The Lexus LS460 is one of the Most expensive Lexus models to repair and own! I always mentioned that you should be careful with LS460s as they can get very expensive to repair.
Today we take a look at a beautiful 2011 Lexus LS460 with only 70k miles that is in the shop for a lot of expensive repairs and in what I call the LS460 Pile up when repairs turn into more repairs. And at the same time we have a much older LS430 with double the miles and half the issues.

I also went with a Camry…. 2005 V6, since it was a top pick of the Car Care Nut in a past video. Couldn’t be happier. Maintenance is next to nothing, parts are cheap and it’s super easy to DIY service. I’ve had several newer cars in the past and this one always surprises me how smooth and comfortable it is considering its age. Best part is I got it for $4k from a private seller.

@@riceburner4747 I'd agree if somebody wants a decent sized car. Grateful my dad got the 06 Camry new which I still drive. I was going to post a comment myself before seeing yours. Hope the newer ones are still reliable and the hybrid battery warranty going forward gives hope. I think the overall size of the Camry is decent enough on safety, unless you encounter some really dumb motorists.

So if you'd like a little guidance my mother is 71 and on her own. Currently she has some (2016/2017ish) Infiniti wagon I don't really care for but it is hers and she pays for it so I keep my lips zipped about it in order to not offend her. Lately she has talked about dipping her toes in and looking around for a "new" used car and I have made a few suggestions based on her past vehicles.. I have also helped her years ago pick out a few of them.. but she has gotten a bit headstrong these last several years or so. The current suggestions that I have made for her within her budget are the Lexus RX as well as the ES model, the Avalon, Camry, Rav4, Highlander (too big she says and what I actually drive) and the Venza within the last ten years and to look for mileage around 60-80k ish or less.. also verify meticulous maintenance and other records on anything she is serious. I will help her only if she asks. I even suggested to look into the hybrid models of some of those I just listed and she doesn't seem too keen on any of those except she said she does does like the looks of the Toyota CHR which I personally wouldn't recommend. I have also suggested the Corolla Cross which just isn't flashy enough for her taste, it's a grandma car she says. In addition I go for the v6 models (namely the 2grfe engine) and I also prefer all wheel drive, just my personal preference. Hope that helps you out in your quest, I only give my two cents as a middle aged son looking out for his mom. Good luck.

I'm like you. I'm a retired nurse, I'm not a mechanic, I have a very good friend who is a mechanic and owns his own shop, like Amd. He has three full-time mechanics working for him. I own an 07 Toyota Avalon, so now, 17 years later, I still love it like it was new. I'll never sell it. What keeps me engaged in Amd's videos is his presentation. The information is given to us in relatable terms, which is very helpful when communicating with my mechanic. I understand him, and I am better able to get accurate information to him. The series on the 600k mile Lexus keeps me glued to the screen. Sometimes, I have to chuckle. You think, ok, he's got something wrapped up, but no, wait a minute, there's something else. If Amd does fix everything, it will be a brand new car.😊

@unavailable4466 Hello, the car had 75K miles when I purchased it in 2015. From 2015 until I retired it in 2024, I drove it 60% city and 40% highway miles. I did live in a rural area in SC. My commute to work was 55 miles one way. That and I lived 27 miles outside of the city. I've driven that vehicle From SC to NY and all the way down to Daytona, FL. What I did do is use Mobil 1 full synthetic oil as soon as I purchased it. That and keeping it tuned up was my saving grace. I did have the lower control arms replaced but that's it as far as Maintenance.

I'm a huge fan of TCCN, and I just purchased a 2014 LS460, knowing well what I was getting into. I spent hundreds of hours of research on the ClubLexus forums, watching AMD's videos, and looking for the perfect car with an excellent service history for almost a year. I had 2 sold out from under me, and I'm glad, because the one I ended up with is much better. 85k miles, all OEM control arms and 60k service done, all other services performed at a Lexus dealer, and I even had a different Lexus dealer perform my PPI. They found the valley plate leaking, so I used that to get the price lowered on the car. When the advisor told me that despite that, it was a beautiful well-maintained car and that he'd himself buy it, I went for it. It's going to Lexus to have the heat exchanger leak repaired, and I know what it costs. I'm also getting a transmission drain/fill since it's never been done, with my advisor saying "it's lifetime, Lexus doesn't recommend it, but I'll do it if you want." AMD says every 60k, that's what I do. I've done it on my 11 ES 350 and have 198k trouble free miles. I only wish I lived closer to his shop, so I could have him do all my work. I'll keep dailying the ES as my trusty, fuel-efficient, and reliable car. The LS will be a weekend and every now and then treat to drive. AMD, can you do a video on the brake actuator/pump/relay failure? Lexus has extended the warranty to 10yrs/150k miles on these. I'm still covered until November this year. That's another $2500 repair. I call all these items the Big 3: Control arms, valley plate leak, and brake actuator. Get past those and you've got the worst of things knocked out.

Bought a used 2010 ES a few years ago with 85,000 miles. It's been absolutely flawless. I have put a little over 52,000 miles on it and wouldn't hesitate to get another. Would love to get an LS but couldn't afford the repairs. My daughter has a 2012 Camry with a v6. My Lexus is much smoother and quieter but the Camry is just as reliable.

Great video, Amd. The last time I went looking for a different car, I had an 03 Lincoln Town Car. Beautiful car, but I had always wanted a Lexus. I was 120 miles from home at a Toyota dealership. I had been looking at two Lexus cars online, an 04 LS 430, and a RX 350. I never made it to either Lexus. I spotted an 07 Avalon Touring car. I was in love. Needless to say, we made a deal, and I drove home in my Avalon. After a few weeks, I was questioning my decision and began thinking I'd keep it two or three years and trade it for a Lexus. Well, all these years later, I still have my Avalon, her name is Blue, and she's part of the family. She's been incredibly dependable, normal maintenance, and that's it. She's just over the 93k mile mark now. I'm retired, so I'm not putting as many miles on her as I did when I was working. I still get the urge to buy a Lexus, but common sense wins out. Blue will be the last car I own. When I'm done driving, I will pass her down to someone in the family. I'm a little partial to her, but I think she's barely broke in, and there's probably another 300k miles left in her as long as she's cared for the way I do. Oil and filter, along with tire rotation every 3k miles, I've done it that way from day one. All the other maintenance gets done by the owners' manual recommendations. I just love that car.

I had a 08 LS460. While it was great during my ownership, the control arms were going at around 90k miles and was going to cost $3500 or so to replace at an independent mechanic and $5500 at the dealer. The interior was also melting which was another issue with these cars. Those issues aside though, the car was great.

Lexus had a warranty “enhancement” program where a lot of people got their melted dashboards replaced for free. I have about 186,000 miles on mine, it’s pretty well looked after but I can attest, there have been $10,000 service visits. Even if you buy a nice one, at some point you will experience an expensive service visit. In the next few weeks I need a new rear mark levinson subwoofer, that’s gonna be expensive. The only thing that doesn’t work is the rear defroster, the glass has power, the whole circuit works but somehow the glass is defective, I haven’t done it yet because I live in SoCal I need a defroster maybe twice a year, that can wait. Other than that, if something is broken, it gets fixed, and it gets fixed with OEM parts at a dealer.

My elderly neighbors across the street own a 97 LS400. That thing is in mint condition. One day it was sitting outside their house and I was asking what was wrong. It was the alternator. They said they had a couple recalls on it but other than that alternator going out, it didn't have many issues. They said it had a leak but their mechanic said just to keep an eye on the fluid levels and it should be OK. So they decided not to fix anything. And it's still going. They also have a 2001 RX 300 that he said they had no problems with. Then a couple layers later the air conditioner unit went out. But that was it. They kept saying they would look at new cars every once in a while but couldn't find anything as comfortable. That's when I told my parents to look at Lexus when they were looking at new cars in 2020. My dad got the ES 350 and Mom got the NX 300. Both leased. Mom decided to purchase her NX since car prices are crazy and dad bought a new 23 RX 350. Anyone looking into buying a used car, I tell them to look at Lexus!

AMD, I feel you are asking a rhetorical question but if you really want an answer - LS 430. 😉 It sounds like the most expensive car in the whole Lexus /Toyota universe is a cheap LS 460.

I owned an LS430 and loved it but I next went to an ES because I heard so many bad things regarding the LS460. Looks like I made the right call.

Glad I've watched your LS460 videos. For a while I was seriously considering buying a 2010ish model. Now I'm aiming more towards the GS350 awd models.

We JUST bought a 2008 Lexus LS460 RWD 103k originally from Atlanta & was previously owned by a telecom CEO. All service records from new, hopefully it isn’t a dud lol Will be going to you for our first service!

I have that specific car in RWD. 2011 LS 460 RWD with Sport Package. I bought this over a Mercedes/BMW for all the reasons you always talk about. I did my research and bought one with the control arms already done, as well as the leak in the engine valley, in other words, I did my research BUT...I hadn't come across your page. I feel like I bought a good one, and I'm still pretty sure I need to get rid of it soon after watching LS-related videos. Since ownership, I've lost the trunk actuator (replaced it myself, there's a guy on ebay who rebuilds them), the column tilt/telescoping is out, and it has a voltage leak that kills the battery after a few days. On the place side, drives great, handles well, power settings and air suspension work but now, all I can think of...is when? When is the big bill coming?

@@michesbianan you are not wrong. The problem is when I drive the car I love it. So far it's been manageable but I'm likely selling it and not buying another highway battle wagon.

Great video as always, with your help I have been DIY lexus for years, ( LS430,GS350,LS460 )one thing I do is take of the PLASTIC covers off the engine they retain all the heat over the engine ,except the air intake on the front to keep air cooler, I find the plastic fittings don't go hard, also easy to see around the engine bay, one bonus you can hear the wonderful V8 a bit better
