Balljoints fail in all kinds of different ways. Most times you can feel the play by shaking the wheel. Sometimes you only see the play by using a prybar between the lower control arm and the steering knuckle. Sometimes there's no play but it's seizing up. These will make a squeak/squawk when turning the steering wheel back and forth when stationary. And sometimes the whole balljoint can pop out of the control arm itself!
In general I do not like pressing balljoints into stamped steel control arms. There usually is so little material to press the balljoint into that I don't feel comfortable with it. I always prefer replacing the whole arm. They're usually not that expansive anyways. When I do replace just the balljoint in steel arms I'll put some of the green Permatex Sleeve Retainer compound on the knurled section of the balljoint. It's just that little extra to make you feel more comfortable.
Also thrown in is a few tips for changing these lower control arms on a 2007 Nissan Sentra. They are a bit of a pain to do.
