The first couple of times I changed oil in my 2009 highlander I did what is shown in this video including removing the small screw in plug, and pushing in the plastic drain plug with a drainage hose. As the video shows, while this procedure is intended to remove the oil remaining in the filter metal housing, some still remains in there and pushing in the drain plug / hose in results in some mess running around hose, etc. I have stopped removing the small plug and O-ring, and now just remove the entire metal cap with the plug still intact. I have done this for the past 10 oil changes, and have not had any leak problems. These O-rings don't normally go bad, if they are not taken apart, and I have not had any leaks. When I remove the cap with plug intact I do tend to spill a little over the top, but again, I don't think doing it this way is any more messy than trying to insert the plastic drain plug. Also, every time you remove that small plug and put it back in, you always run the risk of stripping threads or the o-ring not seating. So, in my opinion, removing the plug / o-ring is a useless step.

Why would you run the risk of stripping treads on the oil filter cap drainplug? I mean really? It only gets tightened to 9 lb.ft. ?
@MrALBOBALBOB
@MrALBOBALBOB 4 жыл бұрын
@@njsongwriter by "stripping threads" on the small plug, I meant not over tightening but rather "cross threading". I should also add that wrote the above post 3 years ago, and now have a 2015 highlander in addition to the 2009 highlander. the 2015 Highlander has exactly the same set up. I do not remove the plug / hook up drain hose on it either.

I work at toyota as a mechanic...just wanted to point out... 1. replaced the drain plug gasket, if its over tighten/used to much, it can leak from the drain plug gasket. 2. it takes 6.4 quarts of oil. you dont want to starve the motor from oil. other then that..you did it

3) The drain hose attached to the plastic drain tool (@ 2:16) is optional and pretty much unnecessary unless you're outside and the wind is blowing. It's a straight shot down for the little bit of oil to drain from the filter and you're going to get oily hands regardless as the video shows (@ 2:40).

After my last oil change, I decided to spend the $16.99 and purchase the "Assenmacher" specialty tool 'TOY 640' Oil Filter Socket Wrench for Toyota/Lexus. It came in and I did a test fit and it should work perfectly. So no more workarounds that might damage the cannister.

Great video - thanks. Need to emphasize and practice safety - clearly only used floor jack to support vehicle which is bad. Someone recently here in Texas was killed doing this simple job as the vehicle fell on him. Use jack stands or ramps people!

Thanks guys. The Toyota dealer sold me a canister type filter and I could not find it anywhere. Did a Google search and found your great video. I think they went to the paper element for environmental reasons. Less stuff for the land fill and metal filter canisters are not supposed to be disposed of there. 6.4 quarts of oil if you change the filter as well according to my 2009 Highlander manual. Thanks again, great job and very helpful.

4) The video attempts to explain the "extender" that was used to loosen and remove the canister (@ 3:21) with a caption "Use Oil Filter Wrench End Cap". I need to get one of these, but since I didn't have one , I was able to lightly tap the canister using the long screw driver and loosen the canister by hand.

Did the oil change and it worked but I think it would be good to put some oil like 3/4 into the filter canister before putting it back on. I didn’t do that like the video shows and upon startup it made a nasty grinding sound!! I didn’t get to try it out to see if it fixes the sound but I’ll find out the next time!

Thanks for the information! BTW, Our 2008 Highlander has a push button start, so I'm not sure how to reset the oil maintenance warning, since your description requires turning a key. I'll figure it out, but first to head to AutoZone and get the oil and filter and filter wrench. Also, thanks for your Service, and a big War Eagle to whoever put up the Auburn flag on the wall!

2) The video does not show how it can be difficult to loosen the "bottom part" separately from the canister itself (@ 2:01) (Toyota instructions refer to "Remove oil drain plug from center of filter housing cap.") I had to use a long screw driver inserted from the right front wheel well against one of the canister tabs to keep it from turning while I loosened the center/bottom part with a 3/8" socket extension.
@njsongwriter

The reason this happens is because the last person did not follow the torque specs. The drainplug on the oil filter cap should only be half as tight as the oil filter cap is. Oil filter cap = 18 lb.ft. Oil filter cap drainplug = 9 lb.ft.

1) You may not notice that the front of the vehicle was raised for this job, but the video shows the floor jack later on. Unless you're skinny and a contortionist, most will need to raise the vehicle for this job. This doesn't cause any problems with draining the oil given the placement of the drain plug faces the rear of the vehicle.

It doesn't help that K&N sells typical thread on canister for the '08 Hylander, which I had in hand for the oil change. Fortunately it fit my 4Runner so there was no loss on my beahalf. Now, I have a question. First, why do you use pain old Valvoline? That oil messed my 2007 Rav4 up (Synthetic wins, hands down) It had the same engine as this Highlander. Second, why does your V6 use that much oil and my 2010 RAV4 V6 only uses 5 1/4 quarts? Do the Highlanders have a larger oil pan? It would have to. These 2gr cams need the perfect amount of anti wear agents or the cam shaft gear assembly will fail...conventional oils do Not have the proper amount of anti wear agents and oil charts and analysis will show this. Just thought I'd share.

Everyone who has this system should be prepared for a worse case scenario especially if this is the first time you're doing this. In case of a Stuck Oil Filter Make sure you have the following... 1. The proper Motivx* oil filter cap wrench. Item #MX2320 us for all Toyota/Lexus/Scion engines 2.0 liters and larger using a cartridge style oil filter or item #MX2321 is for all engines smaller than 2.0 liters using a cartridge style filter. 2. A 27 mm ½ inch drive socket 3. A ½ drive breaker bar (18 inches or longer in length. An extension may be needed for some models.) If an oil filter cap seems difficult to remove, only the above items should be used (or equivalent tools). Do not simply use a ⅜ inch drive ratchet or ratchet with extension as these will sometimes result in breakage of the oil filter cap wrench or the oil filter cap. Always make sure the teeth on the wrench are properly engaged with the tabs on the oil filter cap. To prevent reoccurrence of the problem •Make sure new o-rings are properly lubricated before installing. •Use a torque wrench to install the oil filter cap to no more than 18 ft.lbs (25 N•m). Oil filter drainplug = 9 ft.lbs. (12.5 N•m) * If you think the Motivx tools are too expensive at least consider the following... Do not buy an oil filter cap wrench that is made from cast aluminum. Only buy one that is forged. Do not buy one that is strictly a cap wrench that does not have teeth. Do not buy one that claims to fit all models or even all four cylinders. The 2.0 and 2.5 liter four cylinder engines use the same oil filter cap wrenches as the six and eight cylinder engines use. Only the 1.8 and 1.3 liter engines use a different size oil filter cap and oil filter cap wrench. If the oil filter for your four cylinder vehicle comes with one o-ring instead of two then your vehicle takes the same wrench as a Prius or Corolla (unless it's a six cylinder). If your oil filter comes with two o-rings & a service pipe for draing the fikter then your oil filter cap takes the same wrench as the six and eight cylinder engines. Some companies claim their wrench works for all four cylinders but on the 2.5 liter engines that smaller wrench does not engage the teeth on the wrench to the tabs on the oil filter cap. It may work if your oil filter cap is not stuck but it is a poor choice. They are mislead. For those that don't believe this is a problem... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jdNdibB60LrbZp8.html

Dealer filter elements are much higher quality than FRAM will ever be. You should be able to get them pretty cheap (a few bucks). Since the dealer filters are made to correct specs as far as flow, micron limitations etc. Your engine will last way longer on the dealer elements. I buy the whole filter for my 3.4 L 4Runner for less than $5 at the local dealer. I just buy 5 at a time. If you are going to own a $30 K car, don't skimp on cheap filters just to save $.50

( so far) Every spring and fall Mobil 1 has a $12 rebate on 5qts. Watch for it. Its worth it. Walmart usually has 5qt jugs on sale for $20-$22 at the same time.

5) Tightening the bottom part with the 3/8" socket extension tightened both the canister and the center piece. 6) As @honda523 mentions, the V6 takes 6.4 quarts when replacing the oil filter. That's 6 quarts and almost 13 ounces in case you're wondering about the 0.4. :-) I've always used the upgraded TRD filter, P/N PTR43-00082 on mine.

Yes but if you tighten the oil filter cap assembly using the ⅜ inch extension then everything comes off together eliminating the ability to drain the oil filter cap before removing it. Best to follow the specs... Tighten oil filter cap to 18 lb ft. using the oil filter cap wrench. Tighten the oil filter cap drainplug with the ⅜ inch extension to only 9 lb.ft. per the instructions that come with the OEM Toyota filter.
