2008 Smart Fortwo 451 Removing Rear Body Panels

I remove the plastic rear body panels including the boot/trunk/tailgate panel on my 2008 Smart Fortwo 451, in preparation for work on the exhaust system and to replace a lambda probe/oxygen sensor. If undertaking this job it is important to have a T25 Torx screwdriver/socket.

Great job ! I don’t understand why when people work on the motor they think it’s hard to take off the rear panel and lower the motor you made it seem routine 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I am watching this because I need to replace my muffler. I already removed the bad one. The flex pipe rusted off so I pushed a small pipe up into it, secured it with a muffler clamp, and then wrapped a hose clamp around it and tightened it to keep it in place and to pass inspection. It was still working over a year later, but I just want to do the job proper and bought a muffler on Amazon for 200 dollars. I will attempt to get the new muffler on without taking the body panel off, however thanks for this video. I may need to or want to remove the panel just to make the job easier.

Can the center panel under the lower boot door between the rear wings come of on it's own? Without the removal of the wings

Once the rear section is off it can be separated as the subsections are held together with barbed clips. Trying to remove it separately in situ is not something I would attempt or recommend.

Enjoy your car but if it is mhd be carefful with the starting generator because cost a fortune to change it and it's a matter of when not if, when will colaps😭 I know because now I have this problem😭 Cost me here in Germany 1300 euro to replace it but not with a new one just with a refulbished one😱

@@lauroprea1053 Djeezusss. Wat a bad luck. Luckily mine is not a MHD. Did have a glitching brakelightswitch. And the rear under engine mount rubber. Got a new one with extra silicone inserts. Does vibrate more stationary. 😊🫠

No criticism from me. I would like to point out, however, one thing. You can easily change the number plate bulbs without removing the panel. No tools required either. It takes seconds.
