2008 Subaru Forester Fuel Tank Removal and Reinstall

My 2008 Subaru Forester Sports 2.5X had an evap leak on top of the tank. There weren't many how to videos on youtube for this topic so I decided to capture my approach. Not a professional mechanic, but I hope this video can be helpful. If I had to do this again - I wouldn't. Cutting a hole in the floor to access these valves is barbaric but that's what I would do. Dropping the tank took 6 hours, reinstalling took 3.

I owe you a huge "THANK YOU." I watched this video repeatedly and swapped the fuel cut valves today. This video a Chilton's manual really helped.

Glad i read the description too, i'm gonna tackle a fuel leak at the filler hose inlet above my subframe. Dropping the rear end with the rust i've got isn't an option, so i'll probably use a sheet metal nibbler or something to cut an access panel.

What part or valve you replaced?

Any idea what the difference is between the tank in the car and the tank in an XT is? Two different part #'s. The STI uses the same tank as the XT, but I'm not sure what the difference is.

Hello, i have the same problem. would it be possible to hole cut out the trunk above the evaporation connections? and then replace them from trunk?

I initially wanted to go that route, but would have had to cut through the tube steel that is where the seats bolt to. Would have been much more invasive than just cutting floor sheet metal like I was initially thinking.

I am in need of your assistance bud. I'm leaking fuel at the yellow elbow at 14:17 is that a separate piece or is it attached to the fuel tank?

also, you didnt show what was wrong. Was it the roll over evap connections or the evap cutoff valve? what needed replacement? many thanks!

One of the rollover valves had a crack in it where it connects to the rubber hose. I replaced both rollover valves.

Damn that’s a lot of work for just changing the steel fuel neck 😩

I don’t believe you need to pull the whole tank just to change the fuel neck. You just need to pull the plastic shield underneath it, disconnect the rubber hose from the steel neck, then you can unbolt the neck and pull it up through the filler flap
