on subjective grounds lol I had a 2016 BMW I bought brand new, I got rid of it around the 10,000 mile mark after having only had it for 10 months. So much stuff broke… this on the other hand, the original owners for the most part neglected it, made it to 120,000 miles, I took care of all the stuff they put off and now I’m at 170,000 miles and have only had regular services for the last 50,000 miles. So from my headache I had with a BMW this car is a wonderfully reliable thing. It’s certainly not as cheap to keep on the road as a Toyota Camry or something of that nature but I also think it’s not as bad as some of its European counterparts. I also think other brands some that have switched to CVT’s and such, Nissan for example have transmission failures at the 60-80,000 mile mark, Subarus for a long time had head gasket failures, Toyota Camrys had head bolt failures and piston ring failures etc so I think it’s a roll of the dice for long term reliability. I dunno.

"Transmission gave out around 154k" I've only owned one small Toyota, but what I realised was my BMW, Audi, Ford, Vauxhall, Alfa, Merc, VW driving colleagues were having more problems at 50-60k miles, than I was at 175k miles! And don't get me started on my brother's Porsche. I told him not to buy one, but older brothers never listens to wiser, younger brothers, do they!

Wow, is your glass half empty too? 😄 I think I have 167,000 miles on it now, some people had the brake issue at 40,000 miles some people never had it. Just like with the valve spring replacement, some people needed new heads too and some didn’t. So I’ll worry about that when I gotta worry about it.

That’s kind of an assumption lol some people do bring their car to the dealer or mechanics not for a lack of tools. For me it’s a mixture of things between lack of time, lack of desire and lack of wanting to fuss with the stuff and not having a warranty on my own repairs. Heck when I replaced my door panels I had a plastic clip break on one of the window switches, fortunately I found a good used one online but that just makes the job cost more money, it makes the job take longer and it’s a pain. For example when I bring it to the dealer like I did when I just had the lower control arms done, they accidentally gouged a grease boot on the steering knuckle. They put a whole new part in free of charge. I didn’t have to eat that. Or when they put the dash in, they forgot to hook up a tweeter, I took it back and they reconnected the tweeter. I like that I just don’t have to deal with it. If you follow my channel, I remodeled my whole master bathroom, I’m capable, but I work for a living and it’s not working on cars haha there are people that do that for a living and I’ll let them do that. I hope that makes sense. It has nothing to do with a lack of tools or even a lack of knowing how to do something, even skilled mechanics screw something up from time to time. It’s just I don’t want to and I am getting a fair deal.

I do understand. I have 5 kids and the provider $ for the family. Time is not on my side. Jack of all trade master of none here. I have been interested in getting a LS460. I have a LX450. Totally different animal. Anyway, you covered about all of the issues those cars have. I’m not shy about changing struts or control arms. I need to save as much money as I can.
