I really appreciate your video Dave. I finally got my steering rack after waiting for five months because of a part shortage of course. I going to attempt the replacement, along with the sway bar bushings, this weekend. Your video, which I've watched a few times now, has given be the boost of confidence I needed to feel like I could do this job without having to spend close to $1000 for a shop to install it. I'll try to update you on how it went. Just wanted to say thank you for posting this and I hope this Sienna is still running strong.

Thank you so much for the kind words and I am delighted the video gave you the confidence to give it a try. As far as the Sienna goes, once our kids were grown and on their own a couple of years ago, my wife decided she didn't really need something the size of that van and wanted to downscale to a RAV4, so we sold it about three years ago. It was running like a champ at that time and I'm sure if someone took care of it, there were tons of miles left in it. Please let us know how it goes!!

DIY Dave Thank You I did this over the weekend, I pushed the stabilizer bar up as far as possible after loosening the link which gave me all the room to get to the driver side bolt and nut that holds the steering rack to the k frame. I loosened the rear most bolt that holds the k frame to the body to give me room to twist the rack to get it out from the driver side opening and you didn’t lie those bolt and nuts holding the rack in are extremely tight this is something I won’t soon forget as I won’t be doing this again. I got the steering shaft free by removing the battery the complete intake box and beat the old rack senseless until it dropped mines I believe has been on my van since new judging by all the rust.

So I'm impressed you stuck with this job it's not the easiest for someone who doesnt work on cars for a living. I am a tech and a couple of hints. Remove the tie rods first not after the rack is out. That also gives you more wiggle room to remove the rack. Another tip we almost always lessen the 2 rear cradle bolts that also gives you more room. The last tip I could give is in some cars you can get a ball joint separator to get the steering shaft broken away. But good job you were able to get that on your own.

Thanks, Justin! I 100% agree that it was a rookie mistake on my part not to remove the tie rods first. I have thought about doing a follow-up video on this project to review some "lessons learned." On the good side, the van has been handling beautifully since the rack replacement. Thanks for the kind words and for watching!!

I have done brakes, Cv-axles, including the dreaded carrier bearing bracket, and front wheel bearings on a 2005 FWD Sienna XLE, but you haven't lived until you've replaced the driver-side transmission output seal for the Cv axle. For that I eventually used parts from my OTC 6575 Hub Grappler kit: forcing screw (555656), adapter (314310), along with two 3/4"-16 nuts (615-072.1 Dorman spindle lock nut), and a 3/4" washer. Then it's hammer time--but gently.

One BIG problem with this great video DIY Dave... you saved the most important information for the last ten minutes of a feature-length video! That's when you realize on the test drive that all your mechanical work may have been wasted because the ABS won't work until you reset the computer. Now imagine my frustration when I watched nearly an hour of your work, found the confidence to do it myself, ordered a steering rack online, and then, just before I got started, watched the last ten minutes to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Now if I can't find the software, I will have to pay $100 to ship the steering rack back and add that to whatever the stealership is going to charge me to fix this. I have googled Toyota Techstrean software and can't find anything on the Internet. Do you have a source? If you don't please put a warning at the BEGINNING of the video. Thank you.
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK 3 жыл бұрын
Fair point - however, the ABS reset wasnt the issue - it was SAS calibration. The ABS often goes offline if SAS sets a code. I believe this can be reset if you disconnect the battery for about ten minutes, the ABS will automatically reset. Also, several OBD tools have a feature to reset the ABS and SAS as well.

Assuming you meant "Techstream," not "Techstrean," eBay has numerous listing for the software and cable. Indeed, one cannot do much DIY on a Toyota or Lexus without this software. For example, diagnosing a failing tire pressure sensor ( for TPMS). A fair criticism of these DIY presentations, is their missing narrative of the tools, software, and chemicals necessary to complete the job from the introduction, something that can be easily added in editing, keeping with Matthew 20:16, "the last shall be first, and the first last" ;) Normally when I do a job, I set the tools and chemicals aside that I used, taking an inventory at the end.
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK Жыл бұрын
I didn't say "TechStrean." I said "TechStream," because I know that's the name of the software. And I've done considerable work on all of the Toyotas I've owned with non-Toyota third-party tools FWIW, even some bidirectional controls with a simple ThinkDiag.

Something I've learned is to line the work area with cardboard, not only does this help sop up any leaking fluid, its more comfortable to lay on and it's easier to slide around while on your back (which stays cleaner to boot). Home Depot and Lowes sell large cardboard moving boxes for cheap so the cost is well worth the benefit.

Dave, I didn't see you verify that the new rack was in the dead center position before installing it, and mating it to the steering column. You could have used the steering wheel lock to center the steering wheel before starting. Very good to point out that spinning the loose steering wheel could ruin the clock spring. Usually the rack input shaft and column shaft spline together in only one position, but you might have been one or more full turns off.
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK 3 жыл бұрын
Jose, that is a fantastic point. I made the natural mistake of assuming the new rack was centered. I should have measured the extend of both ends and ensured they matched. That may well have been the cause of the whole issue! Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching!

Too many complaints from owners of these vehicles from year model 2005-2010 with defective steering racks. There should be a recall from the manufacturer. I've checked the forums and there are literally thousands of owners with this power steering rack issue. Toyota need to recall these vehicles and correct this problem before someone gets hurt, or worse. Very negligent of Toyota, shame on you, you put profit before life and safety. My next vehicle will most definitely be a Honda not Toyota!

Unfortunately, you are correct. The end seals in these racks failed consistently, but I believe Toyota only issued a recall for models up to 2007. I think Toyota is the best vehicle brand out there, but they dropped the ball on this one. Thanks for watching!

Unfortunately I can not paste in a picture of the service manual and parts layout - you will not see O-Rings on the supply and return lines. BTW: I am amazed you were able to insert the camera (LOL) . I had to watch you go through it .. just fun .. I feel your pain ..guess that is why I continued to watch.. No More leftover bolts ...man those are the parts that some people claim were not needed. Yes plenty of fluid is required turn fully side to side lots and lots of times. See my long write up you could have saved some trouble .. I noticed you failed to center the rack before install and you also did the common tie-rod count which is terrible for actually keeping alignment. My method for tie-rod ends to keep alignment works every-time. $2200 at Toyota, 3rd party $1300 and up.

Too bad you weren't around when I did this about four years ago. 🙂. FWIW, there were o-rings on both lines when I took it out and that was the factory installed rack. No question I screwed up on not centering the rack and in the order I took off the tie rods. All part of the learning process. That van continued to serve us exceptionally until we sold it about three years ago.

Just FYI: Your rotors and pads should be replaced - I can see the unevenness in the rotor. Steering wheel should be centered and locked in place before starting , the new rack should also be centered before re-installing. You do not need to remove both sides of the stabilizer bar - only the passenger side. The Steering Rack bolts are 19mm and 17mm you can get to the passenger side nut and loosen that very easily even with the sway bar still in the way - you just can't remove the bolt unless you take the passenger side stabilizer bolts out (and you need to to get the rack out). You should tie wrap the sway bar up out of the way. I removed the lower ball joint on drivers side and pulled the CV Axle (axle was bad and needed to be replaced) - definitely gave more room for me to work. Before taking the outer tierods off just break loose the jam nut - but put it back up against the outer tierod - for the cheater method of perfect alignment when done. My method I know works ..see later on for details.. Given you did not do that - you could use a 3 foot breaker bar and a 22mm crow foot along with a large wrench on the outer tie-rod and use the ground as a holder for the tie-rod side. BTW: A good set of tools is really great to have , cause it can be a pain if not.. You then use a 12mm to remove the steering rack intermediate shaft link, lift it up and off. It should be fairly easy - you might need to insert screw driver in the middle of bolt side and nut side and twist to open the unit up a tad. It should slide off easily. You then use a stubby 17mm (your case 18mm) wrench on the hoses attached to the steering rack, they can be difficult to re-install .. You should not have had an issue with bolts out and loosening the hose fittings - righty tighty , lefty loosey.. you would have been on the downward motion loosening not the lifting motion. You don't need to remove the upper hose clamp - the hose will spin in the line and the fitting will come out. When you pull the rack out - the metal tube hoses that are part of the rack can get in the way which is one reason you need ot turn it to get past the transmission mounting - but make sure you took out the 12mm bolt holding the hose mount on the inner gearbox side and the nut on the passenger side. Don't put the outer tie rods on until the new rack is completely installed. If you have tight stuck bolts - PB Buster - excellent stuff. When you re-install make sure your rack is centered. TieRod end turning and counting - no no no .. that is close but not good enough ... If you want your alignment really close (almost perfect) - loosen jam nut on old rack then finger run it back up against the outer tie rod (then run outer tie rod out and remove - make sure you don't turn your jam nut) - use a caliper to measure the end of the inner tie rod to the jam nut. On the new rack put your new nut at that same distance and add tie rod. Tighten Jam nut. Repeat for the other side. Mine took about 3 hours to remove. A Couple hours on installation. What took the longest was re-installing the hoses must have been about 1 hour or so with those (BTW: there are no o-rings on a 2006 - see the service manual for details - only your left and right turn pressure tubes have them and should have already been installed ) . I did use power tools for parts of mine especially once I broke things loose - a good cordless dewalt impact tool - makes getting ties off very quick. Makes removing the CV bolt a breeze, Then the things I could get to - much faster. This is the second rack I have done and by far the Sienna is a piece of cake compared to a 95 Honda , I would say anyone with a 95 accord pay a shop its well worth it @ $800- I would have rather done the transmission on that Honda.

The next repair I was going to do was to replace the left front CV axle but we sold it before that became necessary.

Thanks for making this and for the helpful information. I was curious how your power steering pump is holding up. We have had a torn boot for about 7 years and the mechanic told us that because the fluid was dirty we need to change the pump when we do the rack and quoted around $1300 back in 2016. We decided we would just wait until the pump started going bad. But it keeps going! I'm considering taking on this job and flushing out the dirty fluid and leaving the pump. Is there anything I'm overlooking? Thanks for the video.

I spent probably 4 hours trying to get the pressure line fitting back onto the new rack. I finally gave up, pulled the rack back out of the car, detached the line from the power steering pump, pulled it from the van and installed it on the rack outside of the vehicle. Slid the whole rack and attached line back into the vehicle and had it bolted back down and all other lines attached in about 20 minutes. I’m a professional mechanic and I’ve never had a rack kick my butt like this one did. There was no room for my fat hands to get that pressure line back on. You did a great job on your video btw.

Glad it worked out for you! I think you mean WD-40, right? Just keep in mind that WD-40 might help loosen the connection between the steering column and the input shaft, but the mere fact those two were possibly rusted together to some degree won't cause the symptoms I experienced. The column and input shaft are *supposed* to turn absolutely in unison.

Hi dave, my parents have gone through 4 powersteering pumps in our 2006 toyota sienna in the last four months. the dealership was the ones who "Fixed" it. they finally saw the frustration we had and came and picked it up for us to try to fix it again. they found the fluid was burnt and said there was not enough fluid "Circulation' in the steering gear which cause the fluid to overheat which burnt out the pump. is this a viable diagnosis? we did have the rack replaced about five years ago. these vans are absolute tanks, this is the first major problem with it.
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Caleb, and thanks for watching. For a power steering pump to fail, it would have to be significantly short of fluid for an extended period of time. If you've gone through *FOUR* pumps, I'd sure take a hard look at a possible leak - and maybe a big one. Check out the boots at the ends and be sure they're not rotted from pooled fluid leaking out the end seals - just as happened with my own rack. As for the dealer's diagnosis, the steering gear can only circulate whatever fluid is in the system, unless they're trying to suggest there was some peculiar obstruction within the steering gear itself, which is unlikely and would be evident while driving it. I would also check to see if there are any leaks in the two return lines right along the base of the steering rack. Until you find the source of that leak, I really fear you're at risk to continue replacing pumps!! Good luck and I hope you get that problem solved!

@DIYDaveOK

Do you mean after replacing the rack or before? In general, a steering rack problem won't affect speed *unless* the zero-angle sensor (steering sensor) has failed and the computer cannot detect rotation of the steering column. That can trigger and automatic slowdown of the car that will sound like "grating."

The steering rack was the only major repair I had to do to that Sienna. Other than that, I had to replace the spare when the carrier cable rusted through, and did a video on that but it was spoiled for technical reasons 😥. Beyond that were just routine services, eg oil changes, brakes, transmission fluid spill-and-fill (did a video on that). I expected to change the driver-side CV axle as it was starting to make a "clicking" sound, but we sold the Sienna just last year b/c my wife was ready for something smaller and we had "undergrown" it. It was a great vehicle that took us to Florida *five* times without a hiccup and I'm sure had at least another 100k miles in it. I miss it!!

Would making sure the rack is centerted before connecting it to the steering rod would help avoid the steering angle recalibration? Or is calinration a must do for every time you replace the rack?

Thanks for the kind words. I think the SAS recalibration is necessary when you replace the rack. For your torn CV boot, that *shouldn't* be too bad a job on the driver's side. It can be tougher on the passenger side because the axle is supported by a carrier bearing and often the axle gets seized in that bearing.

If I had to record myself doing any DIY work and commenting, there would be too many 4 letter curse words that I would have to beep out and no one would be able to comprehend what I was saying. Editing the video would be a longer process than to actually replace the steering rack.

My dad have 2010 Toyota Sienna. He took it to a Toyota Dealership and he was told that the Rack and Pinion need to be replaced. They quoted $3,000 for the job. New Rack and Pinion to be installed, steering fluid and an alignment. I'm not a mechanic. But I know how to changed rotors, disk pads, flush sttering fluid, coolant and transmission on my 2008 Volvo XC90. Of course I have a Vida Dice ( a Volvo Diiagnostic tool that tells you how to remove and replace parts step by step) Looking at your excellent video, I might take this DIY. What's the name of that program that you use to calibrate?

You mentioned that it took Dexron 3, but it appears you are using Dexron 6....?
@DIYDaveOK

Great catch; but keep in mind that Dexron 6 is defined to be backward-compatible with prior versions of Dexron, so this fluid works great. Several months after this repair, the new steering rack has been flawless. Thanks so much for watching and the good comments!

Hey Dave, how's the fix holding up a year after you did it? I'm getting ready to put tie rods in because I found the boot torn open (2005 model year with 79K on it...no surprise the other side is dry rotted). How do you keep all of your nuts and bolts straight that you take out?

Fantastic! We put another 12,000 or so miles on the van in the year since I did the replacement. It handled wonderfully and we've had zero problems at all. Thanks for watching!

Hello, you have really nice and precise videos, and I really appreciate them, by the way I would Highly recommend you to try one of the really cheap Amazon Electronic Ratchets, they really come handy when you’re already loosen up a long bolt, or vise versa, making sure it’s torqued enough by hand.. and also one question, is your car a Sienna LE? And if yes, did your part fit completely? How about the O rings?

@@danymalekian4854 Hi Dany! Sorry if I missed the question! Yes, our 2008 Sienna absolutely was a FWD LE. And replacing the rack solved all the problems, and the O rings I used worked perfectly.( BTW, the replacement rack was OEM straight from Toyota. )

Hi, Vinh! Yes, I had a local shop align the van after I finished the rack replacement. Just put new tires on it this weekend, and all my prior issues with stability and traction lights have disappeared. Van handles great! Thanks for watching!

Hi I am wondering if you had also problem with the slip signal while you were driving the van?, the a did the alarm sound before you change the steering rack? If it did after the job did a got fix?, I ask because my is doing that and is dangerous. But is not leaking power steering oil. So maybe the bushing are bad?.
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK 4 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching! We had been receiving the VSC, ABS, and stability control warning lights on shallow curves at moderate speeds, but it never tried to restrict vehicle speed. Replacing the rack and resetting the zero-angle was a complete fix for all the related issues. We've been driving the van for a couple of months following the rack replacement and there have been no further recurrences of any of the warning lights. The loss of power steering fluid comes through the rack end seals, which allows the fluid to pool in the boots and corrode/rot them. I don't think there are any bushings in the rack that can fail.

So what was the fix on the problem you described? My Sienna is having the same issue. Slip light will turn on at highway speed and ABS will engage. I'm planning to just replace the bushings. I'm still watching the video and learn how to take the steering rack out. I don't think I can just pry up the rack and replace the bushings. Nice work though.

Hi Dave, Thank you so much for posting this repair. I'm having similar issues with an '07 model and your video gave me great input into what is potentially causing traction control to trigger off. Also where you able to diagnose the onboard lights? and if so how did you fix them? Excellent video I'm attaching another video that diagnosed the bushings on the rack and pinion as another potential failure for these models. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m86XZaecvdrKg3k.html

Yes. That's what needs to be done, although as I said I think disconnectkng the battery for several minutes might accomplish the same thing with the wheel pointed ahead.
