Everything to know about the Prius Three things that I forgot to tell you to look for when buying a Prius the battery generally last up to 150,000 miles so if you’re looking for one that has more than that make sure the hybrid battery was replaced or that could be a good negotiation point to point out if the battery hasn’t been replaced the other expensive fix is the Catalytic converter. It’s not uncommon for in the city people stealing these because of the high mineral content inside so just be aware those are the two most expensive fix is on this car hybrid battery catalytic converter (Engines and transmissions can get pricey but those two generally wear out around 150,000 miles just heads up)
This episode is everything you need to know about the Toyota Prius is it really as bad as the automotive pundits make it out to be find out today on this episode of what it’s like

There is also a secret hidden drawer below the cup holders in front of the console down below. There is a little lip on the drawer you lift up and pull it out… I found money in mine!!! Love my 2008 Prius…Just turned 200,000 miles…I plan on driving it another 200,000 or more!

I have had a 2008 touring, with heated leather seats, sound, navigation etc, and it is a wonderful car. We drive 65-70 mph in ND all the time, and I still get great mpg. A thing I love is that even at -30, it pops out heat within about 2 miles. The naysayers are clueless. Lol.

I totally agree it’s not a car that a car enthusiast should like but it’s a great run around car.. mine is burning oil it’s seems to burn a quarter oil every 500 miles it’s not leaking that’s the only issue besides the hash I absolutely hate to hatch button why they couldn’t put a latch on it and actually make it a handle is beyond me.. those two things are the only two things oh wait I forgot one the lights are very marginal I also drive a 52 Chevy 1 ton truck and my Chevy lights are brighter than the lights in my Prius. The high beams on my truck I could see miles down the road.. prius are ok can’t see mikes tho. The thing that gets me the most is he just came out with a brand new Prius it doesn’t get any better gas mileage than this one. I’m over here trying to figure out why that is because there’s close to two decades of technology in the new one

@What.its.like just purchased a 08 for the wife, nice little car! First thing I did for her is replace those worthless high power POS headlight bulbs with LEDs, a little tricky but not too bad (KZfaq) basically remove headlight assembly and bypass the hi power capacitor thing and make it 12v. Sooo much better!! Wish I replaced the e- motor cooling pump while I had the bumper cover loose because I replaced that a week later, lol, also pretty simple diy. Had the triangle of death and ac didn't work suddenly, a little research and that pump fixed it good as new!

We had two of these 2009s at one point. My 2009 Touring Edition consistently got 42 MPG. My wife's 2009 Pack 2 got 46 when relatively new. My kid drives it now, and gets 41-42 with 207,000 miles. These were the most reliable cars we EVER owned. Cheap to own and operate, they are very versatile family cars. I drove the hell out of mine before giving it to one of my twins. Alas, someone drove off the road and wrecked it, or he would still be driving it! Transmission position 'B' is a combination of regenerative braking AND engine braking. It should be used when going down long, steep grades, when regenerative braking has fully charged the HV battery, and regenerative braking cannot be done because there is no more battery to charge. Also, that vent on the passenger side of the car next to the back seat is HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY COOLING. Be sure it stays clean and is never blocked. In fact, the battery fan should be cleaned at least every 100,000 miles. Heat will kill your HV traction battery faster than anything. I drive a 2010 now (all the recalls were done), and my wife drives a 2015 Prius V. The twin who had my old 2009 got a 2010 that someone totaled for him. He traded his money and the insurance settlement on a 2013 Lexus 300h hybrid that is absolutely fantastic. We love Toyota hybrids!

I owned it for 9 years and I still miss it. After watching your video it reminded me why I liked it so much. Thanks for making the video.

I’m a car enthusiast and if your car is enthusiast your not supposed to love that car but I absolutely love mine I think a lot of people just don’t know how to drive it.. I raise the Mazda speed three a couple weeks ago and I beat them it was like a 2005 hatchback not the fastest thing in the world but the fact that I beat him he couldn’t believe it it was hilarious It gets really good gas mileage I will be the first to say it is an extremely quirky car some features need to be woken up sometimes like the dashboard sometimes it’s black and you have to put the key back in it to get it to go.. What happened to yours?

The Prius also has a 12 volt battery which powers accessories like the Radio, lights, fans, remote system, door locks, component memories, etc. The battery is an AGM battery and MUST be replaced with an AGM Battery. After 8 years, I had to replace my 12 volt AGM battery in my 2012, located under the floor in the RR corner of the Prius. I replaced it with a 'Yellow Top' Optima battery, which may have been a mistake. It went dead a couple of times and didn't seem to give the same service as the original Toyota battery. I recommend getting a replacement battery from Toyota. On my Gen III, it read out on the dashboard that there was an issue with the battery, but it was unclear which one. It did tell you when the key battery was low and when the hybrid battery was bad. Looking back, when it just stated 'Battery', it meant the 12 volt battery. Warning, DO NOT run a Prius out of gas and continue driving until the hybrid battery is exhausted. Even if you put gas in it, it will no longer run. Using a bi-directional scanner with specific Prius software, you have to clear all the trouble codes and if you are lucky, there will be enough power in the hybrid battery to start the car. The car has 2 electric motors inside the transaxle. MG1 and MG2(MG=Motor-Generator). MG1 starts the engine. What you see on the top right under the hood is the inverter which take the electricity, converts it, and sends it to the appropriate system. The electric motors cannot be seen unless you tear down the transaxle assy. That vent you saw in the back seat is for cooling the hybrid battery and it's computer. There is a fan inside and that vent should never be blocked at any time. The cooling fans will cycle on and off plus it will run even if the car isn't turned on. Should it get really hot inside the car, the air conditioning will turn on. The engine can start at any time if the hybrid battery gets too low. When servicing the engine, it is best to access the hybrid battery, under the rear floor, infront of the spare tire well liner and pull the plug . As far as engine servicing goes, stick with the recommended oil viscosity and use 100% synthetic oil(Mobil 1 is best). If you are near a Costco, they sell Mobil 1 for less than others charge and it often goes on sale at a price lower than oil wholesalers offer. You should change the oil every 5K, including the filter. BG products has an additive which will make it safe to go 10K with synthetic oil. Remember, oil and filters are cheaper than engines. The transaxle has it's own oil, ATF-WS. Use ONLY this oil. It is available in aftermarket brands but I always stuck with genuine Toyota brand in all the different Toyota vehicles that use it. The engine and transaxle/inverter have separate colling systems. The radiator is split into two systems and both use Toyota/Lexus Super Long Life Coolant. This is also available in the aftermarket, but ONLY use this grade. The heater on your Gen II has a thermos-like container under the LF of the car, by the transaxle. This stores hot water so that you might have instant heat when you first turn the car on in cold weather. You should run the car everyday and only shut it down when the gasoline engine is up to full running temperature. If your car has navigation control, the car will have a DVD drive under the front passenger seat. The genuine Toyota DVD's can be purchased from multiple sources at lower cost than the dealer. They are always atleast 2 years behind current road layouts. Even if you use Google on your smartphone for navigation, it isn't up to date and will lead you astray. As I told you before, my 2012 Toyota was trouble-free, except for the 12 v battery replacement and when it was 4 months short of being 10 years old. First the hybrid battery failed and then the computerized braking system failed. Both were replaced under warranty at no cost to me. My next predicted failure was the A/C compressor and with the cost of a replacement compressor alone, we decided to trade it in on a new 2022 Prius. I have worked on up to 100 Prius' and maybe 25 Gen III's. I have not seen a headgasket problem and my friends at the Toyota dealer have only seen it when the cars were not serviced correctly. The biggest problem is weak and carboned-up engine oil rings, which cause excessive oil consumption. Changing the oil and filter every 5K, my 2012 never leaked or used one drop of oil. The Gen VI Prius is just around the corner and will have a higher capacity hybrid battery and eventually later in 2023, a larger engine and maybe larger electric motors. If you can buy a bumper to bumper warranty for a reasonable price, buy it. The hybrid battery alone will pay for it.

This review was absolutely amazing. I'm possibly buying one of my neighbors 2009 Prius for 5K and february. I don't know too much about the car yet but that's just what they're looking for so I still have to look at around and check it. I have no idea what I'm doing but I've Loved Priuses for all my life since I was 14 I've always wanted was my dream car. If you have any advice or recommendations of things to do when I first buy it I would love to hear it. When I first get it I'm looking to change out as many things as I can for new things to get a service with possible recommendations because I want to keep this car that's Prime as I can

Great review on the Toyota Prius. I hate that light bar glare in the window at night it's annoying. There is a way to fix that it's a by the driver's side door right in the middle of the kick panel there's a dimmer switch I had to adjust it on mine and that solves the problem with the green bar glare at night.

I’ve had my 09 gen 2 Prius for 14 years, and love it. Totally agree with your assessment. I just smile at the naysayers after spending seventeen bucks to fill it up knowing I’ll be getting 50+MPG. The other rumor is the hv battery has a very limited life. This may be true, but I haven’t experienced it in 14 years.

Despite my statement about the 2009 model, I’ve been a longtime fan of the Prius with my 1st Prius, a 2003 first generation model. That model was utterly reliable with just a couple of tire replacements over 150000 miles, and a 12 volt battery replacement (tricky to find). Unlike later generations, the car allowed one to sit more upright, it was quieter, had softer cloth seats, it even got better fuel economy on the highway (52 mpg driving on I-70 over Vail pass to Denver!), and it had more accessible controls for the stereo and AC. BUT, it lacked the lift back design of the 2009, which is convenient for trips from IKEA.

I haven’t had any issues with mine I have noticed I don’t like their interior selection I almost bought one with leather but the leather seats were completely destroyed and for the price of these are going in the area in which I live I couldn’t see spending that kind of money for a car that the interior was destroyed.. I ended up paying $4600 for the one that I have it’s the second nicest one that I looked at I looked at an even nicer one but the guy wanted a fortune for it it was nicer in some areas in some areas it wasn’t so nice it lived in a city and somebody hit the mirror and the mirror was duct taped on there and I tried saying that as a negotiation thing and instead of negotiating guy just got in the car and left it was the weirdest situation I was ever in. . " it's a Brilliant Car" 👍 Great review - with high gas prices I was looking for a second vehicle - that vehicle was going to be my first Prius.. with patience and research, in August I just purchased a 2005 Prius with 160k miles for $4,500.. * The high mileage did not scare me at all * Be patient - most used Prius are priced high * Look for "made in Japan" along the door panel I live in Sunny Arizona and just did my own oil change after 4k miles - easy car to work on. * The cars easily can reach over 250k miles. Thank you again for the review. These cars are Amazing. 👍

In love with my reliable Generation 2, 2008 Prius, with 170,000 miles. Bought new 25K 10/2007. Excellent shape, since its garage kept. Original Battery perhaps due to less corrosion on the hybrid battery connections? Has additional front and rear running lights. The HID headlights failed but replaced them myself without taking the bumper off by feeling my way with my hand. They are much brighter than the originals. Replace the 12V battery twice. New water pump. New left front bearing. 2 New PVC valve replacement. Fix the leak in the air-conditioning system. Cleaned hybrid battery fan with added cleanable filter screen at air intake. Went 90K 10yr. with the energy saver Defender Michelin tires and replaced them with the regular Defender Michelin tires. Loss a few miles per gallon but handles better and a softer ride maybe due to new thread. The Prius is used for long trips only with an average mileage of 50+ MPG. Short trips are by bike, feet and public transit all year. Sometimes the dash goes dark when there’s a change of temperature downward, but it comes back on after 10 to 50 . someone said cold solder joints on the electronics. It’s a beautiful sports car Barcelona RED. Good sleeping camping car with a 6’ bed with great cargo capacity. Adding a portable inverter makes a 115 Volt generator for back up efficient home power with the on and off cycle of the engine. The Princess Prius is a tough survivor like the princess cat in the movie “The Incredible Journey”. The beautiful large dash display is ahead of its time with sharp graphics like a space ship. Ran out of gas, and a whole dashboard lit up including the triangle of death (indicates serious malfunction - do something now!). Fortunately filled up 1/2 mile away before the battery became too low. Never again!! It’s an adventure reliable stealth vehicle that slips through the air quietly! The best smooth styling of all the model years. Definitely a incognito James Bond vehicle with secret abilities never to be underestimated. So watch out!!! Soon it will become a classic antique with appreciating value.

Great information and insight. Thank you so much for sharing all of that. I absolutely love mine, it’s a fun car to drive fast. I kind of sort of want to take it to the race track. I found a way to make it go faster because the transmission doesn’t shift like a normal transmission you could back off of the gas and push push it down again I don’t know it like revs up the engine, but you can get it to go pretty quick.. I raised the speed three a couple months ago and he couldn’t believe I beat him. I couldn’t believe that. I beat him either and he pulled up next to me at the next traffic light, and he said what is in that thing and I just said standard Prius, PowerPlant.. They handle well for what they are, and the steering is direct and precise.. this car gets a lot of shit from the automotive community but it’s a really good car especially the generation too the generation two might be the best Prius

I just found out that about mine has that burn oil problem as well because it doesn’t leak anywhere on my driveway I checked the oil the other day because the maintenance light came on there’s absolutely none in it I have no idea how long it’s been like that.. and that is why Honda’s and Toyota’s are the best new cars they don’t blow up instantly when they are out of oil.. my Honda burned Hoyle as well and I drove countless miles full throttle with no oil in it and it never blew up I ended up taking it to the junkyard two weeks ago. I tried to kill it and I couldn’t kill it it was going to cost too much money to keep it on the road I should’ve did an episode on all of the crazy stuff that I did 35,000 miles on the same oil a year and a half with the same oil filter do that in a Mercedes-Benz. Hahaha it ran just fine it needed too much stuff to keep it on the road that’s why I got rid of it it needed a wheel bearing windshield it was starting to rot I use the Prius to drive back-and-forth I do a lot of commuting to go find Classic Cars and I love it it’s a car that if you’re a car guy you’re not supposed to love it’s not a bad car in fact it’s a lot of fun to drive fast because it stays glued to the road

I was quite unsettled at first with this "advanced" electronic car. I don't own this but my older housemate does. I also think this car is so well thought out in performance and practicality. I set the cruise control and the engine and transmission does the rest. Love the electronic key thing and the door locking options. @@What.its.like. Years ago I owned 6 foreign vehicles, they included; 4 Jaguars, of which 3 were Vanden Plas models and 1 was an S-Type 4.0, the newest. The Jaguars were all in black and were superb road warriors, years were; 1989, 1997, 1999 and 2001. The '89 Jaguar's speedometer top speed was 155 MPH, however it's safe to assume its top speed was beyond 155 MPH as it had no governor, more pedal and reserved power at the 155 MPH mark. Truly an unbelievable car IMO and the best riding and easiest to maintain out of all of them. It also had the premium option that was a pressurized mineral oil suspension that was hands down, the absolute best I ever rode on. -Owned a 1992 Lexus LS400 in black with a silky smooth V8 and transmission and excellent AC system. The mileage reached just over 300k before it was donated, and everything still worked. -Then I owned a big BMW 740iL, it was big, beautiful, fast and finished in glacier green ice. Excellent car when new, but MANY costly premature issues as it aged. From faulty window mechanisms, false car alarm triggerings, AC and transmission issues at just 120k miles. Too fragile IMO, but the V8 was superb. Out of all the foreign cars I owned, the BMW was the most expensive to repair and just plagued with issues at such an early age. Never again. Now with a bigger family, I own 2 Lincolns (Fords) and 1 Ford, all V8 equipped, 1 Navigator and 1 Expedition, huge SUVs and 1 Town Car sedan. All are extremely reliable and affordable with towing capabilities and lots and lots of room inside.

@@What.its.like. The 2023 model was in the air 6 months ago, but I stumbled on a bargain: 3 YO Prius Prime with 25K miles in perfect condition, with snow tires and an extra rim for only 26K. But I'm a fan of streamed lined cars, the 2020 model has a Cx of 0.24, the 2023 model has gone up di 0.27. Unfortunately my country is behind on elettrification, otherwise I would have gone for the Tesla.

"Do you feel like we do?" , Peter Frampton from the album "Frampton come alive." This was my very first concert. Yes / Frampton at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia in 1977 (maybe 76, not sure). The 2nd gen Prius is an awesome car! Most people that look down on these cars have never driven one. Sure they look odd and they are not the fastest thing on the road, but they easily keep up with traffic, are very nice to drive and offer great fuel economy. For the money you would be hard pressed to find another vehicle as efficient and reliable as a 2nd gen Prius. Don't forget - you can also camp in it, haul 8ft long 2x4's in it, it's brakes will last at least 200k and replacement parts, including the hybrid battery, are cheap. Finally, you can also power your house with it. Buy one and I promise you will "Feel like we do"!!!!

I picked that song because the Prius gets a bad rap and it’s really not a bad car I remember Jeremy Clarkson and all of the comments that he made about it it really isn’t a bad car.. Maybe next year I would love to put it up against cars that are really fast maybe take it to a dragstrip or something like that and do a segment called and you thought your car was fast..

I saw a video on YT where Toyota engineer demonstrated a demo rig for Prius engine. It is made of original parts but just for teaching purpose and no real combustion. He told, that B is actually not a regen braking as many think. Instead it forces electric motors into wasteful mode (a sort of electromagnetic brake that turns rotation into heat) to prevent hybrid battery from overcharging (which is bad) during lengthy downhill segments.

BTW, you missed a few features like the other large storage cubby beneath the front of the cupholders, that pulls out forward towards the firewall, and the power outlet and 1/8 stereo jack inside the armrest cubby at the front. At least I think the base models have that stuff, I have an '09 Touring model, which has a lot more stuff that is extra and not included here. Re: the CVT Transmission- it is a power splitter, with planetary gears that are ECU controlled via the electric motor section, not at all what 99.9% of people who hear CVT think of. No clutch, no variable pullies or cones, or belts, or chains, etc., etc.

I own a 2007 Prius identical to yours... i use mine to door dash and the smart key system is fantastic, Ill never own one without... that is why it has the key slot, for models that dont have the smart key... the line also bothers me at night, but I believe it happens over the years the digital dash, which shines up and reflects toward the driver, gets misaligned and reveles the bar... i usually move the dash brightness wheel down a click to lessen it... While yes the car handles brilliantly and the electric power steering is tight, the grip of the tiny 15" wheels is atrocious... the car feels unsettling in emergency maneuvers, and also had what I thought was the worst traction control system that was flat out dangerous and felt out of sinc with the car... I purposely upsized the wheels to 17" Scion wheels and what an amazing difference... it grips the road, the traction control becomes decent and useable... the 15" wheels are an american market only option, all other markets got 16" wheels.. the reasoning is better gas mileage but i feel it ruins the cars engineering just to squeeze mpgs... the car is so much safer to drive... my family's safety isnt worth a few lost mpgs... mine gets around 45mpgs with 247k

Don't know much about the Prius but there's a ton of them on the road so they can't be too bad. The one owner I spoke with loved it except for one thing- he was a Ham radio guy and the electronics in his car wiped out any receiver except the factory one. I've sat next to them at red lights and noticed the same thing. Being something of a radio enthusiast of all kinds that is a deal-breaker for me, but in the Prius credit you get similar with lots of newer (and some older) cars to a lesser degree. And if I have any EV I want the option of all battery charging types: plug-in, IC self-charging,and regen braking too along with a decent battery-only range. The plug-in needn't be fast charging; I just want that option for when it's convenient. I do know something of how these work and it's neither expensive or tough to do all 3 along with a good battery range. As to the expensive cars, well they're wastes of money now meant only to impress the impressionable about wealth. There was a time where they were ahead technologically but now everyone is right up there, taking away any advantage they otherwise may have had.

I’ve had mine for over a year now put 42,000 miles on it in a year absolutely love it I totally know it’s a huge appliance car but as much driving as I do to go look at cars and stuff for the channel I never needed a vehicle for an image I drive cars because I like them like different driving experiences. My favorite my absolute favorite thing to do with the Prius is Teetz trucks on the highway because all the newer trucks are governed at 75 miles an hour and they can’t catch me only top out of 111 but it’s it’s hilarious. They get mad when they can’t pass you… I will also add it is not good in the snow traction control on the thing. I absolutely hate it. It doesn’t let you do anything, and once the wheel starts slipping, it just cuts power like it just totally gives up. I want to do a segment this year called and you thought your car was fast. I want to get some moderately fast muscle cars and race the Prius against them the Prius isn’t fast it’s like 0-60 in 10 secs on paper I say on paper because I’ve gotten it to go faster than that

Do you feel like we do, Peter Frampton……The Gen 2 Prius is probably the most revolutionary car of the 21st century……Considering the technology was introduced 20 plus years ago, it was way ahead of it’s time…..The Prius is one of the most copied vehicles on the road considering how many hybrids and other car manufacturers including Toyota have developed……I have a 2008 Prius with 175000 miles and it is my daily driver…..The key to keeping the Prius healthy is to drive it as much as possible charging and discharging the hybrid battery……And of course maintenance, changing the oil and such…….

As a car guy it’s kind of one of those guiltypleasures you’re not supposed to like this car but I love mine.. my wife calls it a tin can but ever since I don’t work at the dealership anymore she’s been driving it more than I have. It’s funny how that all works you know I buy something and then my wife ends up using it more than I do but I do use it a lot especially when I go to Classic auto mall that’s 5 1/2 hours away from here. I can usually run 7075 the whole way out there and I have to get gas until I’m part way home. The other day a Mazda speed three from the early to mid 2000s was riding my butt so I let him pass me and then when I got on the four-lane highway I passed him and he never caught up to me.. I think a lot of people don’t like the car because they don’t know how to drive it if you know how to drive it is a really fun car to drive. Especially in the twisties going fast it’s pretty planted

Jay, I had a new 2014 Lexus CT 200h and I absolutely hated the car the entire year I owned it. The car was simply a Lexus body covering a Prius motor and drivetrain. The battery was only used to get the car moving, after that the gas engine took over. And, the gas engine with battery assist was useless to pass anything on the highway. Can't say I even got the advertised gas mileage. Because it had traction control that couldn't be turn off, the car wouldn't even go up my slightly inclined driveway in the snow. The car was a dismal failure and is not offered by Lexus anymore.

I’ll have to look that up I never knew that that car existed.. I did a lot of research before I went and bought this car all the research that I found said that the second generation Toyota Prius was the best generation they ever made it better than the ones that they build now for the same reasons that you said I wanted a third generation Prius but after looking at them and finding out that they had issues such as head gasket issues that the second generation Prius does not have.. they went to a bigger motor for the third generation 1.8 L versus the 1.5 that’s in the second GEN.. and they’re not simple to fix and they are still expensive like a used third GEN is almost about as much as getting a new one so it’s almost like you might as well just get a new one if you’re looking at a third GEN I was looking at the third GEN because of the plug-in hybrid aspect but once finding out that it only goes 12 miles it wouldn’t be effective for me.. i’m not Bsing you The first tank of gas in my Prius I averaged 54 miles to the gallon it hasn’t been that great since then because honestly I’ve been driving it kind of like a maniac the last two weeks and driving like a maniac I’m still averaging 45 miles to the gallon which is insane this is the only vehicle correction this is the only modern vehicle that I’ve had that gets better gas mileage than advertised.. eventually going to do a comparison video gas mileage shoot out Prius versus other cars that don’t necessarily have to be hybrid because the only direction petitor to the Prius is the Honda insight and I heard bad things about that car.. reason why the second generation Prius is so good is because it’s simple after the second GEN they are no longer as simple as they are in the second generation I have to look up that car now and see if I can review one we don’t do a whole Lotta new cars on this channel but I figured 2009 has been close to 15 years ago so this car isn’t necessarily new today’s a double feature day 56 Buick is coming later on

Great comment. With both of my Prius’s, 2003 & 2009, I quickly not only got used to not having a speedometer in front of me; but I ended up appreciating not having the glare of it shining between me and the road ahead at night. Yes, you have to glance slightly to the right (or to the left in England) but the dash is uncluttered and you tend to concentrate on your driving.

It's a cool system. The engine is very high compression, but has adjustable intake valve timing. This allows the intake valve to stay open for a tiny fraction of the compression stroke. That reduces the overall compression ratio as the fuel and air is squeezed, but keeps it high for the power stroke. This reduces the engine torque, which the electric motor makes up for.

Enjoy you review. I had the exact model year of Prius, a fully loaded blue metallic. The pluses, we’re the fuel economy of 47mpg around town, the keyless entry with push button start, and that unfortunately was about it. The leather interior was thinly padded and cracked; reliability was surprisingly poor with problems with the hybrid inverter, wheel alignment, and a multitude of rattles and air leaks. The gas gauge read empty when 5 gallons were left, making trip planning difficult. The rear visibility was awful, like looking through a tunnel with a small split area of glass to look back through. And the car was low, like a British sports car from the 60s with my butt riding only a foot off the ground. But I kept the car for 120,000 miles, trading it in what turned out to be a more practical, quiet, and reliable car… a Subaru Forester. But I miss the fuel economy.

I bought my car off a guy who buys them and fixes them up and sell them he claims that he replaced the battery it’s got 188,000 miles on it I paid $4600 for it is the most expensive high mileage used car I’ve ever bought but so far I haven’t had any issues with the check engine lights on because of the whole tire pressure thing switched tires needs to be reset I haven’t reset it yet.. I am not be asking you this car can get 60 miles to the gallon if you just tweak your driving habits a little bit I’ve gotten 55 out of it with the first tank of gas I was running late to a wedding that’s why I had to drive fast it’s a bit of a long story.. The car is a classic case in point that it’s a lot more fun to drive a slow car fast and it is a fast car fast.. I’m not sure about the whole battery degradation, The battery is an essential part to the system but it doesn’t work like an electric battery dies it doesn’t charge up for while you’re driving it it only charges up to about 80% so I’m say they last 150,000 miles and every batteries different you know you can get a battery right off the shelf that has a dead cell in it or doesn’t have a cell that produces as much energy as the rest of the cells in the pack some mileage may vary.. this car does everything opposite you get way better gas mileage and city than you do on the highway not saying that it can’t go Highway speed it’s just the more the gasoline engine is off the better gas mileage you get.. The third generation Toyota Prius are still really expensive like it would make more sense to just go buy a new one for what they’re charging for a used one that is why the allure of the second GEN is so good.. I absolutely love the car I bought it for a number of reasons I commute back-and-forth from a far distance away and I couldn’t afford to be putting $20 in my van every day I went from spending $150-$200 a week in gas to $30 a week which is insane it almost doesn’t seem real but that is what I pay to drive a week in the Prius and I could go anywhere I wanna go..

It’s going to vary I found if you can draft off the person in front of you you get phenomenal gas mileage obviously you’d wanna keep your foot off the Excelerator as much as you possibly can to get good gas mileage I drive to classic auto Mall which is on the other side of the state of Pennsylvania it’s 5 1/2 hours away from here it’s about 300 miles according to the computer at 75/80 miles an hour the whole trip it’s still getting 35 miles to the gallon. I’ve had the computer say as high as 50 miles to the gallon but you have to work for it. This car gets better gas mileage the slower you go in traffic driving because it shut the engine off and you drive around using battery power. As a car enthusiast you’re not supposed to like this car but I absolutely love mine saved me a ton on gas this year. Since uploading this video I found A really cool trick to make it go faster and I think it’s a characteristic of the CVT transmission anyway floor it take your foot back off the gas or accelerator pedal and then mash it to the floor again but only come about halfway up and it will take off like a rocket. All other cars they not to mash the gas or pump the gas I should say but in this car it makes it go faster

Last week I brought my 2008 prius gen 2 with 141k miles (I bought it last year for 7500 usd from an old couple) to the Toyota dealer in The Netherlands. A big red triangle on the dash with the car and exclamation sign on the touchscreen came up. It said there was something wrong with the hybrid package. The dealer did some reading on the car, and they told me the dc converter did not convert well so the risk of getting a short circuit in the hybrid system is pretty high. They told that the dc converter cost without taxes about 3000 USD, with labour cost it will cost around 5000 to 6000 USD in total. However, they said that when you replace the dc converter it is still not problem free. Other problems that are connected to the dc converter or hybrid system might occur. Is this true? Or is this a protocol of the dealer to communicate such things? They offered me to sell the car to them for 2000 USD. Should I keep and fix it elsewhere or sell the car?

You might be better off finding another car it depends everything just depends on your situation. I haven’t had that happen to me yet with the inverter you might be able to find another car for around the same money with less miles. That’s a pretty costly repair. The other thing is you don’t know once you fix that if you’re going to have any other issues, but on the flipside, you don’t know if you buy another vehicle. If you will have other problems with that vehicle, it’s a crapshoot no matter how you look at it .

When I bought the car it had 176,000 miles it’s the most expensive used car that I ever bought and I only bought it because I commuted 50 miles to work one way each day.. i’ve owned my Prius for almost a year now and it’s hard to believe that but I absolutely love it. I’m a car guy and it’s almost like a blasphemous thing to say that you like the second generation Prius so many people don’t like the car but I think it’s because they didn’t know how to drive it it’s a really fun car to drive if you know how to drive it. One day I would love to go to a runway or a dragstrip or something like that and do a segment you thought your muscle car was fast and raise muscle cars against the Prius it would put up a better fight than you would think obviously it’s not gonna be the car that goes there to 60 and 5.5 seconds but there was muscle cars that were slower than that.. The other crazy thing is Honda Odyssey brand new Honda Odyssey beats just about every single muscle car from the 60s except for a few.. Anyway your original question 176,000 miles I paid 4500 bucks for it it had the battery replaced. It’s a very quirky car I’m not going to lie there’s some things that work some days and some days you have to wake other things up if that makes any sense sometimes you’ll turn it on and there won’t binnacle display so you have to put the key into the ignition to make the gauge appear. The one thing I found out about mine is it does not leak oil but once the maintenance light comes on it’s out of oil evidently these are notorious for burning oil it will burn a quart of oil every thousand miles it might even be worse than that but you can’t smell it burning oil it doesn’t create smoke or anything like that. Just something I found out worth sharing =) The car has 208,000 miles on it now and I use it to drive all over, it’s a great car I can’t recommend it enough.

I would say go and find one and try it on and see if you like it. The one I bought they replace the battery I would try to find one that has a replacement battery from what I was told it’s not that big of a deal to replace one and they’re not a fortune like a Tesla battery would be..
