FYI, I have a 2014 Imprezza parts car which, I believe, has exactly the same tank as most of the other models around that year and I could shoot a video on the tank removal since so many people have watched this one. like this comment if you think that would be helpful, you know, just like a vote.

Awesome. It'll be great to see step by step. Can we also have a quick view on the brake/fuel line routing in this model? I want to inspect rust condition of those lines on my subaru but they are installed behind plate and hard to check without a lift.

@@patrick8622 I will be working on this car again soon, so I'll see if I can get a video of it while it's on the lift

Much thanks for your time and effort. I'm not dropping the fuel tank on my 2006 subie sti unless I have to.been having an issue with an evap code po448 haven't fiqureg it out yet gonna do a smoke test then ship the pcm out for troubleshooting

Before you go through the difficult task of dropping the tank, I would recommend checking all of the lines where they go into the tank. Ours had a broken off nipple on the back side that we didn't notice until after the tank was out. It would've been much easier to repair in place, than dropping the tank. Check those little nipples near the fill tube.

Hi - thanks for posting the video. Is there an easy way to see if a nipple is broken? I have some slow leakage that shows up on the passenger side protective cover. I pulled the protective cover, but couldn't see the source - it seems to be coming from above the center back. Is that where the nipples are? Thanks!

@@markboehle4667 I'm trying to locate a gas smell source on mine too I have found that there are plastic "fuel cut" or fuel cut-off valves on top of the tank that can crack and allow fuel to escape. Can't see them unless the tank is dropped. I've just begun diagnosing mine, I'm mostly trying to recover from a serious case of the flu. When better in a few days I'll try to see what I can through the fuel pump port under the back seat. I may rent a little camera on a flexible cable to see it more clearly without disassembling the messier half of the car. If I find the leak I will probably cut an access hole in the floor to access the leaking parts. The floor can be drilled with a stop on the bit to prevent drilling into parts under it. I use a piece of small copper tubing cut to length and slipped over the bit to make a bit stop. .After drilling several holes this way insert the drill into each hole bit by hand to feel how much clearance there is between the floor and tank top. If there is enough space to use a hand nibbler sheet metal cutter then it's done. if not the floor pan can be drilled continuously which is still a trivial task for me compared to dropping everything in the rear drive train, brakes and exhaust. Aluminum sheet metal, RTV and pop rivets will be used to reseal the cut hole.

@@markboehle4667 Hey Mark, I am experiencing the exact same symptoms. Did you find the leak source? How did you fix it? Much appreciated!
@danryan31464 жыл бұрын
Good thing you mentioned the nipples, I was about to begin the process of dropping the tank...I'll check the nipples in the morning. Thanks for posting the video, looks like some common issues with the Subaru fuel tank.

Thanks mate, yes like you said clips aren't mush chop. We are about to do the same job and we purchased a quality 2 post vehicle hoist just for this job and other jobs latter. What was the issue with your tank, ours is leaking when over 1/2 full and the new tank is ordered and on its way from the USA.
@Twiddlerdammit6 жыл бұрын
Specialized 29er Check the nipples on the back of the tank. Ours has one broken off, which caused the tank to leak. I think that you can fix those without pulling the tank. I would put a screw in the existing hole where the nipple broke off, then T into one of the other lines that's near. That's what we did after pulling the tank.

Holy mother of rust. Thanks for showing me that I should not attempt this at all myself.

Personally, if I had to do it again, I would've screwed a tapered screw into the broken-off nipple hole, then install a T-fitting into another, nearby line and put your broken off line onto that T. I hope that is understandable.

I have a question on the fuel tank itself - is there a valve inside the tank right after the filler hose? Like a roll over valve or an anti-siphon valve?
@Twiddlerdammit6 жыл бұрын
Sam Plett - I have absolutely no idea. Sorry.

how many hours to do remove and replace the tank? I just had this done at a shop yesterday, charged 10 hours, but seeing this I am thinking it might actually be reasonable. Thankful I didn't try this under jack stands.
@Twiddlerdammit6 жыл бұрын
Tough to say... Having never done it myself before this time, there was a lot of trial and error. For a mechanic (that, I am not) I would believe 10 hours would be excessive.
@specialized29er866 жыл бұрын
I was estimated 20 hours for the entire job and that's by Subaru $4,500 all up so I'm thinking with the tank being $1871.00 and $100.00 an hour labour that sound about right. Ours is a 2005 Outback with 50,000 ks so I'm thinking the tanks failed just from being 13 years old and no matter how many ks they've done.

@@specialized29er86 Gotta 2008 Impreza 2.5i with 99000 km on odometer. The nipple from evap line (B) rusted out and I had a fuel smell and fuel dripping down from rear passenger area every time just after filling up gas tank. So I went to a Radiator shop (these guys know how to reweld/braze/tap&thread anything) and they gave me an estimate of 1200 canadian $ + Taxes to drop the tank, completely refurbish it (they also specialise in refurbishing fuel tank), reinstall it and do a leak pressure test afterwards to make sure the job is well done. Now knowing from you post that the Subaru stealership would charge me 4500$ for this job, I'm very glad I went to a radiator shop instead ! 4500$ !!!
@pirihern93295 жыл бұрын
I wonder how much at a dealership. My guess north of 3500 dollars if not more

where is the fuel gauge sensor? It looks like mine needs replacing..
@Twiddlerdammit2 жыл бұрын
Just saw this comment, sorry it's so late :( The fuel float is under the back seat. Remove the back seat bottom, there are 2 covers in the floor, remove the covers, the fuel sensor sender is under one of the covers in the top of the tank, the fuel pump is under the other. I hope that this helps someone.
